01For your students it is an opportunity to mark a great occasion during their school career. Students can get to know each other and their teacher better. Equally, they get to demonstrate other qualities and abilities above and beyond their academic ones. They can get to know another country and its inhabitants. Indeed, they will broaden their minds and expand their knowledge whilst making new friends.

Why organise a school trip to Spain?

A trip to Spain is the logical way to continue the learning from class. It enables knowledge to be put into practice and moves the students from grammatical exercises to day-to-day language use. It allows the students to practice Spanish in real-life situations and validates the students’ yearlong efforts.

However, visiting Spain is not just about the language, there is also great cultural interest. You can find 41 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There is a rich and varied history in which different religions (Catholic, Jewish and Muslim) have all left their legacy. In addition, Spain is a country with world-famous museums such as the Prado, Reina-Sofia, Thyssen-Bornemisza, Gugenheim and Picasso Museum…

Last, but not least, it is a destination with a climate and coastline that makes it the perfect location to spend days of leisure and culture in the open air.

Hotel/youth hostel:This type of accommodation is suited to visits that are more focused on cultural, touristic and leisure aspects rather than practicing the language.

- Perfect for groups that are not studying Spanish- For tours where you change city every day/two days.- For groups that want stay in touch 24 hours a day.- For groups where the students are over 18 years old and who want greater independence and freedom from timetables.

Generally stays in a hotel/hostel are half-board (they include

breakfast and dinner). Choice of hotel/hostel is dependent on your

budget and the type of accommodation you want.

Normally we work with two and three star hotels whose excellent

lodgings are appropriate for school trips. However, if you want a

superior hotel you just need to ask. Additionally, we will be ready to

attend to any concern, problem or worry during your stay from our

Madrid office 24 hours a day.

Family Home-Stay:We recommend this type of accommodation for Spanish language students or those truly interested in experiencing life in a Spanish home.

- Perfect for groups who are learning Spanish - no matter what their level, it is always good to practise the language.- Great for groups of younger students. It offers reassurance to parents and teachers alike that the children are in a family environment.- Ideal for longer stays, not only because of the difference in price, but also because the relationship with the family strengthens each day.- Helpful with larger groups given that there is always a local manager to count on.Family home-stay comes as full-board. Breakfast and dinner is eaten at home with the family, whilst a pack-lunch is given to the students in the morning to take with them. Students with specific dietary needs can be catered for without difficulty so long as we are informed well in advance.

* Please take a look at our rules regarding expected behaviour to

find out more about what staying with a family.

Accommodation

We offer TWO types of accommodation: Hotel/hostel and Family Home-stay. The type of accommodation we recommend depends on the characteristics of your group - the ages of the students and desired type of visit. Discover more below to find out which accommodation would be most appropriate for your visit.

Low-cost If travelling with a low-cost airline, the college/organiser/teacher

must purchase the tickets. These types of airlines do not work with

intermediaries, nor travel agencies, or third-parties.

Furthermore, reserving the tickets well in advance is the most

economical way of travelling. Here at CIFA Travel Agency, whilst we

cannot purchase the tickets on your behalf, we will work with you

to find the best fares.

We know how difficult and time-consuming it can be to find the

flight for the right date, time and price and, therefore, offer you as

much as help as possible.

The main reason we do not include the cost of flights in our

programs and tariffs is because there is an enormous variation in

the prices of flights depending on the destination, dates and time

of reservation.

Local transportUpon arrival at your destination we offer coach services either for the entire stay of

your visit or for specific times/days, for example, excursions or airport transfers.

Conventional airlines

However, if you wish to travel with a conventional airline CIFA Travel Agency can make the reservation for you. It is important to remember that, although having to make your own reservations with a low-cost airline is less convenient, it is the cheapest way to travel and avoids payment of any kind of commission. Of course, once you have arrived in your destination, should you wish we can supply all your local transport needs.

07 A UNESCO world heritage site, Avila is located just 100 km (62 miles) northeast of Madrid and, at 1130 metres above sea level, is the highest city in Spain. Famous for its spectacular 11th century city walls – 2 ½ km in perimeter with 88 towers – Avila is the best surviving example of a Spanish medieval walled city. Its rich history is reflected in its religious and secular architecture with beautiful palaces, churches and convents.

Avila is the birthplace of Saint Theresa of Jesus and is, therefore, a place of pilgrimage. The principal festival honours the patron saint on the 15th October. Another important festival is Easter which is characterised by its penitentialfeel.

The local dishes feature veal, roast lamb and “las judías del Barco con chorizo” (bean and chorizo stew) – all hearty dishes that help guard against the cold Castilian winters. The pastries from the convents are the most notable sweet dishes, especially the “yemas of Saint Theresa” (candied egg yolks).

