SAT 22 JAN SalzburgSalzburg is defined by its music, although it is humbly sprung from the salt mining industry. The city is home to the annual Salzburg Festival as well as being a mecca for musical studies. Your morning sightseeing tour features Salz-burg’s favorite son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and sites from the “Sound of Music.” Mozart’s birthplace is situated in the heart of Salzburg’s busiest little street, the Getreidegasse. Enter the yellow house and see sets from his operas as well as his violins, clavichord and the hammerk-lavier on which he composed “The Magic Flute.” View the Salzburg Cathedral, the Peterskirche,

and Mirabel Gardens. Enjoy an afternoon and evening at leisure for individual exploration. Crowne Plaza (B)

SUN 23 JAN SalzburgYou have a full day at leisure to enjoy the delights of Salzburg. Your guide will offer sug-gestions. This evening enjoy a Mozart dinner concert at the famous Stiftskeller St. Peter. Musicians in historic costumes perform some of Mozart’s most famous compositions during an elegant candlelight dinner prepared according to traditional recipes from the 17th and 18th centuries. Crowne Plaza (B, D)

MON 24 JAN Salzburg/ViennaTravel via train to Vienna. Upon arrival in Vienna, meet your local guide and motorcoach for the transfer to your centrally located hotel. After settling in, you’ll have some time to get acquainted with the area before dinner. Vienna was the seat of the Habsburg Empire for five centuries, and its architecture reflects the wealth of its heritage. The city center is circled by the Ringstrasse, which follows the path of the old city walls. After dinner transfer to the Luther College Orchestra concert in Oberschutzen. Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

You are invited to join us on a tour to Salzburg and Vienna, Austria, from January 20 to January 28, 2011. The Luther College Symphony Orchestra, directed by Dr. Daniel Baldwin, will be in residence in Vienna during January. We will have the pleasure of hearing them perform at three concerts in and around Vienna.

This 9-day tour will feature the incredible sights of Salzburg and Vienna in the company of other alumni, parents, and friends of Luther College. We will explore the beautiful city of Salzburg including the birth-place of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and sites from the “Sound of Music”. From Salzburg we will travel by rail to Vienna, where we will tour many fine museums and visit Schönbrunn Palace and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, among many other memorable sites.

The tour package includes all air and ground transportation and accom-modations, as well as breakfast each day and five group dinners. All

entrance fees to tour sites are included as well.

We hope you will join us for this opportunity to enjoy the magnificent scenery and sights of Salzburg and Vienna in the company of other Luther alumni, parents, and friends, and the talented students who comprise our Symphony Orchestra.

Sincerely,

President Richard L. Torgerson and Mrs. Judith A. Torgerson

TUE 25 JAN ViennaEmbark on a locally guided morning tour of the city on the beautiful Danube. Your tour features the world within the Ringstrasse, the very heart of the Viennese flourishing of culture and imperi-alism. Tour the exquisite Opera House (schedules permitting), view the famous St. Stephen’s Cathe-dral, the elegant theaters, and Hofburg Palace, which was the winter palace of the Habsburg emperors. Return to the hotel and the starting point for the rest of your day at leisure. Marriott Courtyard (B)

WED 26 JAN ViennaContinue discovering Vienna with another half-day locally guided sightseeing tour this morning. Venture out of the Ringstrasse to view some of the distinctive sights of Vienna: the acoustically brilliant Musikverein where the Vienna Philhar-monic Orchestra plays; architecturally intriguing buildings of the modern era; the inviting parks, and a visit to Schönbrunn Palace, built in the 17th century to rival Versailles. The baroque symmetry of the summer palace is enhanced by the plan of its elaborate gardens. The afternoon is free to relax or explore. Perhaps you’ll want to stop for some of the legendary Sachertorte or another of the fine local pastries at the famous Sacher Hotel. After dinner together, attend the Luther College Orchestra concert in Stockerau, a suburb of Vienna about twelve miles north of the city. Marriott Courtyard (B, D)

THU 27 JAN ViennaThe entire day is yours for independent ac-tivities. Perhaps visit one of Vienna’s trademark “heurige” – the wine gardens where the grow-ers sell their most recent vintage. Watch for the hanging evergreen that marks the shops where a spritzer and quiet conversation are the course of the day. Tonight is the final performance of the Luther College Orchestra at the grand Vienna Konzerthaus, one of the foremost concert halls of Europe. Celebrate this musical highlight with a farewell dinner with the members of the Orches-tra after the concert. Marriott Courtyard (B, D)

FRI 28 JAN Return to USATransfer to the airport for your return flights home. (B, Meals in-flight)
