Violence-free FamiliesDay creates awarenesson Human Trafficking

Mumbai – All the parishes and schools of Mumbaigathered at Sacred Heart School Hall, Santacruz, inMumbai recently, to celebrate Violence Free FamiliesDay.

The program began with a prayer service whichincluded a song and dance by school children.

This was followed by an informative talk and presen-tation by Advocates Cassandra Fernandes and JuanitaBritto on Human Trafficking, and screening of a documen-tary on the same created by the United Nations Organiza-tion (UNO) showing examples from India, reportedbellevision.com.

It was shocking to see how many women and chil-dren were unknowingly roped into this big business andthen abducted, molested and tortured.

The children actively participated in the discussionsand the session was interactive.

Bp Agnelo Gracious was the chief guest of theoccasion, released a book on ‘Health of the Girl Child’compiled by Sr Natty and Sharon of Health PromotionTrust of the Archdiocese of Bombay. This creation was thebrain child of Fr Rocky Banz.

Next the High on Life for Boys and Beautiful Womenfor Girls programme was introduced. This talk and videopresentation is made in all schools of Mumbai to createawareness on children and instill in them Values for Life.In spite of the holidays being on, around 300 childrenattended along with their parents and teachers.

The best boys and girls selected by their teacherswere awarded certificates by Bp Agnelo Gracias. Every-one pledged to stand up against violence in any form andtake all precautions for their safety. It was a morning wellspent and educative too.

German Or Sanskrit: A DebateRaised At The Wrong Time

With the wave of discussions revolving around thecultural heritage of India making the rounds, it isnow the school students who are sailing on

dangerous waters. The announcement of discontinuing theteaching of German and replacing it with Sanskrit as thethird language has led students in the throes of utter chaos.Promoting the policy of teaching three languages in thecurriculum of schools, Indian government lays emphasison encouraging students to study English, Hindi and an“Indian language” such as Sanskrit. Passing down theorder to Kendriya Vidyalay Sangathan and the CentralSchool Organization on November 15, the Government ofIndia has demanded the substitution of offering German asthe third language with Sanskrit. The KVS and the GoetheInstitute signed a Memorandum of Understanding wayback in 2011, agreeing at making German as a subject ofstudy as the third language for students. Smriti Irani, theMinister of Human Resources Development, claims that theMoU violates the National Policy of Education and appar-ently, the ministry was kept in dark regarding the agree-ment.

Irani advocates that the decision of preferring Sanskritover German has been taken in an attempt at preserving theconstitutional rights of the students as well as the state.Earlier this year, the Sanskrit Shikshak Sangh had takenlegal action against KVS, moving the Delhi High Court toinvestigate the introduction of a foreign language, German,as the third language, that totally goes against the educa-tional policy. The implementation of Sanskrit as a compul-sory subject for students studying in grades VI to VIII can, however, be seen as carrying profound undertones. Includ-ing foreign languages such as German as a third languagein Indian schools has been referred to as “a Westernconspiracy” by the Sanskrit Shikshak Sangh. So, is scrap-ping the German language and promoting Sanskrit aneffort to write the curriculum of Indian education with saffronink? Known to play mother to various other languages,Sanskrit has been fervently endorsed by the BharatiyaJanata Party as this particular language plays a significantrole in Hinduism. Can the discontinuation of teachingGerman in favor of Sanskrit be a part of language politicsand an attempt to “Indianize” the education offered by thestate-run schools? At a larger context, it is vital to analyze ifstudying Sanskrit can open up as many avenues for the

Why China's churchesare full and communist

leaders are furiousby Steven W Mosher

China: China’s Communist government has been on an anti-Christian rampageof late, tearing down churches in the coastal city of Wenzhou and elsewhere, arresting underground bishops and home church leaders, and illicitly ordainingpliant priests as Catholic “bishops”. But underneath this escalating campaignof repression — in fact, the reason for it — is a rapidly growing population ofChristians.

