• The major ethnic group in Rwanda and Burundi is Hutu (84-85%).

• The reason for conflict in Rwanda and Burundi is ethnic differences.

• The second ethnic group in both countries is Tutsi (14-15%).

• The two ethnic groups have been at war since the late 1950s.

• Early Europeans in the region viewed the Tutsi as a superior people.

• A Hutu uprising in 1959 left over 20,000 Tutsis dead.

• Rwanda and Burundi became independent nations in 1962.

• Hutus took control of the government.• In April, 1994, the President of Rwanda (a Hutu)

was killed.• The revenge of his death led to the murdering of

thousands of Tutsis.• Refugees fled into nearby countries.
