Becoming a Catholic or Adult Confirmation Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Were you never Confirmed and now find that you would like to complete your Sacraments of Initiation? Are you interested in finding out more about the Catholic faith? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, then Faith Formation is for you! Call the Parish Center for more information.

Baptism Baptisms are celebrated on various Sundays throughout the year at 1:15 p.m. You are encouraged to register for the baptism BEFORE YOUR CHILD IS BORN, so that it is easier to attend the required Baptism Preparation Class. Please call the Center and we will be happy to set up an appointment. Many parents also use this opportunity to register in the Parish as a new parishioner. Information about Godparents is available on the website.

Marriage We are happy to arrange for your wedding. First, we have the marriage interview and then we can set the date for the wedding. More information is available on the website. Please call the Center for an appointment and we will be happy to help you!

Reconciliation Confessions will be heard by appointment only. Please email Fr. Irinel: [email protected]

Anointing of the Sick We encourage all those eligible for this Sacrament to be anointed after the Noon Mass on the first Sunday of the month or by calling the Center. Those eligible are those who are about to undergo an operation; are suffering from serious illness and the condition has worsened; or are enduring the weakening effects of advancing age and it has been one year since they were last anointed.

Mass Cards Mass cards are always available when the Parish Center is open. If you are unable to come to the Center during our normal hours, you are invited to call (631.271.4455) and request a Mass card over the telephone or email [email protected]. Credit cards are accepted in payment of the offering. If you are at the Center during Religious Education hours, feel free to leave your contact information and someone will be in touch with you the next day to fulfill your request!

Everyday Stewardship Recognize God in Your

Ordinary Moments Be Sure to Look the Part

I used to coach my oldest son in soccer when he was younger. As he got older, he would go to tryouts for select and high school teams. I was no longer the coach, but I always shared wit him one piece of advice before any tryout: Be sure to look the part. I told him that if he showed up looking like a soccer player, there was an increased chance of him being seen as a soccer player. If he showed up looking like a kid that plays soccer in video games as opposed to the real thing, he might not be taken seriously. As he grew older, that same advice was then applied to getting a job. It’s advice I have heeded myself all my life. You can even say it is like another common phrase: “Fake it till you make it.” As disciples of Jesus Christ, we certainly do not want to fake it, but we do need to look the part. The world looks at those of us who proclaim to be Christians to see if there is anything to this way of life. If they see us looking and acting like people transformed by Jesus Christ, they will be more likely to take Christianity seriously. If they look at us and see nothing different, then they can easily conclude that there is nothing different about Jesus Christ. He just becomes simply another religious figure of history. Can the world see the power of Christ in you? How well do you look the part? - Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Confirmation by Paul Turner

The ways of celebrating Confirmation vary as much as the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Some people celebrate Confirmation in their adolescence after many months of catechesis and service. Some are confirmed when they are baptized. Members of other churches may be confirmed when they are received into the full communion of the Catholic church.

This flexibility causes confusion. The many occasions for confirmation obscure its meaning. Surely confirmation seals a candidate with the gift of the Holy Spirit. But the disparity of age, preparation, and celebration of this sacrament remains widespread.

In the early church, all the baptisms happened at the cathedral on Easter. After baptism, the bishop anointed with chrism, imposed his hands and prayed for the Holy Spirit. When Christianity spread to rural communities, bishops could no longer gather all those to be baptized. Consequently, by the fifth century, they permitted the presbyters and deacons of the smaller communities to baptize. But the bishops “confirmed” the baptisms in the community.

At the same time, our church was welcoming back into the fold those who had strayed to heresies. To ritualize their return, we borrowed two gestures from the baptismal rite: the imposition of hands and the anointing with chrism. From these beginnings, confirmation has come down to us as three families of rituals: 1) Initiation. The Eastern rites confirm (or chrismate) everyone as soon as they are baptized—even infants. In the West, we confirm at the baptism of adults and children of catechetical age. 2) Maturity. We delay confirmation for Catholics baptized as infants. The age of the typical candidate may range anywhere from about seven to about sixteen. Dioceses in the United States may set their age within that range. That’s why children in your diocese may be confirmed at one age and children in the next diocese are confirmed at another. 3) Transference. When baptized candidates transfer from another church into the Catholic Church, we confirm them after they make their profession of faith.

