For faculty and universities, the SAP® University Alliances program provides a multitude of benefits and opportunities.Universities offering hands-on experi- ence with SAP software help increase graduate recruitment rates, making

member institutions hubs for the new talent needed in today’s global workforce. For students, a deeper understanding of SAP software can jump-start their careers by combining business process knowledge with en- terprise software expertise to develop the most valuable skills portfolio in the market today.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Work-force Through Education

Career-ready graduates, as part of aneducated workforce, are fundamentalfor competitiveness and success in to-day’s global business environment. Atregional and global levels, a combina-tion of business and information tech-nology (IT) skills, as well as industryexpertise, promote stability andeconomic growth.

However, with the increased need fora business- and IT-savvy workforce, caused in part by the accelerated needto innovate in business, industry ex-perts foresee a skills shortage in thecoming decade. Helping studentsdevelop 21st-century skills prior toentering the workforce is critical andprovides the opportunity for institutionsof higher learning to offer tailoredcurricula to build careers.

In fact, in a recent national poll in theUnited States,1 80% of registered vot-

ers queried said they believe thatschools can and should incorporate21st-century skills – such as thoseinvolving computers and technology, critical thinking, problem solving, com-munication, and self-direction – into thecurriculum. Computer and technologyskills ranked second in importance onlybehind reading comprehension.

The SAP University AlliancesProgram Helps Develop HighlySkilled Graduates

SAP, the world’s largest business appli-cations software company, supportseducation around the world in many

ways. Through advanced curricula andacademic research, the SAP University

Alliances program is helping to align thenext generation of business and IT

To accomplish this, SAP provides itsbusiness software suite to hundreds ofuniversities and technical institutes inmore than 30 countries, for use in dis-ciplines such as business, IT, computerscience, and engineering.

By providing advanced technologies, such as those supporting next-generation IT architectures around keybusiness processes, the SAP Universi-ty Alliances program helps universitiesand technical institutes develop highlyqualified graduates who contribute tothe core competencies of their futureemployers.

The program enables students at par-ticipating campuses to experience first-

hand how organizations operate, andhow integrated systems can help orga-nizations become more efficient, pro-ductive, and profitable. Students incourses supported by the SAP Univer-sity Alliances program gain hands-onexperience and valuable skill sets. Infact, graduates of these courses havea competitive advantage in the job mar-ket – including multiple career optionsin business and IT, more managerial op-portunities to lead across organizations

 within companies, and higher salaries.

From a salary perspective, according toa U.S. Hewitt Associates LLC survey,“. . . [P]ay levels for SAP-skilled individ-uals have increased significantly in thepast 6 and 12 months. . . . As individu-als skilled in SAP [software] continueto receive pay increases and premiums

which outpace the market, Hewitt willcontinue to follow the pay trends ofthese highly sought after individuals.”2

“The SAP University Alliances

program benefits a variety of stakeholders. It gives students an

advantage in the job market and

higher salaries, and it offers SAP

customers and partners an ex-

cellent source of business pro-

cess and IT talent. Also, it con-

nects university faculty and

administrators with a world-

class organization and provides

faculty without IT/SAP expertise

an opportunity to apply their

subject-area knowledge into the

program.”

• Engineering students work with plantlayouts and make use of SAP’s inte-gration with CAD/CAM to developan understanding of the integrationbetween design engineering andmanufacturing engineering.

Students in SAP University Alliances–supported programs use the samesoftware that SAP customers usearound the world – the SAP BusinessSuite family of business applicationsrunning on the SAP NetWeaver® tech-nology platform. This environment sup-ports all key business processes fromtransactional to management informa-tion reporting, business intelligenceand analytics, and strategic enterprisemanagement. Students who are keen

to further develop their skills, particu-larly those interested in becoming SAPconsultants, can take SAP certificationcourses.

Effective in 2008, SAP will offer a certi-fication academy (TERP10) that willserve as the global baseline certifica-tion standard for the SAP University

Alliances program. This will be availableto all students at SAP University

Alliances member schools in all regionsat a low cost to the student.

This hands-on baseline certification willprovide students with more breadthand a deeper understanding of all func-tional areas within SAP software. Whilethe certification academy allows stu-dents to appreciate the software’s

power through the use of processessupported by best practices, it also in-troduces the software’s flexibility, whichallows businesses to configure theirsoftware systems to meet their needs.

“When determining what our

faculty teaches and what hiring

companies need, it’s not about

technology alone. It’s about

understanding the business

process to achieve competitive

advantage through IT. The SAP

University Alliances approach

addresses this reality in a very

practical way.”

Center for Information Systems (ERCIS)
