ndependence Day, along with our very ownWater Festival, makes July one of the best

months of all to live in Beaufort County. Growing upI’d so look forward to this month because I knew, evenat a young age, that I’d get to spend extra time withmy friends and family (and, of course, that I’d get achance to eat tons of great food).

Soon we’ll again celebrate the freedoms and opportu-nities this country provides us with the people we lovemost. During this happy time we’ll see our friends andneighbors at the beach or the sandbar, or at the cook-out down the road. It is for our right to the pursuit ofthat happiness that so many in our families and com-munities have sacrificed to preserve, and we toast tothose brave souls, and to each other, and to the bondsthat unite us all for the greater good of a uniquenation conceived in liberty and justice for all.

Just one of those special bonds we share here inthe Lowcountry is the Beaufort Water Festival.“WaterFest,” as it's sometimes known, is one of ourmost exciting local events and one that is steepedin tradition and history. The entire town gathers tobreak bread and to celebrate in our own way thebeauty and wonder of this jewel of the Sea Islands. For 60 years the festival has played a huge part inthe lives of Beaufortonians and over that sametime, has brought in visitors from near and far.More than a few, unsurprisingly, have been somoved by the experience that they were compelledto put down roots here themselves.

This July, in honor of the threads that tie our communi-ty (and to a larger extent, our nation) together, I’mgoing to make a personal effort to reconnect with oldfriends and neighbors I haven’t spoken to in a while.Maybe I’ll invite them to join me at the beach or toshare a blanket out at the Waterfront Park. I think youshould too.

Have a wonderful July, y’all!

July 1-26: The Arts Center of Coastal

Carolina presents Xanadu!

The Arts Center of Coastal Car-olina presents Xanadu! The Broadway smash hit Xanadu roll-er-skated its way

into the hearts of theater critics and audiences alike. A hilariously reinvented send-up of the Olivia Newton-John film, this irreverent musi-cal adventure, about following your dreams, spins along to the addictive original hit film score of chart-topping tunes. Xanadu follows the beautiful Greek muse Kira as she visits Venice Beach, CA to coax an uninspired art-ist, Sonny, to build the first roller disco! When she accidentally falls in love with him, much to her jealous sister-muses’ dismay, chaos and fun abound, skate wheels turn and disco balls twirl. This delightful fun-for-the-whole-family show earned an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and was nominated for Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book. 8 p.m. & 2 p.m., Sunday Matinees. 14 Shelter Cove Lane. 843-379-2787 or artshhi.com.

July 6: Clouds of Sil Maria

Clouds of Sil Maria, USCB indie film series. Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloë Grace Moretz light up this exhilarating, behind-the-scenes look at art, acting and aging from acclaimed director Olivier Assayas (Carlos). Maria Enders (Binoche) is a renowned actress at the peak of her career. But when she’s cast opposite a young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Moretz) in a new production of the play that first made her famous, Maria must come to terms with what it means to be a middle-aged actress in a youth-obsessed industry. Retreating high into the mountains with her personal assistant (a revelatory Stewart, first-ever American winner of a César acting award), Maria confronts her personal demons and prepares for the most important role of her life. Set amidst the scenic splendor of the Swiss Alps, Clouds of Sils Maria is propelled by tour-de-force performances from three actresses at the top of their game. 843-521-4145 or uscbcenterforthearts.com.