There are now an estimated 100 million plus Christians in the world’s mostpopulous country, with Catholics alone accounting for about 12 million of thisnumber. Many of these are new converts who, eager to fulfill the GreatCommission, are busy evangelizing their fellow Chinese citizens. The ChineseCommunist Party has been doing some recruiting of its own in recent years, opening its ranks to intellectuals, business owners, and other previouslysuspect classes — even capitalists! Still, the 86.7 million formal members of thisdecaying "faith" — most of whom are Communists in name only — are nowoutnumbered by a growing and vibrant Chinese Christianity.

For China’s leaders, who vastly prefer that the Chinese people believethere is no god but the Party (and remember: they are the Party), this is anintolerable situation. This latest wave of persecution is their answer. The goodnews is that Catholicism in China is on the rise nonetheless.

Let me share with you some of the many hopeful faces of the Catholic faiththat I saw on a recent trip to China.

One is the face of a Catholic priest, serving as the pastor of a large parishnear a major Chinese city, who is determined to save souls. As we sat in hisoffice, he unrolled a drawing of a huge statue of Jesus. He intends to have it builtin secret and then erected overnight on a pedestal overlooking the freeway thatruns near his church. “How are you going to get permission from the authori-ties?” I said. “It’s Church land,” he said firmly, “I don’t need permission.”

There were no churches being torn down in the North China provinces I

The assessment will be conducted bya team of social scientists, led by TriciaBruce, Ph.D. of Maryville College inTennessee and the Center for AppliedResearch in the Apostolate (CARA),and will include the participation ofpastoral leaders such as bishops anddiocesan directors, pastors and pas-toral teams, volunteers and parishio-ners.

The survey will include questions re-lated to liturgy, formation, leadership, identity, integration, as well as family

and community among Asian and Pa-cific Island Catholics, reportedzenit.org.

The study will also convene focusgroups at large gatherings, such asthe Los Angeles Religious EducationCongress and the Mid-Atlantic Con-gress in Baltimore, and will conductextensive interviews with influentialleaders who minister to these commu-nities.

Participation in these efforts is essen-tial to help the Catholic Church de-velop a better understanding of thecontributions and needs of such adiverse community, Bishop Calvo said.

“Today, the Church continues to beenriched by the presence and growthof people of Asian and Pacific Islanddescent who now constitute six per-cent of the overall United States popu-lation. They represent a wide diversityof groups and cultures,” Bishop Calvosaid. “Some are new immigrants, oth-ers are well-established, and an in-creasing number are U.S. born. Somecome from distant lands and others, such as Hawaiians or Guamanians, are native to the U.S.”

The project’s findings will be summa-rized in a report and will inform thedevelopment of a National PastoralPlan for Asian and Pacific Island Catho-lics.

visited, but there were certainlychurches being built. The thousandsof churches that were torn down orconfiscated on Party orders duringthe fifties and sixties have nearly allbeen rebuilt or refurbished, often withforeign donations. This includes theparish church at Dongergou in Shanxiprovince that I visited, where Masseshave been held continuously for morethan 220 years.

Many new churches have beenbuilt as well, sometimes with officialpermission, sometimes without. Thisis an area where the laity often takesthe initiative. In one village, the pa-rishioners — many of them new con-verts — were holding prayer meet-ings and occasional Masses, when apriest was able to be present, in anabandoned stable.

students as studying German can.Over the years, a magnanimous num-ber of students have been going toGermany to pursue their further stud-ies. Being proficient in German, there-fore, has proven to be nothing lessthan a boon to these students.

Irani has repeatedly claimed thatthe order to withdraw German frombeing taught at the schools as a thirdlanguage has nothing to do with up-holding Sanskrit, but a measure thatcaters to the interest of the nation as awhole. However, with examinationsdue in approximately three monthsfrom now, is it a sensible decision tocease teaching a subject that is al-ready half-way through? Making stu-dents read and write Sanskrit, fromscratch, in the middle of the schoolyear seems tad bit disturbing, notonly for the students but also for teach-ers who have been teaching German.Irani is of the opinion that if any childwants to continue learning the Ger-man language can do so as a hobbyand without any academic credibility.

