The Branch Disaster Response Team of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society’s  (SLRCS) Colombo branch was deployed on the 31 st of August when an accidental fire left 37 families homeless, in the Gemunupura temporary block (GN Division: Samanthranapura) Mattakuliya. The area of Gemunupura is highly populated as people have built houses out of wood and sheets in close proximity. The cause of the flames according to authorities is that a resident in the vicinity had lit a kerosene oil lamp left to a nearby place to watch television and the oil lamp had then been toppled by some way burning the house and the other houses surrounding it, the community of the area had tried their level best to control the spreading of the fire in order to save their houses, however it was futile. An assessment was conducted by the BDRT team and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) where the number of affected families were finalized and officials of the SLRCS Colombo Branch arrived at the site of the disaster and distributed Non Relief Food Items (NFRI) like hygiene kits, clothing, bed sheets and Jerry cans to the affected and vulnerable community with the help of t he DMC and the Grama Niladari of the area. ColomboBranchSLRCS ColomboSLRCS

Colombo branch assists fire victims.

The Branch Disaster Response Team of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society’s (SLRCS) Colombo branch was deployed on the 31st of August when anaccidental fire left 37 families homeless, in the Gemunupura temporaryblock (GN Division: Samanthranapura) Mattakuliya.

he Esala Perahera is a grand festival held throughout Sri Lanka which takes place during the month of ugust and is also a unique festival in Sri Lanka. Many cultural dancers and elephants participate in theerahera dressed elegantly.

he Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara Esela Perahera which took place on the 24th, 29th, 30th and the 31st of ugust is one of the major first activities conducted by the Colombo branch consecutively for the 44 th ear where 48 well trained Red Cross volunteers were present. The Perahera initially starts off with theewadutha Perahera, the Pawada, the Rasiwali and the Randoli Perahera which is the largest.

eanwhile the Nawagamuwa Esela Maha Perahera took place on the 24th and the 25th of August 2013 ande Madinagoda Esela Perahera took place on also on the 25 th of August 2013. There were a total number37 Red Cross Volunteers who participated in both these Esela Perahera’s to make this event a success. 

this religious festival attracts a large crowd and they are vulnerable for major and minor injuries the

n entrepreneurship programme was organized by the Ambalangoda Red Cross unit and the Homagamastrict Secretariat office on the 9th of August 2013. 25 participants from the Ambalangoda area were

resent for the programme.

he main objective of this programme was to educate the community of Ambalangoda to enable anduide them to start a self-sustaining business.

eanwhile Cultural dancing competition was organized by the Lahirugama Red Cross unit and theamurdhi Divisional office on the 01st to the 30th of August 2013. There were 12 participants from theommunity who participated in this competition.

ramdana & tree planting programmes

otal number of 2 shramadana programmes were organized on 19th and the 24th of August 2013 in the

ea of Heraliyawala and Megoda Kolonnawa.

ere were a total number of 80 participants for these shramadana programmes to clean the area of balangoda and Heraliyawala.

anwhile a tree planting programme was conducted in the Cemetry of Ambalangoda on the 04th of August13 where 15 of Red Cross volunteers participated to make the programme a success.

e main objectives of these shramadana programmes are to have a dirt free area by recycling and reng material and creating a greener future.

ranch organizes a dental health camp

he SLRCS, Colombo branch organized a Dental health Camp with the regional directorate of healthrvices (RDHS) and the Medical officer of Health (MOH) office of Kolonnawa in Megoda Kolonnawa Gramaladari Division on the 29th of August 2013 aiming the vulnerable community in the area.

here were 83 numbers of children from the area who were present in neeed of dental assistance given bye school dental therapist’s Mrs, W.A.D.D.S. Gangana and Mrs. H.K.R. Subashini.

demonstration programme was also conducted by these dental therapists to educate these children one proper maintenance of their teeth.

he Red Cross Megoda Kolonnawa unit assisted the dental health camp to make it this event a success.

he overall purpose of this programme was to provide an opportunity to improve oral health of those whoave difficulties attending a dental clinic either in the government or private sector.

wareness programmes

psychological and nutrition awareness programme was conducted forhildren in the area of Ambalangoda on the 03rd and the 4th of August 2013t the Ambalangoda temple, there were more than 450 children whoarticipated in these awareness programmes. These programmes wasainly organized to promote educational activities by educating the

hildren on reduction of pressure so that they would be able to facexamination without any fear or problem and to enhance the knowledgebout nutrition and the food these children need to have in order to getroper nutrients. 

engue awareness programmes were done in the area of Waththegedarand Heraliyawala on the 10th and 13th of August 2013. There were a totalumber of 450 individuals who participated in this awareness programmeom the 2 areas. This awareness programme was conducted so that theommunity would be educated on the prevention of dengue in theommunity and to have a safe living area free of dengue.

eanwhile a Leptospirosis awareness progamme was also conducted on the3rd of August 2013 in the area of Heraliyawala where a total number of 50dividuals participated. Leptospirosis a disease that is caused due to ratrine and therefore the Heraliyawala unit chose to conduct this awareness

rogramme to educate the community so that they would be well aware.he main reason for the Heraliyawala Red Cross Unit to organize thisrogramme is because the kite season has started and many in theommunity love to fly kites which take place in open areas which areainly paddy fields.

mblem campaigns were conducted on the 3rd, 4th, 19th and 20th of August 2013 in the Ambalangoda,eraliyawala, Korathota and Lahirugama areas.

e main objective of this programme was to educate the community importance of the Red Crossovement and its activities.

ood Donation programmes were organized on the 4th and the 24th of August 2013 at the Siddamulla ande Rukamale areas.

e Siddamulla blood donation programme was organized with the help of the Siddamulla Red Cross unit in

e Madumma Bandara Kanishta Vidyalaya where 115 numbers of donors and 25 Red Cross volunteers wereesent for the programme.

eanwhile the Rukmale blood donation programme was organized by the Rukamale Red Cross unit in thearma Vijayaloka temple where 41 numbers of donors and three Red Cross volunteers were present fore programme.

e main objectives of these programmes were to promote & support the establishment of effective bloodnor programmes, eliminate the level of dependency and to support the government as an auxiliary

ternal Dissemination Programmes were conducted on the 13 , 16 and 22n of August 2013 at Richarderis (Nawinna), Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. (Pannipitiya) and Lyceum International School.

ssemination programmes were conducted for 135 numbers of participants who were present for first aidainings done by the branch.

eanwhile internal disseminations were conducted for the Sedawaththa and Dhahampura Red Cross unitsthe 25th and the 29th of August 2013 where 70 numbers of participants were present for the programme.

ring these programmes the history of the Red Cross, its seven fundamental principles, our humanitarianrvices along with the Geneva conventions are mentioned and described in detail to the community tove a better understanding about the Red Cross movement.
