Dear Reader,

At the outset, I feel privileged to write a column for

Shalby Times. Associated with Shalby Hospitals for

about 8 years, I am fortunate to be a part of Shalby’s

growth story. Established in 1994 by Dr. Vikram I. Shah as

a start-up Knee Replacement Centre, Shalby has grown

leaps and bounds to be known as a Multispecialty

Hospital chain today, world-wide. Looking back at the

bygone years and the incredible milestones Shalby has

established throughout its transition, I take immense

pride about my association with the group.

Shalby’s growth story owes it all to the inimitable

approach of delegation and innovative skills of our

Chairman, Dr. Vikram Shah. Rarely, in the history one can

find a medical doctor like him who has achieved so much

in so many areas in a short span of time, not only for his

own profession but for the community in a broader

Shalby Hospitals has recently conducted a General

Health Camp at the Texperts India  Pvt. Ltd.. Ahmedabad

for its employees.Understanding the importance of education in

thspreading awareness, Shalby Hospitals on 26 January,

2016, conducted a Cancer Awareness Program for the

female faculty and staff of COSMOS School, Ahmedabad.

In all 55 members participated in the program. Dr. Mitali

employees of Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Ltd.(GHCL) at

Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Shalby

Hospitals, Indore has jointly organized a scientific

session on the “Recent Advancements in Healthcare”

in Indore on 5th February, 2016. The program, hosted

by Shalby Hospitals was participated by over 500

doctors of Indore city and nearby vicinity. CME

(Continued Medical Education) serve the purpose of

learning to doctors on the new approaches of

treatment in healthcare and improved quality of care

to patients. The program had presentations on the Knee & Hip

�રકન���શન કરવામાં આવે છે.

મેન��સ ફાટી �ય �યારે આ���કોપીનું શું કામ ?

મેન��સ એ ઘૂંટણની અંદર અધ�ચં�માં જેવી ગાદી હોય છે જે ઘૂંટણને ચાલવામાં

મદદ કરે છે. જયારે મેન��સ ફાટી �ય �યારે �યિ�તને ચાલવામાં તકલીફ થાય છે.

દૂરબીનથી એ ફાટેલા ભાગને કાઢી તે ભાગમાં થતી તકલીફ દુર કરી શકાય છે.

ઘૂંટણના ઘસારામાં આ���કોપી નું શું કામ ?

શ�આતના ઘસારામાં દૂરબીનથી સફાઈ કરી દુખાવો ઓછો કરી શકાય છે અને

આસપાસની કા�ટલેજને ભરવામાં મદદ મળે છે. આ રીતે ઘૂંટણના દુખાવામાં

તેમજ ઘૂંટણ સંબંિધત અ�ય રોગોમાં પણ આ���કોપી ‹FZF સફળતાપૂવ�ક

Epilepsy, A Treatable Neurological Brain Disorder

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which nerve cell

activity in the brain becomes disrupted, causing

seizures. Seizure symptoms can vary widely. Seizures

require treatment as they can cause injuries and even

death. Treatment can control seizures in about 80

percent of people with epilepsy.

Symptoms: As epilepsy is caused by abnormal activity in

brain cells, seizures can affect any process that your

brain coordinates. Seizure signs and symptoms may

include:

l Temporary confusionl A staring spelll Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legsl Loss of consciousness or awarenessl Psychic symptomsl Sudden falls or dropping of objectsl Abnormal behaviorl Memory loss

In most cases, a person with epilepsy will tend to have

the same type of seizure each time, so the symptoms will

be similar from episode to episode.

Seek immediate medical help if :

l The seizure lasts more than five minutesl Breathing or consciousness doesn't return after the seizure stopsl A second seizure follows immediatelyl You have a high feverl You're experiencing heat exhaustionl You're pregnantl You have diabetesl You've injured yourself during the seizurel If you experience a seizure for the first time

Causes: Genetic influence:- Some types of epilepsy,

which are categorized by the type of seizure you

experience or the part of the brain that is affected, run in

families.

In these cases, it's likely that there's a genetic influence

involving:

l Head trauma-as a result of a car accident or other traumatic injury l Brain conditions- such as brain tumors or strokes Infectious diseases-such as meningitis, AIDS and viral encephalitisl Prenatal injury-such as an infection in the mother, poor nutrition or oxygen deficiencies.l Developmental disorders-such as autism and neurofibromatosis

To achieve the best seizure control possible with

medication, follow these steps:

l Take medications exactly as prescribedl Always call your doctor before switching to a generic version of your medication or taking other prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs or herbal remediesl Never stop taking your medication without talking to your doctorl Notify your doctor immediately if you notice new or increased feelings of depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual changes in your mood or behaviours

At least half of all people newly diagnosed with epilepsy

will become seizure-free with their first medication. If

anti-epileptic medications don't provide satisfactory

results, your doctor may suggest surgery or other

therapies. You'll have regular follow-up appointments

with your doctor to evaluate your condition and

medications.