As we keep up our attempts atunearthing the hidden motives (if any)behind the replacement of Germanas third language with Sanskrit, let’sjust hope that the students battlingwith the question of German or San-skrit come out with flying colors.

Washington – In the coming months, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bish-ops’ Subcommittee on Asian and Pa-cific Island Affairs and the Secretariatof Cultural Diversity in the Church willconduct a nationwide assessment ofthe pastoral needs of Asian and Pa-cific Island Catholics. Findings fromthis project will be used to formulate abroader National Pastoral Plan.

“Building upon the USCCB’s missionof evangelization, and desiring to min-ister in the best possible way to allCatholics, the Committee on CulturalDiversity in the Church has determinedthe need for a National Pastoral Planfor Asian and Pacific Island Catho-lics,” said Bishop Randolph Calvo ofReno, Nevada, chairman of the Sub-committee for Asian and Pacific Is-lands Affairs. “This plan aims to iden-tify current conditions and needs, re-vealing how faith is lived and expressed

Good teaching and learning dependson three things:How much a Teacher cares? How much a Teacher knows? How many chances you get

Good Teachers are just facilitators; they do not need to teach, because no one can be taught,

they can only be brought to learningand shown the path.

It is not an easy time for educa-tionists, but an easy one for ideologueswho would rather spend more on theirdaughter’s wedding than on their edu-cation

Ideologues have made theirchoices. They know what they standfor in education. Standardized class-rooms, Common Core Curriculum, touse the name of the American version. Most countries have something simi-lar. Taxonomy of learning styles – andlesson planning based on similar theo-ries that evolved decades ago.

Love your children, but never im-pose your ideologies on them. Let themfeel, but don’t force them. Let themgrow in freedom. Everything becomesugly when forced. Consciousnessgrows in freedom, and starts dyingwhen things are forced. And up to now, this has been done. This is the greatestcrime that parents have always com-mitted against children. They go onforcing the child — they are afraid, theydon’t trust their own prayer. Indian par-ents want their children to stand out ina crowd but expect them to do what thecrowd is doing.

When I was a child, I used to gowith my father to Church. In the begin-ning, he would tell me to do this andthat. I told him, “If you tell me, I will do— but from the very beginning, I will beagainst it. So please, don’t enforce. Letme come, let me watch. If I feel some-thing has happened to you that will bethe decisive factor.”

I would simply sit and watch. Pray-ing and meditating, I would see how

silent and graceful he became. Thatbecame an enquiry… one has to knowthese spaces, too. Then the child isenchanted and a great desire arises inhim to know what it is all about.

Another one – Children learn morewith peer learning methodologies, theylearn more when they are doing things, they learn better with individual instruc-tion. Children don’t need teachers; nowonder most teachers have stoppedteaching. Children need mentors andthat’s what teachers and parents shouldbe.

Our children are creative, dy-namic, unique and diverse. And wehave had enough of adjusting to aneducation system – we now expect theeducation system to adjust to our aspi-rations. The goalpost has changed. Nolonger does the education-industrialcomplex work, nor are classes relevantany more. Classes serve one type ofprofiling; Edu-tech solutions serve an-other type of profiling. The hurdle – isprecisely this: How do we design forthe person, not the profile? The questfor the secret sauce continues.

There is no recipe, there are nofixed proportions. There is no fixedformula. Not for the whole of educationanyway. One size does not fit all. Yet allsolutions that seem to emerge thesedays are seeking scale and aiming forstandardisation in the name of improv-

ing standards for all. Despite the factthat there is no evidence that suchstandardised education provides anyimprovement in learning outcomes.

There have been traditional waysof doing things. And then, there havebeen grand experiments. Or what somepeople call experiments, others inno-vations. That is because we still havemany wonderful teachers, inspiringschool heads and balanced schoolboards. The sad truth that we have toacknowledge is that most of these havehad little impact on improving learningoutcomes.

