Dear Parents, Teachers, and Students, This is the last PTSA newsletter of the year, so while we still have a month and a half of school left prior to graduation on May 26th, there is still a very important part of our school year ahead of us. I would like to use this last PTSA newsletter to remind all of Troy’s stakeholders to “keep the pedal to the floor,” so to speak. In this last month of school we have our State mandated testing which begins this year on April 11th. Troy will be on block schedule for two weeks until April 22nd to complete this testing. I would like to remind everyone that with the large reduction in the amount of State testing since 2013, there is even more weight given to how Troy is serving our students based on essentially the results of our 11th graders tested results in English and math. Our 10th graders also take a science examination that contributes to school performance determination. An additional bonus of this testing is a state level determination as to where individual students are achieving in line with state educational standards. This is not unlike SAT, AP, or IB testing in which it is another means of assessing student achievement outside of subject matter letter grades. Our students are well prepared, and I look forward to the results of these assessments! All students, but especially seniors! Keep up with your classes! I know there may be a small desire to relax and give in to the temptation of “senioritis.” This regrettable affliction can infect more than seniors and does seem to have a contagious effect, especially on siblings and friends. The year is almost over! AP and IB exams are here in three weeks, semester grades are final at the end of May, and Summer School begins on May 31st! We are almost there! Our seniors are currently receiving their college acceptances, and returning classes are preparing for 2016-17 as they try out for Cheer, Dance, and hold ASB elections. Additionally, our incoming 9th grade class is currently having their classes assigned and preparing for next year. It is a busy and productive spring at Troy! Thank you to all Troy’s stakeholders for a fantastic 2015-16! Best,

William V. Mynster, Ph.D.

Did you know that statistically, graduation night is one of the most dangerous times in your students’ young life? Our young men and women are at a higher risk of injury or even death from driving accidents, as well as physical/sexual assaults, and drug incidents. Even if they are not

participating in dangerous behavior, they could simply be in the wrong place, with the wrong crowd, at the wrong time.

TROY TECH

It is another busy spring semester for the Counseling Department! We recently registered all current and incoming students. Counselors will be finishing up student-parent junior conferences in the coming weeks. Following this will be ongoing student meetings to check-in on grades, well-being, and any other challenges that arise. April we begin preparations for Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. This year we are expecting to proctor more than 3,000 AP Exams and that number will continue to increase into future school years. Before the school year ends, there is some information and details students and families will need.

SENIORS Congratulations to all of you! We are so proud of the accomplishments of the Class of 2016 and wish you great success as you embark upon your college careers or enter into the world of work or military service.

Senior Letters Seniors: If you received a letter from your Counselor in February or receive a letter in April or May, please be certain you have taken the appropriate steps to complete the coursework necessary to meet graduation requirements. If you are attending the District Apex Program at La Sierra or attending Credit Recovery Saturday School at Troy, you must attend regularly in order to complete your units. You are now on the “home stretch.” Watch your attendance carefully, because it is very difficult and often impossible to make up lost units late in the school year.

Senior Survey All seniors will need to complete the senior survey through their Naviance Family Connection account. We have added an additional statement on the senior survey stating that the seniors are aware that they must complete the senior survey before we will approve the release of the final transcript. After completing the senior survey, the students will be directed to log on to the www.parchment.com website to request the final transcript. Counselors will be visiting senior English classes during the month April to inform students of the survey and details on completing it.

Community Colleges For seniors planning to attend a community college, if you have not yet taken the Placement Exam, you can still call the specific campus and request a test date as well as an orientation and advisement time. Although time is short, community colleges do accept applications during the summer months. Remember that you are eligible to attend any of more than 110 community colleges in California.

JUNIORS Summer is an excellent time to visit college campuses with your family and finalize your list of colleges you will apply to in the fall. Remember that colleges evaluate your tenth and eleventh grade coursework for eligibility and often the first semester of your senior year. Please ensure that you have discussed your course selections for next year with your family and feel confident that you have chosen wisely. Also, remember that freshman grades are important; although freshman grades are not always calculated into the grade point average, colleges do examine and qualify your course selections and consider your level of success. If you plan to apply to an impacted campus, remember that additional criteria will be used in the selection process. Such factors

as honors, AP and International Baccalaureate courses, grade point average, test scores, community service, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, and additional advanced coursework beyond minimum requirements are also evaluated. All students who hope to play Division I or Division II college sports must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at www.eligibilitycenter.org. There is a link on the Counseling webpage. Juniors, you must also inform your counselor in person as soon as possible that you a prospective Division I or II college athlete.

SAT/ACT/SAT SUBJECT TESTS Current juniors (Class of 2017) will receive testing information and other pertinent senior information during their senior conference. These student-counselor conferences will take place in August and September. Counselors will also conduct large-group senior presentations during the Government and Economics classes. Please remember that the latest test date accepted by UC and CSU campuses is the December test sitting. We recommend that all current juniors planning to apply to four year colleges complete their testing no later than December of their senior year. For all other grade levels, college entrance exam information can be found on the Troy Counseling webpage.

SOPHOMORES

Counselors met in groups for sophomore conferences during the month of December. The counselors presented information regarding PSAT, SAT/ACT, college pre-requisites, college planning, and other information. To date, all sophomore students have received information on the Troy Counseling webpage resources, and during a two-day career unit and they were given detailed information on how to utilize their Naviance Family Connection account for information regarding careers, colleges, and scholarships. We are also hosting a “Sophomore Parent Presentation”. There are two sessions for sophomore families to choose from, April 11th from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. or April 11th from 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Both sessions will take place in the Lecture Hall.

FRESHMEN Summer is a great time to volunteer, keep up your academic skills, and prepare for sophomore year. If you are looking for places to volunteer, please visit the “Volunteer Opportunities” section of the Troy Counseling webpage. To stay on track for college, please review the “College Planning Calendar” on the Troy Counseling webpage.

2016-2017 COURSE REGISTRATION Thank you to all students and families for a successful 2016/17 registration. Counselors met with over 2200 current students and input course selections for the next year. Please keep in mind that based on second semester grades, students may be moved in or out of courses or course levels. Students who do not maintain at least a “B-” in each semester of an honors course will be dropped from the honors class for the following year. Please have your student talk to his/her counselor regarding any changes or concerns with the 2016/17 course requests.