Although the meaning of confirmation changes slightly within each family, its overall purpose celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit in the baptized, which helps us to bear faithful witness to Christ.

ARE YOU 18+ AND INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC?

WERE YOU BAPTIZED CATHOLIC BUT NOW WANT TO CELEBRATE

FIRST COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a ministry for those interested in becoming Catholic and for those who want to receive First Communion and Confirmation.

ADULT CONFIRMATION: If you are 18 or older, and have celebrated BOTH Baptism and your First Communion in a Roman Catholic Church, then this is for you! Life happens and sometimes being

Confirmed in your high school years doesn’t work out. Well now it’s time!

Candidates attend Mass, in person, here either on Saturday evenings at 5:00 p.m. or Sunday mornings at either 9:00 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. every Sunday. Due to Covid, until January 2021, candidates meet on a weekday evening, using computer-based video conferencing, to learn about the Catholic faith with a team of parishioners. The day or time isn’t set as we are speaking to those who will participate. If you are interested in prayerfully discovering God’s calling in your life, meeting members of St. Elizabeth’s parish, then call our Faith Formation Office at 631-271-4455 Ext. 308 to speak to John Fruner, our DRE, about the process. You can also email him at [email protected].

A heartfelt thank you to all the parishioners who support Jeanne Victor in helping to clean and keep safe our worship space in Church!

It is amazing what is being done quietly, prayerfully and consistently after each liturgy!

Thank you, all, and Jeanne, for your great leadership and selfless work!

Live the Liturgy Inspiration for the Week

Think for a moment about the most special person in your life. Why do you love them? Many people will answer that question noting character traits they admire about the person, pointing to an indescribable compatibility that exists and describing a deep sense of connection and intimacy or even a sense of rightness about the relationship. In relationships that are authentic and true, rarely are the personal benefits gained from the relationship noted as motivating factors for its pursuit. If we truly love someone, we do so simply because it is right and good to do so and not for some other self-serving reason. Why do you love God? The sense of happiness and the gift of mercy that come from that relationship are God’s to give, regardless of when in life we come to Him. God’s ways are different than ours.

REGISTRATION FOR CLASSESClasses for kindergarten to eighth grade Faith Formation will begin in October 2020. With the safety of our children, volunteer catechists, and parish community in mind, all Faith Formation classes will not be taking place here in the Parish Center. All classes will be conducted online and require parental assistance for October, November, December, and January 2021.

In January 2021, we will reevaluate the COVID risks to determine if Faith Formation classes can be held in the Parish Center. However, all students need to be registered. An online Learning Management System will be used along with the Our Sunday Visitor Alive In Christ series. Our parish’s program partners with parents in passing on the Catholic faith and preparing their children for First Reconciliation (Confession), First Communion, and Confirmation.

Parent meetings will be offered in the church and through online virtual meeting platforms, giving parents choices to better accommodate complicated family schedules with the unknowns of Covid-19. The Family Program’s parent classes requirement will be on hold this academic year (2020-2021) as we determine how and if we can continue with the challenges of Covid-19. A calendar of classes (if we are able to offer classes in the Parish Center) and detailed information is posted on our parish website (www.stelizabeth.org) under the “Faith Formation” tab.

When registering, either choose Parish Center based classes or Home Study. If you choose Home Study classes, you remain in Home Study classes for this entire academic year. Families that choose Parish Center based classes may have to remain at home, working online if, in January 2021, we determine we cannot offer in-person classes.

