Dear Parishioners and Friends, Let me begin by expressing my deepest sympathyand the sympathy of all the Parish to JamesPalazza, Mr. Hospitality here at BlessedSacrament. James’ sister, Florence, his closestrelative, died suddenly this past week. The FuneralMass was celebrated on Friday here at BlessedSacrament, and as a parish we will celebrate amonth’s mind Mass on Friday November 30th at7:30 am. The horror of Pittsburg is so real, the sin of anti-semitism and a seeming indifference that wedemonstrate to verbal attacks leveled againstothers, whether it be by an elected official, otherpeople in authority, or just people on the street, children in school. Verbal bullying is wrong, and aswe have seen these past few days, when notimmediately corrected, seems to gives license toacts of physical violence. Tuesday of this week is Election Day. Let it not besaid that you did not cast a vote. Remember, weare the Church, the salt that can flavor differentlythe earth, the light that can cast out the darkness. Itis our responsibility to make room in the publicargument for the moral dimension. One of the waysthis is done is by exercising our right, our privilegeto vote. On Tuesday too, the Baptismal Conference forparents who wish to present a child for Baptism willbe held at 7:30pm in the Rectory. Parents arerequired to attend. Godparents, if they areavailable, are encouraged to attend. It is a pleasure to welcome back today FatherO’Shea, now that he has become the Provincial ofthe Passionists we won’t see him as much- sowhen we see him it is a real gift- welcome back. Inthe coming weeks we will be enriched by FatherVincent Biaggi, SJ and Father Thomas Fenlonleading us in prayer. Today is the day!- the Parish Appeal begins- I hopewe have all been praying. While we need $752,000to really make it, that is, cover our expected deficitand the essential capital repairs, our goal for thisappeal is $400,000. I’d ask everyone to please dowhat you can. I know it is asking a lot, but ourbeautiful Church, where I believe it becomes easierto raise our minds and hearts to God in prayer, is atreasure! Different moments in history presentdifferent challenges to those present in that time…one of ours, at this time in the Parish’s history, isensuring a long and future life for our buildings andinfrastructure. Our needs are great, I ask everyoneto do what you can……I am trusting that everyonewill do something. Thank you so much for yourunderstanding.

And of course, when you think everything is goingok… there comes a moment….on Tuesday night,a steam pipe broke… that is why sinceWednesday, we have had no heat in the Churchand school……the cement floor has been brokenopen, the pipe runs from the east to west sides ofthe building in the space between the church halland the school….,,the repairs continue as Iwrite….fortunately God has gifted us with warmweather……unfortunately, this major repair addsto our deficit….the amount to be announced Friday of this week is the Feast of the Dedicationof the Lateran Basilica, the Cathedral Church ofRome. Did you know that? The opening prayerstates that Lateran Basilica is “the Mother andHead of the Churches of Rome and the World. Itmight surprise you to know that it is also theplace where the Pope lived from the 4th Centuryuntil moving to Avignon in the year 1309, and 5Ecumenical Councils were held at the LateranBasilica. On Saturday, the 10th, we celebrate the Feast ofSt. Leo the Great, a Pope and Doctor of theChurch, who was an eminent preacher and pastorin the 4th Century. He fought against the heresiesof his day, Pelagianism and Manicheism. And hisposition on the two natures of Jesus, Divine andHuman, was adopted by the Council ofChalcedon in 451. I believe he is called the Great, because he defended Rome against the Hunsand Vandals. In some of my meandering reading, I found thislittle quote from Sister Joan Chittister in her bookWe Are All One: Reflections on Unity,Community, and Commitment to Each Other. Forme, it’s been helpful, what do you think? “Whenwe try to eradicate evil but fail, goodness winsnevertheless because trying keeps the hope ofgoodness alive.” And so we just keep on trying… As always, please pray for peace. Father Duffell

Padre Duffell.
