In her new book THE PIE LIFE: A Guilt-Free Recipe For Success and Satisfaction, Samantha Ettus offers women a comprehensive, proven approach to achieving professional and personal fulfillment by embracing responsibility and passion and letting go of guilt. To illustrate her method, Samantha takes back the pie, an icon of 1950s homemaking, and recasts it as a helpful symbol comprising every piece of the contemporary woman’s existence. Samantha shows women that every life can be divided into six or seven key sections – or pie pieces: career, children (if applicable), health, relationship (or the quest to find one), community, friends, and hobbies. Relying on a combination of fact-driven research and accessible anecdotes to provide relevant tips and real-world context, she explores how to navigate everything from making smarter career moves at every stage and creating a more connected family, to effectively setting goals and ditching self-blame. An enlightening read for everyone from established CEOs to ambitious young interns, THE PIE LIFE provides working women the tools they need to take back control of their own lives.

Topics Samantha Ettus Can Address

Work/Life BalanceSamantha has created a new framework to understand work/life balance. Each life is a pie made up slices that represent our most important areas, and we interact with the slices in a different pattern than we’ve been conditioned to believe. “In our misguided conception, the properly balanced work/life day looks something like: life—work—life. But a successful life doesn’t look like that. […] The real pattern of our life is more like work—life—life—work— work—work—life—life—work—life, and it varies daily.”

Time ManagementSamantha wants to show women how to gain a “25th hour” in a day by making small tweaks to existing schedules. In addition to finding more time, she offers keys to mitigating stress through step-by-step guidance such as how to establish a top-notch morning routine. “If you find a more efficient way to live each day, you will reap the rewards in the form of a much easier life. A key ingredient of any lasting Pie Life makeover is learning how to spend as much time as possible on what matters the most.”

CareerFrom detailing how to network like a pro and pursuing a dream career, to nailing interviews, finding sponsors, and setting appropriate boundaries at work, Samantha covers invaluable professional ground. “It is easy to think of your career as something driven by luck or fate or your boss or some other uncontrollable force, but the truth is that you are the baker here: you are the one with the mixing bowl and the ingredients and you need to create the recipe for this slice of your pie yourself.”

ParentingSamantha addresses the complexities of contemporary parenting with empathy and ingenuity. From the five things every working mom needs to building stronger family bonds and letting go of the guilt that comes with not being able to be everywhere at once, Samantha provides practical solutions. “My husband and I are both aware that our role as parents never ends; who they are today does not guarantee who they will be tomorrow, so we are constantly working on it. Like us, you don’t have the excess time in your life that reactive parenting requires, so by parenting intentionally, you will be proactively making your life easier.”

MarriageFrom orchestrating a “PartnerShift” to developing deeper intimacy, Samantha speaks with wisdom and urgency about many women’s most important relationship. “Every woman I’ve met who is reaching her potential is either single or has a true, 50 percent partner. If you want your new pie to work, your partner is the essential first ingredient. ”

The VillageSamantha emphasizes the need for us all to create our own village––a coalition of childcare providers, doctors, moms, neighbors, plumbers, handymen, and others we can rely on for help with our homes, kids, medical needs, and more. “You can’t work, enjoy date nights, run a home, and raise well-adjusted kids without a village. It used to be that we all lived within yards of extended family to help us out. Now that this is no longer the norm, you need to put in hard work to create a support network.”

DatingSamantha offers frank, road-tested advice for singles still looking for the right partner, emphasizing that women must choose wisely. “When single women today tell me they are looking for a relationship but won’t go online, I don’t believe they are really ready to meet someone. Opting out of online dating is like selling a great product but refusing to make it available to the world.”

FriendshipSamantha points out the often-overlooked importance of friendship and illustrates how busy adult women can forge new connections. “Recent studies have shown that our marriages are more likely to succeed if we have friends, that our kids are more likely to value friendships if they see us engaging in them, and that we will feel happier overall when we have more of them.”

HappinessFrom the secret ingredient for happiness to seven easy steps to living a more fulfilling life, Samantha tackles the universal but difficult to define subject of happiness. “So many women in the workplace are just ‘surviving,’ trying to get through the day. If this sounds like you—frazzled, sleep deprived, overwhelmed, and unhappy—then it’s time to start loving your life, not just living it.”