Nestled between the mountains and the sea, Barcelona is not only Mediterranean and European, but also Roman, Gothic, Modernist and avant-garde.Barcelona, also known as the “Cuidad Condal”, has much to offer. Come and discover the medieval Gothic Quarter with its narrow alleyways and passages, or the “Ramblas” the avenue which starts at Plaza de Cataluña and leads you to sea. Then there is the port and waterfront - renewed for the 1992 Olympic Games, mount Montjuïch - site of the “Universal Exhibition” of 1929, and don’t forget the Paseo de Gracia - one of many grand and elegant avenues in the city. Furthermore, of course, there is the rich modernist architectural legacy of Gaudi and a myriad of museums. It comes as no surprise then, that Barcelona is one of the most popular visitor destinations on offer - its vast offering of sights, cultural activities, agreeable climate and daily flight arrivals from all over Europe all favour its selection.Barcelona’s most important festival is dedicated to the city’s patroness “La Virgen de la Merce” on the 24th September. Local food specialities include “mongetes amb butifarra” (white beans with sausage), and “escudilla i carn d’olla” (Catalan stew), whilst not forgetting the famous bread with tomato. Principal desserts include “la crema catalana” (similar to crème brûlée) and Easter cakes (veritable artworks made in chocolate). When it comes to wine, highlights include those from Penedés and the excellent cavas (sparkling white wines).

07 Situated in the middle of the Iberian peninsula, Madrid has been the capital of Spain since the 16th century and it is here you can discover the famous “Puerta del Sol” square where the year is counted out on New Years Eve. Madrid offers a fantastic range of museums and cultural events. There is, for example, the “Paseo del Arte” made by the close triangular arrangement of three world famous museums: the Prado, the Thyssen – Bornemisza, and the Reina Sofía, located together in one of the most beautiful parts of the city. Similarly, you can witness three historically distinctive parts of Madrid: Medieval Madrid, the Madrid of the Austrias, and the Madrid of the Bourbons.Madrid is a young, open, lively and bustling city. With countless taverns, bars, brasseries, cafes and restaurants the habit of “talking shop” and tapas is still very much alive. It is a unique destination that offers culture, history, art and entertainment like no other. Furthermore, from Madrid you can travel with ease to all areas of Spain as it has the best transport connections by land and air. Equally, it is very accessible as an international destination. The most popular festival is that of Saint Isidro (15th May) with festivals and world famous bull-fighting. The Pilgrimage of Saint Antonio (13th June) and the “Festival de la Paloma” (15th August) are also very popular. Local cuisine comprises “Cocido” (Madrid stew), Madrid tripe, fish, and stews. 07Located on the southern coast of Spain, on the famous Costa del Sol, Malaga is the “white city” nestled between the sea and the mountains, and was the hometown of Picasso. Malaga has always known how to welcome international visitors whilst staying true to its Andalucian roots.

The busiest area of the city extends around “Marqués de Larios” street whilst the monumental area extends around the “La Manquita” cathedral, at the foot of the Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro. The Picasso museum, second only to that of Paris, offers a full representation of the painter.

The most celebrated festivals include Easter holy week, marked by massive parades, and the August Festival notable for performances day and night in Larios street.

When it comes to food, the “pescaíto frito” (fried fish medley) and “ajo blanco” (cold soup based on olive oil, garlic and almonds) both deserve a special mention along with the sweet wine.

07 Known in antiquity as the “little Roma”, Salamanca is the origin of Spanish style plasterwork and the only Spanish city in which two medieval cathedrals have survived: “la Antigua”, Roman, and “la Nueva”, Gothic Renaissance. Salamanca reached its peak during the “Siglo de Oro” or “Golden Age”, a period of flowering in Spanish art, music and literature.

The heart of the city is the bustling town square which is a place for meeting and commerce. A particularly notable monument is the university, one of the oldest in Spain (and, indeed, Europe). Nowadays, Salamanca is a cosmopolitan and lively city, partly thanks to the presence of many international students. Furthermore, this destination offers an opportunity to hear Spanish without a regional accent (the locals speak a pure Castilian) in a diverse and accessible city. The most famous festivals are those of the city’s patron saints: San Juan de Sahagún (12th June) and the Virgen de la Vega (8th September). The rich local gastronomy is based on magnificent Iberian pork - ham, steaks, sausages and roasts.

The cultural, artistic and financial centre of southern Spain, Seville rests on the banks of the river Guadalquivir and is similar to other Andalusian towns with its mixture of cultures and styles. Seville came to its zenith during the discovery of the Americas due to its important port.

The splendour originating from this time can still be seen when walking through the streets in the form of palaces, mansions and grand churches. Seville has also hosted two great exhibitions. From the 1929 Iberoamericana exhibition there remains “La Plaza de España”, the Maria Lusia park and several buildings that have been transformed into museums. From the 1992 World Expo came the “Isla de la Cartuja” which today is a business and theme park. Seville’s most famous monument is the Giralda, formerly the minaret of a mosque and now the bell tower of the cathedral. The city is also the focal point of bullfighting and flamenco. Visitors love the people, the good humour and the happiness that emanates from this city.

The two most important festivals are Easter and the April Fair.

Local gastronomy includes gazpacho, fried fish, “huevos a la flamenca” (eggs with ham and tomatoes) and Andalusian stew. Desserts include cakes, fritters and Easter “torrijas” (bread pudding).
