Luke Nawrocki Director

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time TOO LITTLE Today’s first reading reveals the Lord’s super-sized heart. “It is too little,” according to God, to protect and guide only the tribes of Jacob. The enormity of God’s love can-not limit itself to one nation; divine love overflows, spill-ing liberally over all people everywhere. Isaiah, prophet of the long-suffering Israelites, might have been surprised to hear that the salvation of his people is not enough for God. But God always wants more than what we want. God’s passion outstrips all of our deepest desires. We are merely creatures. Compared to the hugeness of our Creator’s de-signs, we will always want too little, have too little, know too little, love too little. This littleness frustrates us throughout life. But exactly when we admit our littleness, we make room for Christ. NEVER TOO LATE John the Baptist models for us the grace of littleness. Twice in today’s Gospel reading, John admits, “I did not know.” Even though John has ordered his entire life to-ward the goal of preparing the world for the Messiah, he does not, on his own, recognize Christ when he sees him. The Gospel insists John “did not know” Jesus; in his hu-mility, John relies entirely on God for direction. John waits and waits—baptizing, praying, preaching—until, finally, the Holy Spirit reveals the Messiah. John had waited his whole life for this confirmation from the Spirit. God’s chosen people, the Israelites, had waited much, much longer. Surely many wondered if God would ever send the Messiah as promised. But God is never late. In our littleness, we cannot see the arc of all human histo-ry with God’s clarity and love. Each of us aches deeply for some good thing: a cure, a resolution, a rest, a fair break. When we are made to wait for what seems obvious-ly beneficial, we sometimes wonder if God is really as all-powerful and all-loving as people say. Today’s readings invite us to trust. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 2020 St. Joseph Catholic Academy will be celebrating the na-tional observation of Catholic Schools Week with an OPEN HOUSE at the Academy between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Monday through Friday, January 27 to January 31. If you have a school-aged child and would like to give him or her the gift of a Catholic education, please join us for a tour of the Academy and learn about our academic, spiritual, and social programs. We will also be registering students for September classes. Just to give you a glimpse into our offerings, this month the Amy Marshall Dance Company is in residency at the Academy and giving the children an interactive experi-ence of modern dance. At the end of the month, the Acad-emy third and fourth graders will join the professional dancers in a repertoire of several dances - two choreo-graphed specifically for the third and fourth graders who have been studying dance at St. Joseph one period each week since September. Designated by Bishop DiMarzio, St. Joseph Catholic Academy serves the parishes of St. Joseph, Corpus Chris-ti, Most Precious Blood, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Ri-ta, and St. Patrick. DOT yellow bus service makes it more convenient for youngsters to attend the Academy. Finan-cial assistance is available to those families who qualify. Time and again national research concludes that students who attend Catholic schools are particularly well prepared for the rigors of further study and their future careers. A Catholic education is a wise investment which will pay a life-long dividend. Hope to see you during Catholic Schools Week at the end of the month. Luke Nawrocki Principal
