01 September 2015 - A Thank You from NUAC

Napier University Archery (NUAC) was formed in 2004 by Stewart Barclay and has been a constant competitive sports club within Napier. When first formed NUAC wasnothing but a few friends who loved Archery, wanting to have a way to both teach others and a way for them to compete. NUAC attended their first competition in January2005 (British University Indoor Championships) and within 6 weeks had won their first medals as a club. NUAC formally joined the Scottish Universities League in 2005/06and have been regulars at UK-wide Open as well as Student Competitions.

NUAC has faced many issues over the years ranging from constantly finding and changing venue, to the rapid membership turnover. NUAC has a very rapid turnover of

Page 4: SAA News & Articles 2015 - Scottish Archery · 2016. 5. 3. · Cookie information Home Scottish Archery Governance/Contacts Squads/Academy Events Records Leagues Links SAA Shop Members

members, with many students doing 1 or 2 year courses, post grads or studying from abroad. Archers from around 30 different countries have competed for NUAC. Howeverthis lack of long-term members meant there were very few who could help teach and pass on their experience to the club’s novices. Despite its many problems NUAC hasquite done well in terms of results:

NUAC's Best Results:BUCS Indoors - 10th in 2014BUTC - Round of 16 in 2014E-League - 8th Division 1 in 2015BUCS Outdoors - 7th in 2014SSS League - 2nd in 2006, 2008, 2012, 2014

Novice TeamsBUCS Indoors - 2nd in 2013E-League - 3rd Division 1 in 2013BUSC Outdoors - 3rd in 2013SSS League - winners in 2008, level on points with first in 2013plus 2nd in 2006, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015

However on the 23rd of April 2015 tragedy hit the club. They were victim to a horrendous arson attack. A handful of teenagers set alight to the club’s Equipment shed, containing over 7000 pounds worth of equipment. This was a hard blow to the club, with very little time available for them to rebuild before the new academic year. Thiswasn’t helped when they were recently notified by their Student Union that they would receive no insurance claim to cover the damages.

Now the club’s committee are pushing hard to reconstruct a club with over 10 years’ investment. They have received huge support from Archery societies from all overScotland and the whole of the UK. Scottish Archery has been one of the biggest supporters of NUAC, investing both money and equipment. NUAC still has many challengesahead of them but with continued support from both their University and Scottish Archery, NUAC's future is beginning to look a little brighter.

10 August 2015 - Summer Universiade Experience

The 2015 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXVIII Summer Universiade, was held in the city of Gwangju, South Korea. It took place from July 3 to July 14, 2015and three Edinburgh University students from Scotland - Hope Greenwood, Stephanie Clason and Phillip Tucknott - were part of the 10 strong archery team, with the GreatBritain delegation being made up of 100 athletes and support staff. Competition at the event was fierce as all the top archery nations had student archers attending. Hope ,Stephanie and Phill have written about their experience at the event

"The opportunity to participate in a multi-sport games such as the Summer Universiade was something that was equally new and exciting for all three of us. We therefore didnot know what to expect from our time in Gwangju, South Korea but we were very eager to find out! The immensity of the event struck us as soon as we stepped foot insidethe Athletes’ Village which quickly filled to capacity, accommodating 13000 other athletes and staff from 149 countries. The moment we walked into the Opening Ceremony ina stadium full of spectators, fireworks, light displays, and speakers blasting K-Pop was the point at which it became apparent that competing in the world’s second largestmulti-sport event, only behind the Olympics, would be something that none of us would ever forget.

The archery competition itself was held in a new custom-built facility for the Universiade. With the sun beating down, the stands of the Gwangju International Archery Centrefilled – a rare occurrence for us and a reminder of the enormity of the event – for the beginning of the ranking round. Qualification finished with Hope in 29th and Steph in36th in the Ladies Compound division and Pip in 46th in the Gents Compound division. The ladies’ rankings unfortunately meant that they would meet each other in the firstround of individual eliminations with Hope taking the match in a closely fought 141-140. Pip was unable to see off a highly-ranked Turkish archer which gave him anindividual finish of 33rd. Hope and Steph finished 17th and 33rd, respectively.