ગાયન કોડ� નું મૂ�યાંકન કરી શકાય છે. કેટલાક દદ�ઓ માં, ��કો�કોપી

(ફાઈબરઓિ�ટક એ�ડો�કોપી) એને�થેિશયા વગર કરી શકાય છે, પરંતુ મોટા

ભાગના �ક�સાઓમાં, સભાન ઘેનની દવા ("સંિધકાળ �ઘ") ઉપયોગ કરવામાં

આવે છે.

��કો�કોપી માટે સંકેતો શું છે?

આ પ�રિ�થિતમાં સામા�ય રીતે િનદાન બનાવવા માટે વપરાય છે:l સતત અને સમ�વી ન શકાય તેવી ઉધરસ (૨ કરતાં વધુ મિહના)l ગળફામાં ર�તl અસામા�ય છાતીનો એ�સ-રે, જેમ કે ફેફસાંમાં એક માસ, નો�યુલ, અથવા

ગાંઠl ફેફસાના ચેપl �વાસમાં ઝેરી ગેસ અથવા રાસાયિણક

��કો�કોપી સારવાર માટે વપરાય છે :

l વાયુપથમાં બા� ત�વો દૂર કરવા (વ�ટી, �સગડાના, સોપારી)l એરવેઝ થી �વાહી અથવા લાળ �લગ દૂર કરવાl માસ અથવા તો ગાંઠ ‹FZF પતન થયું ઍર ખોલવા માટે એક કયા� મુજબ એક નાના �યુબ મૂકવા માટે

l અવરોિધત અથવા સંકુિચત �વાસનળી પહોળું કરવા માટે (ડાયલેશન)l રોગિનવારક �વાહીથી �વાસનળી ધોવું (થેરા�યુ�ટક લવેજ)l તમારા એરવેઝ થી લાળ �લગ દૂર કરવા માટે

ને�યાસી વષ� ની �મરે સાંધાનું ��યારોપણ

“મારી બહેન પથારીવશ હતા. �યારે મને તેમની સેવા કરવામાં તકલીફ પડતી

હતી. મને ઘૂંટણમાં દુ:ખાવો થતો હતો �યારે મારી બહેને મને ઘૂંટણની સજ�રી

કરવવા માટે ક�ું.

�ીમતી નીલમબેન વડોદ�રયા ૮૯ વષ� ની �મરના છે, અને તેઓ છે�લા

કેટલાય વષ�થી બંને પગના ઘૂંટણના વારંવાર દુ:ખાવાથી સતત પીડાતા હતા.

નીલમબેન ‹FZF ડો. િવ�મ શાહની સલાહ લેવામાં આવી, ડો. શાહે તેમને

પહેલા જમણા પગના ઘુંટણનું ��યારોપણ કરવાની �યારબાદ ડાબા પગના

ઘુંટણના ��યારોપણની સલાહ આપી. ડો. શાહની સલાહને અનુસરતા

�ીમતી વડોદ�રયા ગત વષ�ના જુલાઈ મિહનામાં દાખલ થઇ અને જમણા

પગના ઘુંટણના સાંધાનું ��યારોપણ કરા�યું જે ૮૯ વષ�ની ઉમરે કઠીન

ગણાય છે. �યારબાદ આ વષ�ની ૨૦મી ��યુઆરીએ તેઓએ ડાબા પગના

ઘુંટણના સાંધાનું ��યારોપણ કરા�યું

�ીમતી વડોદ�રયાએ જણા�યું કે મને બંને પગમાં તકલીફ હતી પરંતુ ડો.

િવ�મ શાહની સલાહ અનુસાર અને મારી તકલીફ જોતા અમે પહેલા

જમણા પગના સાંધાનું ��યારોપણ કરા�યું કારણકે તે સાંધાની વધારે તકલીફ

હતી. હવે બંને પગના ઘુંટણના ��યારોપણ કરા�યા બાદ મારા શરીરનું વજન

સમતુલીત કરી અને ૮૯ વષ�ની ઉમરે પણ હું મારી �તે �વતં�તાપૂવ�ક સારી

રીતે ચાલી શકું છંુ.

�ીમતી નીલમબેનના પુ� અમરીશભાઈ અને પુ�ી ડો. �ગૃિત ઢોલ�રયાએ

જણા�યું કે એક પ�રવાર પોતાના ઘરના મોભીને �યારેય પથારીવશ જોવા

માંગતો નથી અને તેથી જ અમે અમારી માતુ�ીના �મરવશ �ચતાતુર હતા.

ડો. િવ�મ શાહે અમને જ�રી િવ�વાસ અપા�યો અને ક�ું સજ�રીની જ�રી

છે અને ભિવ�યમાં પડી �ય અને તા�કાિલકમાં સજ�રી કરાવી પડે એના કરતા

અ�યારે સંપૂણ� યોજનાપૂવ�ક સજ�રી કરી લેવી િહતાવત છે અને ડો. શાહની

સલાહ �માણે અમે યોજનાબ�ધ રીતે બંને પગની સજ�રી કરાવી અને

નીલમબેન અ�યારે પોતાની રીતે ૮૯ વષ�ની ઉમરે પણ ચાલી શકે છે એ

પ�રવાર માટે આનંદની વાત છે. શે�બી ખાતે દદ� અને ડો�ટરના પ�રપ�વ

સંબંધો વખાણવાલાયક છે. સાંધાની ��યારોપણ સજ�રીના િન�ણાંત ડો.

