As one came from Hong Kong I was with all those Hong Kong readers paying attention to the news when Hong Kong was severely hit by typhoon Catfish a while ago. But many may not have noticed that since end of September Hai Nan province has also been hard hit by persistent downpour and flooding, the situation has turned from bad to worse with the strike by Catfish. As reported the October record breaking downpour in Hai Nan has rendered 200,000 people homeless and caused a damage costing RMB 11 billions.
We often take note of events only of our usual concern; the population of Hai Nan is a bit more than Hong Kong just less than 9 millions. The disastrous typhoon damage has not quite aroused the concern of many outsiders. But a bunch of Hai Nan immigrants now residing in Melbourne have the good heart to care for their miserable country fellows. On this Monday evening they have organised a fund rasing dinner at a restaurant. On arriving the occasion as a guest I learnt that it was the boss of the restaurant Mr Hing-sing Chua who initiated the campaign.
As a regular patron of Mr Chua’s restaurant, for sometimes I have known him whom has lately become the chairman of the Hai Nan. About 160 participants turned up in this fund raising dinner. On the night not only did Mr Chua donate all the expenses of the dinner, as an offering all the employees also forfeited their salary. Mr Chua indeed has shown his loving heart and sacrifice in helping out his country fellows. Actually over the past few years he has offered to organise similar charity functions in his restaurant for the underprivileged. This was the reason why I became his regular patron.
On the night a fund raising auction was also held as well as singing upon offering. The singing standard was not important but the enthusiasm was impressive. A total of $2,900 was raised for Mr Chua to sing a song. At the end Mr Chua invited all his colleagues in the kitchen to sing along with him; seemingly the charity heart of Mr Chua has spread to all of them.
Memory of the program kept coming back to me as when I returned home. Honestly I was not fond of the program itself but I still enjoyed to be there very much. I truly believe kindness is ‘spreadable’. We do need more people in our community to spread their kindness to others.
