An opportunity has arisen for a Salaried Dental Officer to join an ongoing developing
Salaried Dental Service providing dental treatment for all patients needs The successful
applicant would be joining an established team of Dentists and Dental Care Professionals
in delivering General Dental Services under NHS terms and conditions to the whole
population of Orkney but especially addressing unmet need and reducing inequalities in
access to care
We are looking for clinicians who make patient care their first priority and who thrive
working with a number of different patient groups Applicants are expected to have a high
level of skill and the ability to provide treatments that elsewhere may be the province of
hospital services This requires a reflective and self-critical approach
Applicants require full GDC registration and must be eligible to hold a Board Dental List
Number have excellent communication skills and the drive to provide an outstanding
service

1 JOB PURPOSE
To assume an active role in the Public Dental Services in Orkney including provision of dental treatment within the terms of General Dental Service (GDS) regulations and to assist the Public Dental Service in meeting targets relating to current priorities
The post holder will be expected to work in any location within the area as directed
2 DIMENSIONS
The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team offering general and emergency dental care to our registered patients
Additionally there will be a requirement to provide emergency treatment to unregistered patients
The postholder will be expected to take part in the Emergency Dental Service rota for Orkney

3 ORGANISATION CHART
4 ROLE OF THE DEPARTMENT
The post holder will become an employee of NHS Orkney as part of the Public Dental Service (PDS)
The PDS delivers dental care to the population of Orkney Our clinics at Garson in Stromness and The Balfour in Kirkwall prioritise care for those that either have no dentist or a degree of increased need (perhaps those with dental anxiety complex medical histories or treatment requiring some specialist knowledge) The service is delivered by NHS Orkney and in cases of particular complexity via a service level agreement with NHS Grampian
5 KEY RESULT AREAS
Scottish Public Dental Service Terms and Conditions of Service April 2013 Annex C Section 1 Competencies for Dental Officers describe the full range of duties and responsibilities These may include any or all of the following with appropriate training
Participation in inspection and screening programmes
Provision of comprehensive oral health care to patients
Provision of dental care is with limited exception within the terms of the General Dental Service Regulations
Participation in emergency and out of hours services There will be a requirement to work on weekends and public holidays as part of a rota providing emergency cover

Introduction to Orkney and NHS Orkney
Lying off the northern coast of Scotland between John OrsquoGroats and the Shetland Isles Orkney is
an archipelago of over 70 beautiful islands 17 of which are inhabited The total population is
approximately 22000 with most people living on the Orkney Mainland Kirkwall the capital with its
spectacular red sandstone 12th-century cathedral and a population of 7500 is the administrative
centre of Orkney with a good mixture of shops supermarkets and businesses
Orkney is a wonderful place to live and offers excellent schools and leisure facilities low pollution

Our selection process will consist of the following assessments
bull Application short listing ndash application forms are reviewed and those meeting the role requirements will be invited to a competency-based interview
bull InterviewAssessment ndash competency-based interviews have a focus on NHS Orkneyrsquos core values and the candidatersquos technical expertise The interview may also include a role specific test or a presentation topic
