INTRODUCTION Of all three years of the lectionary cycle, this year’s All Saints readings have the most tears. Isaiah and Revelation look forward to the day when God will wipe away all tears; in John’s gospel, Jesus weeps along with Mary and all the gathered mourners before he demonstrates his power over death. On All Saints Day we celebrate the victory won for all the faithful dead, but we grieve for our beloved dead as well, knowing that God honors our tears. We bring our grief to the table and find there a foretaste of Isaiah’s feast to come. PrayerP: O God, your days are without end and your mercies cannot be counted. Make us

aware of the shortness and uncertainty of human life, and let your Holy Spiritlead us in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life, so that, when weshall have served you in our generation, we may be gathered to our ancestors, having the testimony of a good conscience, in the communion of your Church, inthe confidence of a certain faith, in the comfort of a holy hope, in favor with you,our God, and in peace with all humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 25:6-9 Page 723 in Bible

Response: Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 24 (read responsively)1The earth is the LORD‘s and all that is in it, the world and those who dwell

therein.2For the LORD has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the

rivers.3Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD, and who may stand in

God’s holy place?4Those of innocent hands and purity of heart,

who do not swear on God’s being, nor do they pledge by what is false.5They shall receive blessing from the LORD

and righteousness from the God of their salvation.6Such is the generation of those who seek you, O LORD,

of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.7Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors,

that the King of glory may come in.8Who is this King of glory?

The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle!9Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors,

that the King of glory may come in.10Who is this King of glory? Truly, the LORD of hosts is the King of glory.

Salem’s Angel Tree –

A Little History

The Angel Tree was started in 2000 by theMiriam Circle members. A longtime circlemember had passed away and the Angel Treewas dedicated to her memory. People wereable to purchase angels and the narthex treewas decorated with these angels each year. Thenames of all dedications were also recorded in aspecial book on display near the tree. Throughthe years over 500 angels have been dedicated.

There is no charge to dedicate an angel. Youcan pick up an angel in the church office andhang it on the tree yourself anytime you wish. Abook will be on the table where you can writethe name of your loved one and note who isdedicating the angel.

If you have purchased an angel in the past youcan also pick up an angel and either hang it onthe Angel Memory Tree or take it home to enjoyon your own tree.

All previously dedicated angels are recorded inthe memory book. To keep the Angel Treetradition going help is needed to set up anddecorate the tree.

This usually takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 28th this year) when the rest of thechurch is decorated for Christmas. All help would be greatly appreciated!
