Our actions are a reflection of our hearts and when we place other things above God on our priority list, we are honoring them above God. What has first priority when church is missed for a ballgame? What has first priority when the newspaper is read before the Bible? What has first priority when advice is sought on social media rather than from God through prayer and Bible study? God wants us to love Him so completely that our every action is a testimony of Him and we honor Him first in everything we do.

Days before Jesus’ death, a woman brought a box of ointment and anointed Jesus’ head with it. The ointment was very valuable and those who witnessed her actions were upset and thought she had wasted it. They thought selling the ointment and giving the money to the poor would have been a better choice and were very critical of her. Jesus told them to leave her alone; she had done a good work by honoring Him in this way.

Her actions were a demonstration of how much she loved Jesus. When we love Jesus the way we should, our actions will demonstrate our love for Him. Jesus wants everything we do—from the way we treat others to the way we take care of ourselves—to be a reflection of our love for Him.

Choose one or more:

Give each child a copy of the Revelation 4:11 activity sheet found in the Reproducible Book, a cotton swab and washable paint. Each child may use the cotton swab and paint to fill in the dots on the activity sheet.

Preschool Adaptation: For younger children, you may want to shorten the memory verses to make it easier to remember. As you say the words, “Thou art worthy, O Lord,” with the children clap your hands and move around the room.

1st & 2nd Grade Adaptation: Write the words of the memory verse on index cards and give each child one. Tape enough envelopes for each index card onto a board or wall. Play musical chairs. The child who ends up without a chair must tape their card onto the correct envelope. The child will need to say the verse in order to know which envelope would be the appropriate place for each word. When all the cards are taped to the envelopes, the child who ends up without a chair must place their index card inside the envelope and say the verse correctly. Play until all the index cards have been placed inside the envelopes and each child can say the verse from memory.

Choose one or more:

Give each child a Home Card.

As the children receive their Home Cards, remind the children that the woman in today’s lesson honored Jesus with her actions and we should always honor Jesus with our actions, too.

Introduce the Home Activity by encouraging the children to consider their actions throughout the week and make conscious choices to honor Jesus in everything they do.

Singing is a great way to begin each SPLASH session!

Traditional Worship Option: “O Be Careful, Little Eyes”; “If You’re Happy (Action Bible Songs) “Down in My Heart” (Sunday School Songs)

Mixed Worship Option: “O Be Careful, Little Eyes”; “If You’re Happy” (Action Bible Songs) “Every Move I Make”; “Thy Word” (Worship for Kids 2)

Contemporary Worship Option: “Every Move I Make”; “Thy Word” (Worship for Kids 2) “Step by Step” (Worship for Kids 1)

Before jumping into the Bible truth of this SPLASH session, lead the children in a time of prayer. You may want to pray:

God will bless this SPLASH session.

Each child will learn and grow in God’s Word.

Each child will desire to honor God with his actions.

Open your Bible to Mark 14:3-9 and share the Bible narrative with the children. Use the Lesson 1 Learn Visual and activities to help the children learn that the woman in today’s lesson loved Jesus and demonstrated that love through her actions. Display the Unit 1 Visual.

Choose one or more:

Purchase and bring spikenard essential oil to SPLASH and let each child smell it. You may want to research the uses for spikenard and share this narrative also.

Preschool Adaptation: To reinforce the Bible, give each child a small gift box and small air freshener that will fit inside. Provide various art supplies for each child to use to decorate his box. Encourage him to give the gift to someone he loves and wants to do something nice for.

1st & 2nd Grade Adaptation: Give each child a copy of An Act of Love activity sheet found in the Reproducible Book and a pencil. Encourage him to complete the activity by finding eight differences in the two pictures.

Introduce the Unit 1 Visual and the Good News Gazette Visual.

This unit is all about honoring Jesus. You may want to take a few minutes to share the definition of honor and explain what it means to honor someone.

A woman gave something very valuable to Jesus even though others were upset about it. Lead the children in an activity to teach them to give of themselves to God.

Choose one or more:

Assist the children in making hearts for Jesus. Give the children a heart cut from construction paper, markers and various other art supplies. Encourage the children to write To: Jesus on their heart and discuss the types of hearts Jesus wants. (giving, humble, loving and so forth)

Preschool Adaptation: Use the Lesson 1 Activity Visual to help the children understand how they can give of themselves to God. As you discuss each picture, ask the children to tell you how the children in the picture are giving of themselves to God and if they think they can give of themselves in that way also.

1st & 2nd Grade Adaptation: Give each child a small piece of paper or index card and tell him to write one or two ways he can give of himself to Jesus. Collect the index cards and read and discuss them.