Samantha’s Tips

THE PIE LIFE is stacked with tips. The advice Samantha offers is simple and easy to put to work because, as she so clearly illustrates, small shifts add up to big changes.

Stick to the Golden Triangle“To get back some of your lost time each week, commit to doing all of your errands—from hair to groceries to doctor’s appointments—within what I call ‘the Golden Triangle.’ This is a triangle defined by three points: your workplace, your home, and your child’s school.”

Use the Golden Hour“Take advantage of what I call the ‘Golden Hour.’ This is the blissful hour in the morning before your kids’ alarms go off—when you can get yourself show- ered, dressed, and ready for the day at a pace that is human!”

Create Cubbies“Every member of your family needs his or her own equivalent of a cubby, and their backpack, lunchbox, homework, sports equipment, music instrument, and shoes all need to live there. This means you won’t lose time looking for lost items, and your kids will know exactly where to put stuff when they get home for school.”

Prep Meals on Sundays“Every Sunday, enlist your kids’ help, make at least three dishes for the week, and freeze them. I’m not talking about hours of drudgery—I’m talking about ‘Sunday afternoon cooking parties!’”

Get Ready Once“Many women make their lives more stressful by getting ready twice. They throw on sweats and a T-shirt, tie their hair in a bun, and dab on some lip gloss before bringing their child to the bus. Then they run home and get ready for their workday. This is a giant waste of time. Unless you are working out, skip the initial outfit and shower before you leave the house the first time.”

Let the Kids Make the Salad“Laurie David, author of The Family Cooks, recommends that you turn over the making of salad dressing to one of your children.”

Plan the Week’s Outfits“Fashion designer Liz Lange recommends using Sunday nights to look over your schedule for the week and decide what you’ll wear each day.”

Establish Your Go-to Look for Smart Dressing, Fast“To find your uniform, look at the outfit you instinctively turn to when you have a big meeting or presentation, the one that makes you feel best.”

Messy Mornings? Wear a Cape“Wearing a cape ensures that lunchbox and breakfast prep are no longer outfit-threatening endeavors.”

Advice From Leaders

Some of the most accomplished women in the world contributed strategies, personal anecdotes, and hard-won advice to THE PIE LIFE. In addition to offering her own stories and insight, Samantha incorporates wisdom from the following leaders:

Shonda Rhimes, creator of Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and more. An excerpt from THE PIE LIFE:

There might be no busier person on the planet right now than television show creator Shonda Rhimes. Shonda has three shows on TV and three daughters at home. Her e-mail signature offers a peek into what makes her successful in managing both roles, television executive and mom. It reads: *Please Note*: I will not engage in work e-mails after 7 pm or on weekends. IF I AM YOUR BOSS, MAY I SUGGEST: PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE.

When I asked Shonda what inspired the signature, she explained that because of e-mail, everyone works 24 hours a day now. She tried not answering e-mails in the evenings but that just resulted in a litany of hysterical-sounding follow-ups; people couldn’t cope with the lack of response. Her solution: “I decided to train everyone. I made it my e-mail signature, so that every single time someone got an e-mail from me, they were also reading that I wasn’t going to answer them if they e-mailed me after 7:00 p.m.”

Estée Lauder, business pioneerLiz Lange, fashion designerSheryl Sandberg, tech executive, activist, and authorGayle King, TV anchorLisa Ling, journalistAnne Fulenwider, Marie Claire Editor-in-ChiefLaurie David, author, activist, and producerMary Ann Zoellner, TODAY Show producerSusan Yeagley, actressSummer Sanders, TV host and Olympic medalistLisa Stone, BlogHer founderKalika Yap, entrepreneurLaurel Richie, President of the WNBA Marisa Thalberg, Chief Marketing Officer, Taco BellDebora Spar, President of Barnard CollegeJessica Stokes, Deputy Leader, Ernst & YoungMandee Heller Adler, Founder and President, International College CounselorsKatie Workman, cookbook authorLisa Belkin, journalistGabi Birkner, New York-based editorMorra Aarons-Mele, founder of the digital marketing agency Women Online