We also took part in team rounds, with Hope and Steph being joined by Georgie Brown, narrowly losing to Italy 222-224 in the first round, and Pip, Jordan Mitchell and MattDale losing to a strong team from the USA. Hope and Jordan then went on to play the Korean mixed team live on Korean television, eventually losing to the number 1 seedsbut with great support from the British contingent. We return to Scotland with fond memories of our time in Gwangju and a drive to push ourselves to take part in futureevents and build on our results this summer. We would like to thank Scottish Archery for helping us to participate in this amazing event!"

6 July 2015 - Scotland wins on Home Turf!

Scotland has won the Archery European Commonwealth Championships for the first time since records began!

Scotland pulled out all the stops to host the European Commonwealth Championships this weekend in Edinburgh. TheChampionships, commonly called the Euronations, invites teams from across the commonwealth counties in Europe including theHome Nations and Ireland to compete in a World Archery 1440 round. Competing countries take it in turns to host the competitionand this year it was Scotland’s turn. The competition was held at the Edinburgh University Playing Fields at Peffermill and includedcompound and recurve bow styles for men and women.

Archers shoot 144 arrows at distances for 90m, 70m, 50m and 30m for men and 70m, 60m, 50m and 30m for women. The maximumscore possible is 1440 as the center of the Gold is worth 10 points. Each country can enter four competitors for each category, and the top three scores are added together to form the team score.

The teams were;

England Recurve MenGerry Tuck, David Timmins, Michael Judd, Mark Smith

England Compound MenMatthew Tuck; Carl Richards

England Ladies CompoundPauline Burfitt, Teresa Bridges, Nicola Simpson, Linda Townsend

England Ladies RecurveCharlotte Birch, Lizzie Cantopher, Lisa Cooper, Jeanetta Braun

Scotland also beat England in the Compound Division with a score of 7864 to England’s 6715. However the recurve result was reversed with England beating Scotland7275 to 6868.

Northern Ireland won the men’s recurve division with 3722, followed by England and then Scotland.

Scotland won the men’s compound division, convincingly beating England who only fielded two competitors.

For the ladies England won both recurve and compound divisions with Scotland taking silver.

In a spectacular finish to the competition, two pipers in full highland dress marched onto the field to serenade the archers.

Presentations were made at a banquet during the evening, where the archers were treated to a delicious dinner and the chance to socialize with the other teams. Thepresentations were awarded by Derek Lovell MBE, President of Archery GB.

Although not part of the official Euronations competition, there was more drama on the Sunday as competitors competed individually head to head. There were some closematches with several single arrow shoot offs, with plenty of cheering and support from fellow competitors.

The winners were;

Ladies Recurve1st Charlotte Birch, England2nd Rebekah Tipping, Scotland3rd Lizzie Cantopher, England4th Lisa Cooper, England

Ladies Compound1st Rebecca Lennon, Northern Ireland2nd Victoria Barby, Scotland3rd Pauline Burfit, England4th Linda Townsend, England

Gents Recurve1st Conner Hall, Northern Ireland2nd Stuart Barby, Scotland3rd Matt Nowicki, Scotland4th Patrick Huston, Northern Ireland

Gents Compound1st Carl Richards, England2nd Matthew Hall, Northern Ireland3rd Matthew Tuck, England4th Martin Krusche, Scotland

The competition was a fantastic occasion for all involved, and highlighted how much interest there is for competitive archery, locally within Scotland and also within the HomeNations. Ireland are due to host the competition next year, and we really hope that they will be able to. We would love to see archery return to the commonwealth games, andhopefully by holding events such as the Euronations we can persuade future host nations to consider archery as a core event.

A big thanks to Scottish Archery for hosting the event, all the competitors and team mangers for the fantastic team spirit demonstrated over the two days and also to thesponsors, Clickers Archery, Edinburgh University, CSE, MRM Archery, Modova Archery, PSL Team Sports, Kudos Sports, Penicuik Archers and Sportscotland.

11 Apr 2015 - 40 Year old Ayrshire Archery League S till Going Strong

The 22nd of March saw close on 80 archers taking part the final leg of the Ayrshire League for the Winter Season 2014/15. The event was hosted by Largs Archery Club atthe National Sport Centre in Inverclyde. Participating Clubs where: Ayr, ASKA, Clyde, Inverclyde, Irvine Tox and Largs.

