KNIGHTS KORNER SPECIAL SECOND COLLECTION

WEDNESDAY—DECEMBER 12, 2018 AT 6:30PM Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is the title of the Blessed Virgin Mary who appeared to Juan Diego in December 1531. The Virgin arranged flowers in Juan’s tilma, or cloak, and when Juan Diego opened his cloak before Archbishop Zumarraga on December 12th, on the fabric was a marvelous portrait of herself. This miraculous image has proved to be ageless, and is kept in the shrine built in her

honor, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City and is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world, and the world’s third most-visited sacred site. In honor of the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Knights of Columbus Council #3449 is sponsoring the celebration on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at St. Barnabas Church. Adoration begins at 6pm with a special rosary followed by Mass at 6:30pm. A procession of the Our Lady of Guadalupe icon will follow after mass around the church premises. The event will culminate with a reception dinner at the Parish Hall. Please come and join us! Please contact event co-chairmen, Jesse Moreno (562)244-8823 or Julio Ramirez (562)706-0162 with any questions. ***BRING YOUR OWN IMAGES OF GUADALUPE TO BE BLESSED DURING THIS MASS***

HOLY HUMOR There was an elderly deacon who had to have all of his teeth pulled and new dentures made. The first Sunday, he only preached two minutes. The second Sunday, he preached five minutes. On the third Sunday, he preached for an hour and a half. When the pastor asked him why he spoke so long, he replied, "Father, the first Sunday my gums were so sore that it hurt to talk. The second Sunday my dentures were still hurting a lot. The third Sunday, accidentally grabbed my wife’s dentures. . .and l couldn't shut up!" FROM THE PASTOR My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As we continue the season of ‘Advent,’ the word in Latin means ‘coming’ which signifies for us Catholics our Lord Jesus’ arrival. Although we usually regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of preparation. The Church calls us to be spiritually awake and vigilant, and gives us four weeks to get ready for His arrival. This is symbolically represented in the advent wreath with four candles. We will light one candle each week as a sign of our readiness. Attending Mass, prayer, penance, fasting, and giving to the needy are all appropriate spiritual actions I would encourage you to do during this holy season. You will notice that our liturgical color is changed to purple, which is associated with the color of penance in Advent. We are encouraged to observe fasting during the first two weeks in particular and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will have the communal penance service for our parish on December 11 at 7:00 pm in the church. We will have several priests coming to our parish to hear your confessions. I would highly encourage you to avail this opportunity to do your confessions. As we begin to be busy with decorations, buying gifts, sending cards, planning for parties, and shopping, let us not forget to pay very close attention to preparing our hearts for Jesus. I believe you would agree with me if I say that it is in giving a worthy hear to Jesus that we meaningfully celebrate His birth among us. Finally, the Advent Wreath is a cherished tradition in our Catholic faith, and it reminds us of our need to prepare our heart for Jesus’ coming. So I would encourage you to have a simple advent table in your house, lighting a candle each week as a family, and spending some time in prayer at your convenience, and thus giving yourselves an opportunity to prepare your hearts to welcome Jesus in your home. Every effort we make, great or small, would certainly lead us to celebrating Christmas in its true sense of joy. I pray that you will find this Advent journey a blessed one! With Advent Blessings, Fr. Antony Gaspar Pastor

The annual St. Barnabas Giving Tree program is back during this Christmas season! There are Christmas trees located at each of the church exits, and inside the Parish Center.

Please select ornaments off of the trees and return the new and unwrapped items listed on each ornament. In addition to the gifts, diapers are desperately needed to help the young families in need. All gifts will be gathered and delivered to the Marian Center here in Long Beach by the Pack 32 Cub Scouts on December 16th. You are welcome to drop off gifts prior to the 16th though. Thank you for your generosity by helping our brothers and sisters in Christ. For more info, contact Laura Moller-Leon: (562) 726-4894. If you are in need or know of any other families in need from St. Barnabas Parish, please contact the Parish Office. We would also like to reserve Giving Tree presents for local parishioners. You may drop off items at the Parish Office, along with the ornament listed.

PARISH FACILITIES & SAFETY ATTENTION ALL MINISTRIES AND GROUPS Just a reminder that when booking our facilities or rooms, to follow our motto: “Leave it better than you found it!” Please make sure you clean up after using a meeting room at the Hall or Parish Center. Don’t forget to turn off lights, fans, lock doors and windows, take out the trash and lock all parking lot gates, especially after 8pm, for the safety of our Priests. We will begin to charge groups a $50 fee if these are not taken care of. We are having an issue with the Homeless on our property as well. If you see something, say something! Thanks for helping us take care of our facilities here at our Parish, and for the safety of our Priests who live here. Thanks for your cooperation. We appreciate all that you do! If you have any questions on these procedures, contact our Parish Office at: [email protected]. DO NOT LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN PLAIN SIGHT INSIDE YOUR VEHICLES.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Look around most Catholic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Baptist, often in the old baptistery, or in a window near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John’s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke’s Gospel of the angel’s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist’s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ’s birth in the Incarnation provides cause for rejoicing. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