Given the status of the current pandemic, despite our best efforts to mitigate exposure to the virus in the church and church facilities, attending Mass and other Church functions may pose a risk of contracting the coronavirus. The church does not have the ability to supervise every visitor’s actions throughout the day and cannot guarantee with certainty that an individual will not contract the coronavirus. Please make your decision to attend Mass, or any other church function prayerfully and thoughtfully, being cognizant of all the risks. Proper face masks are to be worn at all times on church property (bandannas and scarves are not acceptable). Social distancing must be observed at all times (at least six feet apart). For your own well-being and that of other parishioners and guests, if you do not feel well, please stay home. If you feel someone on church property is not adhering to our poli-cies, please report it to us immediately.

Sunday, September 20, 2020 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Let us turn to God, who is generous in mercy and forgiveness, presenting the needs of the world before Him. --------------------------- For all who have sought and found the Lord in His holy Church and for those who are in the process of inding their way, let us pray to the Lord. For political and national leaders and for all who assist them in exercising their authority, may God open their hearts to His guidance, let us pray to the Lord. For all who are unemployed or underemployed and for those who seek to help them, may the Lord provide for them, let us pray to the Lord. For our Con irmation candidates, may they be strengthened through the prayers and encouragement of our parish community, let us pray to the Lord. For all who cannot be physically present with us today in this sacred assembly, may the Lord’s peace come upon them in a spiritual Communion, let us pray to the Lord. For those who are sick, especially Lawrence Famighetti, Ellen McAuley and Lawrence Pagliardo and those suffering from the corona virus, may they be strengthened by God’s help and aided by their friends, let us pray to the Lord. For all who have died, may they experience the eternal joy of the heavenly Kingdom, remembering James Byrne, Janice and Edmund Hanlon, Joseph Levantino, Frances Nolan and the victims of the corona virus, let us pray to the Lord For the prayers we hold deep in our hearts, let us pray to the Lord. --------------------------- God of abundance and generosity, we ask that you hear our prayers and grant them according to your Holy will. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. AMEN

Scripture Insights Lord, Hear our Prayers for

Sunday, September 20

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“I long to depart this life and be with Christ,” says

Paul in the Second Reading. What do these words

say to us about the depth, the faith, the prayer of

the man who uttered them? Paul is not speaking out

of depression, even though he is imprisoned at the

time he writes this (Philippians 1;:7, 17). His words

come from a deep desire within his heart and a

strong conviction of faith. “For to me, life is Christ

and death is gain,”

As a Pharisee (Philippians 3:5), Paul would have

believed in the resurrection of the dead even prior to

his conversion to Christ (Acts 23:6). It is not just

resurrected life that Paul longs for, it is to be with

Christ in the fullness of His glory. Not only had the

risen Christ appeared to him at his conversion, but

Paul had even glimpsed the glory of paradise in some

type of mystical prayer experience, as described in

2 Corinthians 12:1-4.

Paul’s personal experience of Christ rooted him firmly

in Christ. “I consider everything as a loss because

of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my

Lord” (Philippians 3:8). One could even say that

Paul lived and breathed Christ: “I live, no longer I,

but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).

What a model for us to ponder! How does one attain

such Christ-centeredness? To be sure, Paul’s

personal experience of Jesus was gift and grace;

but it is also true that we can open ourselves to

grace in various ways--by being faithful to prayer,

reading scripture, fasting, meditating the sacred

and other acts of devotion which help to cultivate a

personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. Certainly,

Paul was a man of prayer and devotion. Let us

cultivate such practices so that we, too, may be

open to the graces, the nearness of Christ.

Living Stewardship: Pillar of Prayer “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call Him while He is near.” This week, spend some time in silence in front of the Lord in the Tabernacle or ask the Lord to speak to you while you read from your Bible. Seek Him out this week and listen to what He has to say.

Stewardship…..Treasure Donations for the month of August 2020 as compared to August 2019:

Many parishioners have included catch-up donations in August 2020 from when they were not able to attend weekend Mass early in the pandemic. We believe these catch-up donations are the reason our August 2020 donations have exceeded those of August 2019.

As always, thank you for your support of our parish! Fr. Irinel.
