FROM FR. MATT’S DESK January 20, 2019 Here is a great article from Philip Kosloski from Aleteia about the Canadian saint may who may be one of the greatest healers the Church has ever seen.

--Rev. Matthew A. Nemchausky

It didn’t take long for St. André Bessette to become known as the “Miracle Man of Montreal.” He was a simple lay brother, not wanting much attention, but graced by God with a deep and abiding faith.

Similar to Bl. Solanus Casey, Bessette was a porter, the “door man,” for the seminary and daily went about his business with little fanfare. He spent long hours on his knees and constructed a small chapel in honor of St. Joseph, where he spent much of his free time.

It didn’t take long for visitors to Bessette’s small chapel to begin reporting cures and special heavenly favors. It soon caught the attention of the local Archbishop who said after visiting the chapel, “Shall I say that miracles are wrought in this shrine of St. Joseph? If I denied that such was the case, the ex-votive offerings in yonder pyramids would belie my words. I need make no investigation, I am convinced extraordinary occurrences have taken place; corporal cures, perhaps, although it; is quite easy to suffer illusion in such cases, and spiritual cures still greater have been wrought here. Sinners have come here, have prayed, and after prayer confessed their iniquities and gone away at peace with God.”

Crowds began to form and they started to ask Brother André for his personal prayers. Miracles continued to occur and they labeled him a “Miracle Man.” Bessette only laughed at the name and said, “It is St. Joseph who does these things, I am like you, simply a suppliant.”

While he never became a priest, Brother André sat with people, heard their many sufferings and prayed with them. Afterwards many were healed of their ailments, either physical or spiritual. According to some estimates, over 10,000 people were cured (with some estimates reaching as many as 125,000).

Even after his death in 1937, people continued to report cures (and still do today). Author Patricia Treece writes about one such miracle for Catholic Exchange.

Flash forward to 1954: Joe Audino began having health problems. By 1957 they had intensified. By the next year, 1958, the advanced form of reticulum cell sarcoma was throughout his body. Radiation could no longer keep pace with the cancer. Joe was face-to-face with death, his diagnosis “terminal” and his death expected within thirty days. He was in too much pain to make a confession or receive Communion, he says. He simply lay hopelessly in bed, too weak to walk, with a football-size liver. In his troubles he thought of Br. André. And no matter how bad he felt, he never stopped praying for Br. André’s help. “I knew he’d be able to help me,” he says.

He consented to an experimental treatment that never helped anyone else. But shortly after, he was cancer free. His doctor Philip Rubin, chairman of radiation therapy at the University of Rochester Cancer Center, says, “There is no clear scientific explanation for his cure.”

St. André Bessette was a simple man, with a simple faith, a “mustard-seed faith” which could move mountains. He knew in his heart God could heal people and perform miracles, never doubting the power of God.

With a faith like his, nothing was impossible.

Eucharistic Miracle of Legnica Poland (December, 2013)

Eucharistic Miracle in Legnica Poland (December 2013) The miracle happened at the Christmas Mass of

2013, when a consecrated host fell to the ground during the distribution of the communion in the Shrine of San Jacinto, it is worth mentioning that St. Jacinto was a 13th century Polish Dominican religious, a great preacher of the Eucharist and the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

The host was collected and placed in a container with water (vasculum) so that it could dissolve, as the canonical norms command in those cases; however, once in the water, a red stain of singular texture appeared on the host, suggesting human tissue. The then Bishop of Legnica, Stefan Cichy, instituted a commission to investigate what happened with the sacred form and in February 2014, with the permission of the diocese, a fragment of host with the appearance of bloody tissue was removed and placed on a body. After that, samples were collected to be analyzed in laboratories of different forensic institutes. Physicians from the departments of legal medicine consulted verified that the collected fragments contained transverse striated muscle cells similar to those of the cardiac muscle. According to the Catholic Herald, the exams were conducted in the department of legal medicine, in Wroclaw (in German: Breslau), at the beginning of 2014. Another study was carried out later by the department of legal medicine of the Pomeranian Medical University, in Szczecin (in German: Stettin, in Spanish Estetino), and the laboratory concluded that the tissue is of human origin, and signs were suffered a long agony. " Considering the importance of medical legal opinions, in January 2016 D. Kiernikowski took the case to the Vatican, submitting it to the theological consideration of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. That important Vatican congregation declared itself in favor of exposing the miraculous host for public veneration, and recommended that the facts be well explained to the faithful. The host was exposed in a chapel of the sanctuary under the responsibility of the parish priest, Andrzej Ziombrze. In the proclamation document of the miracle, the bishop affirms: "I hope that this will serve to deepen the adoration of the Eucharist and have an unmistakable impact on the lives of the people. The hope of the bishop is of great importance for our time, when the Eucharist is intended to be delivered to public sin-ners, forgetting that in it the Body, Blood, soul and divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ are truly, real and substantially present. NOTE: Adoration is held every Monday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Mater Christi church.

Bryant’s Building Blog

I hope everyone had a great Christmas season! We have an update on the elevator! As of now, the installation of the elevator is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of February 11th. If all goes as planned, the work is projected to last about 2-3 weeks. This project will modernize the operating system, allowing for less breakdown and malfunctions. This will eliminate the fears of being stuck in the elevator car. If you are unable to make it to Mass without the use of the elevator, please call the rectory office and we will arrange for a home visit from a Minister of Care to bring the Eucharist to you. We thank you in advance for your cooperation with this project! For the convenience of our parishioners, we have scheduled this project before the start of Lent and the Easter Season.

The boiler is completed! We are all snug as a bug in a rug. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your cooperation, flexibility and support during this whole process. The installation of the new boiler has brought the Church building another step towards perfection! Stay tuned for the next issue of Bryant’s Blog!

The theme for the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) will again be “Come, Follow Me.” Although you have received your 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal envelopes in your monthly mailings, additional Appeal brochures and materials will be in “The Word” in upcoming weekends. You can either send in your gift now or wait until the Commitment weekend of February 16-17 when our ushers will hand out the materials during Mass. Please look for the Appeal brochure and materials in future bulletins. Each gift is important, appreciated, and makes a difference. The Annual Catholic Appeal benefits parishes in need, faith formation for children and adults, peace-making in troubled neighborhoods, the formation of ministers who serve in the Church and through Catholic Relief Services who serve people throughout the world affected by natural disasters and war. On behalf of those who will be served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you in advance for your gifts.