The President of The Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers(ASKA) Stuart Wilson remembers the history. The league started as a series of indoor competitions in the winter of 1975-76 but at that stage it was not as structured as it later came to be. In the previous winter season,1974-75 ASKA held a number of indoor competitions - four I think - at Ardrossan Academy, which was where we shot then, Kilwinning Academy having yet to be built, and weinvited clubs in Ayrshire only. The round shot was a Portsmouth because that was what we practised at and we already had the 60cm faces for it. It was also a nice simpleround with no requirement to mark targets and the 20yard distance fitted well into the sports hall.

The primary function at that time was to continue to get shooting going over the winter and to keep the interest alive. The clubs participating, again from memory, were Ayr,Irvine, Kilmarnock and Dreghorn as well as ASKA. I remember this quite well because it was myself and Bill Petrie that organised them. The following winter 1975-76 we didthe same thing but this time Ayr held one of them as did Irvine I think, but the only evidence that I personally have are two medals that I won, a 3rd at an ASKA one and a 1stfor the Ayr one both dated 1975. Both of these simply say indoor shoot, I may well have others but not many were being engraved as the costs were being deliberately keptlow - again from memory, the entry fee was only £1.00.

Following on from this the other clubs began to host an event each and Largs had also joined in by then primarily because a number of us at Kilwinning, myself included, were also members of Largs and we pushed them along. Shortly after this we all got together as clubs to create the format that is still in use today, i.e Teams taken from thebest four archers in each club, male or female. This was no accident as it was modelled on the existing system used for the Home Internationals that is we sent six and thebest four were the team, though there were both male and female teams in that. I was involved with the Scottish team myself at this stage so was familiar with the conceptand pushed for this format as I could see that it was a pretty good one allowing as it did for new archers to compete without any pressure.

Right from the beginning we treated it as a friendly shoot designed to promote archery in Ayrshire, we didn’t think much bigger than that in those days, but gradually it grewsomewhat as time went on and Inverclyde (Greenock) joined hosting a shoot at James Watt college.

Some time after the league, as we called it by then, had been running a colleague of mine at work, Ross Strachan, who by then been recruited into archery by me,manufactured the brass trophy in the form of a target boss specifically for the league. From memory Ayr were the first to get their names on it but the league had been goingfor a number of years prior to that with no awards other than medals. I can’t remember exactly when the trophy was presented now but that date will be on it.

The most important legacy is the volunteercoaches who have enabled sport to flourish on the Islands. Well done to allthe successful Coaches who have proved they can develop performancearchery technique for all.”

Peter Lennon, the Director of Coaching for Scottish Archery was also inShetland for the Assessments, and added “Coaches are key to thedevelopment of our sport. It is always a privilege to work with talentedpeople like those I met in Lerwick who give up their time to gain this

Having a pool of qualified and dedicated coaches to develop archery in Shetland is going to give us the opportunity to run beginners coursesmore regularly and give those attending the best possible start in the sport. We should also be able to accommodate more community and corporate come and try sessions.Running a course like this would not have been possible without the help of many people and organisations and we would especially like to thank Maurice Haining for hisenthusiasm and help at the start of the process of getting the course in Shetland, and Michael Mather (Chairman of Scottish Archery) for supporting us from the start andliaising with Archery GB on our behalf.”

The students headed off to the British University Team Championships hosted by East Anglia on 21-22 February

There are 32 mixed teams of three archers. Universities can enter up to two teams, an 'A' team, and if there are spaces still available all 'B' teams are then drawn from a hatto see which ones will also get a space.

All the archers shoot a Bray I round, and then the scores are combined to rank the various teams who then have a head to had on Beiter Hit/Miss targets - described aspossibly the loudest and most enjoyable shoot on the circuit!! The format is very simple. Four ends of six arrows, each end lasting two minutes, each archer shoots twoarrows, the winning team is the one that scores the most "hits". - in the case of ties, well, shoot-off time! Each archer shoots one arrow and the team only has one minute.

11 Jan 2015 - Sad News

It is with regret that the Board has to advise members of the death of David McPherson of Monklands Archers. David was a long time member having started archery in theearly 1970s and continuing until illness made him stop shooting in the late 1990s. David was a great coach and an advocate of Scottish Archery although illness restrictedthis in latter years. Our deepest sympathy goes to Margaret, his wife, a longtime member of Monklands Archers and Leslie, his son, of Quicks Archery.