િવ�મ શાહ અને ડો. જયેશ પાટીલ તેમજ ડો. મહે�� બી રાજગોર (સીનીયર

અને�થેટી�ટ)ના અમે ખુબ આભારી છીએ જેમણે અમને આ નાજુક

સમયમાં સંપૂણ� સાથ સહકાર અને હુંફ પૂરી પાડી. વધુમાં ડો. �ગૃિતએ

જણા�યું કે ડો. િવ�મ શાહ અને તેમની ટીમે ફરીથી એકવાર પુરવાર કયુ� કે ગમે

તેટલી મોટી ઉમંરે પણ સાંધાના ��યારોપણની સજ�રી શ�ય છે.

તે �દવસોમાં િવજય શે�બીમાં િશિબર ચાલતી હતો. �યાં મ� ડો.આિશષ શેઠને

બતા�યું, તેઓએ મારા એ�સ-રે લીધા અને જણા�યું કે ઓપરેશન કરાવવું

અિનવાય� છે. પહેલા એક પગે ઓપેરેશન કરા�યું જેમાં થોડોક જ સમય લા�યો

અને દુ:ખાવો પણ ઝાઝો ના થયો. �યારબાદ મ� બી� પગનું ઓપેરશન કરા�યું

આ માટે હું એકલી જ �તે જ એકટીવા ચલાવી અને હોિ�પટલમાં દાખલ થવા

ગઈ હતી. બીજંુ ઓપેરેશન પણ સારી રીતે સફળ ર�ું અને મને �યાર�ય દુ:ખાવો

થયો નહી. બી� ઓપેરેશનના એક જ મિહનામાં હું ફરીથી �કુટર ચલાવતી થઇ

ગઈ. મારી તકલીફના િનવારણ અને ખુબ જ સારા રીઝ�ટ માટે ડો.આિશષ

શેઠની આભારી છુ.”

શે�બીને ખુબ ખુબ આભાર

I Am Longing to Walk Again Without Pain

Mrs. Clemence Natongo Owor from Uganda is 73 years

old. She had been a victim of Right Knee Pain due to

Osteoarthritis for fourteen long years. She has been

consulting Orthopedic doctors in Kenya and was put on

pain killers and balms for long and ultimately

recommended for TKR. However, she was reluctant for

undergoing surgery due to fear factor as some of the

patients who had undergone TKR at various hospitals,

elsewhere, were not reporting their experiences,

positively. One of the Physicians she consulted in

Uganda had even suggested her not to opt for TKR

Surgery as it will be too long a process and the risks

would be many.

Her daughter Annes had a friend who had been to

Shalby, Ahmedabad for a surgery. She suggested Shalby

as a good hospital for Mrs. Clemence’s TKR (Total Knee

Replacement) .

In the meantime, Shalby conducted a medical

consultation camp at Kampala with an Indian

Association. “My friend saw the advertisement in local

newspaper and advised me to take mother to the camp . I

visited the camp with Mom and the Shalby doctor

showed us the videos of surgery and shared other useful

information on Shalby and TKR” said Ms. Annes.

On seeing the video and going through the details, Mrs.

Clemence got convinced for the Surgery. However she

was in double mind. Incidentally, by this time, Mrs.

Clemence began to experience severe knee pain which

incapacitated her movements making it difficult to

attend family chores and social gatherings. After a while,

there was new advertisement from another Indian

Hospital for TKR. Mrs. Clemence attended that camp also.

“On evaluating both the hospitals, I got convinced that

Shalby ranks first in TKR surgery” said Mrs. Clemence.

After few months, Shalby did another consultation camp

in Kampala. Mrs. Clemence decided to visit the camp

again. “ This time, I met Dr. Manu Sharma and got totally

convinced about the surgery and decided for it”. Said

Mrs. Clemance with a broad smile.

Following this decision, Dr. Manu Sharma got in touch

with Mrs. Clemence’s son, Mr. David on Whatsapp and

they continued the discussion and the course for further

action.

Dr. Manu Sharma also gave reference of few patients

from Uganda who had undergone TKR at Shalby to Mr.

David and Ms. Annes which helped them to reaffirm their

decision.

nd “Ultimately, we came to Ahmedabad on 22 of January

2016 and Mom had undergone the TKR at Shalby

hospital, on the next day. We are very confident now that

we took the right decision, though late. We see lot of

patients from our country here and that itself is a

testimony to Shalby’s expertise. Back at home, we will try

to convince people to undergo TKR at Shalby, if there is a

need and not to suffer from knee pain any more” said the

mother daughter duo.
