My Dear People, Today’s theme on the Readings: GOD’S ACTIONS NOW When Jews celebrate the Passover, they always tell the story of the Exodus in present terms, as if they themselves experienced those events: when we were prisoners in Egypt; when God brought us out of slavery and through the waters of the sea. We would do well to follow their example and see the works of Jesus and his sacrifice as being in the present, as happening to us now. We believe that Christ’s work, his teachings, and his sacrifice on the cross were not just for his followers in the past, but for all people at all times. When we think of this in our prayers, we become one in faith with that great cloud of witnesses, the saints. We have been striving through Lent to repent of our sins and failings, and to follow Jesus more closely. Today in the story of the woman caught in adultery, we see Jesus forgiving the woman, saving her from a horrible death, and urging her not to sin any more. This is new, and brings out something for which the law had not allowed—forgiveness. Of course one can sin no more if one is dead, caught in one’s sins forever. But Jesus introduces the concepts of forgiveness and reconciliation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Library Corner

Good Sunday to all. Hear we are at the fifth Sunday of Lent. Only two weeks remain on our personalized retreat for spiritual growth. It’s time to ask ourselves how we are doing. Are we any closer to becoming that person that God created us to be, that “best version of ourselves”? Whether our answer is yes, no, or not sure, let’s resolve to make the best of these final weeks of this special season. With next Sunday being Palm Sunday, it may be a good time to take a more detailed look at the life of our Lord, Jesus Christ. To that end, the library offers the following for your consideration. Continue the Journey!

The Father’s Son, by Rev. James T. O’Connor. The truths about our Lord Jesus “as they are given to us in Scripture and Tradition, and interpreted by the Church”.

Jesus: A Gospel Portrait, by Fr . Donald Senior . An “appealing portrait of Jesus’ life within His Jewish heritage and in the context of the land, culture, and history of the first century”.

Formed. The on-line treasure of Catholic viewing, listening, and reading. (stmirvine.formed.org)

Many of our C2 Candidates are on retreat this weekend at the IROEC! Through our theme, Spoken, we reflect on God's desire to have an

active relationship with each one of us, and only He can carve the path to know our full potential as we consciously offer ourselves to one another as

the Body of Christ.

STM is presenting 150 teenage candidates for Confirmation on May 18, 1:00pm. Seating is limited to families of those being Confirmed.

Please keep all Confirmation candidates in prayer, and invite the Holy Spirit into this parish

community, that we all may be disciples of Christ to one another and to the world.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Next weekend, many churches provide palms to be carried in the opening moments of the liturgy, as we gratefully recall Jesus’ entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. The children who greeted him on that day used what was both handy and traditional, since palms were carried to inaugurate the joyful harvest feast of Succoth. To this day, faithful Jews are directed to take a beautiful palm branch, green and straight as possible, called a lulav, and bind it with three myrtle branches fifteen inches long, and two longer willow branches. At the end of the temple service, everyone carries the lulav, circling the sanctuary in a dance called the Hoshanot, singing hymns of joy. In other climates, Jews and Christians alike have had to make accommodations over the years. In Italy, everyone carries olive branches today, often brought from their own garden. In England, forsythia branches are preferred, a relative of the olive, sign of peace. Germans prefer pussywillows, and others look for flowering spring branches. In our part of the world, what do you think would be the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to remind us of the joy of Christ’s victory even as we prepare to commemorate his passion? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Congratulations Deacon Tony Patronite & Bernie Ocampo!

Last Sunday, March 24th, both Deacon Tony and Bernie were recognized at the Catholic Man of the Year dinner at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, sponsored by St. Joseph Evangelization Network. Deacon Tony was the 2019 nominee from STM based on his countless hours he devotes to Christ Renews His Parish, Baptism, Vigils, Graveside Services, Bible Studies, St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus, Adoration and assisting at weekday Mass. Bernie was the 2019 nominee from Cursillo. He has been a very involved Parishioner here at STM, including St. Vincent de Paul. Both of these men contribute outstanding service to the Church and community in the humble, quiet spirit of Saint Joseph. When you see them around, please be sure to offer your congratulations and appreciation!

This weekend is the first of many Campaign Sundays to focus on

updates regarding the campaign for the permanent church. Come by the booth to see where we are

and how you can be a part of this beautiful legacy! We need your continued prayers and

FLU SEASON ETIQUETTE

With the arrival of the cold and flu season, we thought we would provide some helpful guidelines for your

participation in the Liturgy. If you are sick, please stay home. Please remember that it is not a sin to miss Mass because you are sick. If you are attending Mass, please

be understanding if your neighbor is choosing not to shake hands. A simple gesture like a smile or bow of the

head would be appropriate to demonstrate the mutual charity celebrated at that time during Mass. During this

season, please strongly consider receiving the Eucharist in the hand only. Receiving the Eucharist under both

species is up to the individual. It is important to remember, however, that Christ is truly and completely

present under each of the sacramental signs of either bread or wine. Therefore, if you are ill, please consider

refraining from the cup during this flu season.

As Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert, the Church traditionally fasts during Lent. A form of bodily prayer, fasting and abstinence in union with other Christians reminds us of our utter dependence on and love for God. A gesture of repentance, fasting

is symbolic of a change of heart as we turn away from sin to live in fidelity to the Gospel. Lenten Regulations: Fasting: Ages 18-59 fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, with no snacking between meals. Abstinence: Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.