If only it was known more aboutwhat each student was doing, whatclicked for them and where they zonedout? And then try to reduce that to asimple formula. Then we will know, won’t we – that a child in the third gradewho slows down after two hours isunlikely to make it to higher education.Right? Or similar results. Let us profilethe children and then design for theprofile. I am sure we will improve learn-ing outcomes by teaching to the pro-file.

Our children require good teach-ers and good education in order tocompete with the global competitionwhich requires improve learning out-comes by teaching to the profile – canour Catholic schools, colleges and tech-nical institutions who are the pioneersin this field in our country be able toprovide the same presently or are thenon Catholic educational institutes thatyears ago were not worth talking aboutovertaking/outclassing the Catholiceducational institutions in providing thehigh standards and discipline in edu-cation?.

Let our children choose fromwithin our Catholic educational institu-tions as these institutions have takenshape only because of the donations, etc from our community and hence it isonly fair that these institutes encourageand be mentors to our communitymembers, especially our youth, in or-

CHRIST IN INDIA –

Official Film of the 38thInternational EucharisticCongress

Memories of the 38th InternationalEucharistic Congress held in Bombay(now Mumbai), from 28 November to 6December 1964, still linger in my mind- I was one of the official photographersfor the event and, probably, the young-est!

Informatively, the official film ofthe Eucharistic Congress, titled CHRISTIN INDIA, was shot by the members ofthe Society of Saint Paul, Bombay, under the direction of Father AttilioMonge, SSP with his techniciansfrom San Paolo Filmâ™, Italy, and as-sisted by the Late Father JosephChirchop and myself from Mumbai. The architect of this significant projectwas Father Alfonso Ferrero, SSP, ofhappy memory, in collaboration withthe then Cardinal Archbishop ofBombay and President of the Con-gress Organizing Committee, the lateValerian Gracias.

For many years this 16mm filmwas shown by us to the faithful (and thegeneral public) in parishes and schoolsacross Mumbai to promote devotionto the Holy Eucharist. As informed byFather Alfonso Ferrero, SSP, it’sscreening in Italian theatres, too, waswell received. Incidentally, when filmtechnology underwent a sea change, the younger generation of our mem-bers, not realizing the importance andvalue of the old films and projectors, abandoned them all! The result: thefilm, CHRIST IN INDIA, has vanishedwithout a trace!

I would be obliged if any of yourreaders having a copy of the saidfilm, in whatever form or condition, would kindly contact the undersignedon (Mob) 9821014108 or [email protected].

Even as I wish the forthcomingJubilee celebrations scheduled to beheld on 7 December 2014 at DonBosco Grounds every success, I praythat the good Lord grant eternal rest toall those who laboured so zealously, day and night for months, to make the38th International Eucharistic Congressthe event it was!

Church is not anEcclesiastical Mall

Cardinal Archbishop of Manila isreported to have advised his priests todo away with the habit of starting thecelebration of Mass with the greetings"Good Morning Friends ". He does notsee the need for such introductions asMass is not a social function but areligious sacrifice. As LadislausD'Souza brought this subject ( Secularcitizen July 21 ) I would like to expressmy opinion. In India this custom wasintroduced few years ago by somepriests and it spreads all over . I feel thatit might have started by some priests orbishops who have seen and heard thiscustom in America and Europe. Simi-larly now even before the last blessingof the Mass when announcements are

made or when the guest priest is intro-duced, or when performance of stu-dents is recognized by giving someawards, the audience clap their handsas if they are in a theater or a maidan. We can argue for and against thiscustom, but there are many who feelthat Church is not to be taken like atheater or public meeting place. It is aholy place where the living Christ iswholly present and our voices, our ges-tures and all must be such bearing inmind the holiness of the place. To saythat God is present in particular placedoes not in any way reduce his omni-presence. It is just not an informal groupof individuals ,but people of faith gath-ered to contact the divine and to Wor-ship Him. We have to place ourselvesin the right mindset as we gather topraise, worship and thank God.

One of the moments of high dramain the Old Testament is when Mosesbeheld the burning bush with the voiceof God telling him " to put off your shoesfrom your feet for the place on whichyou are standing is holy ground." Is notthis concept of "holy ground" validthese days ? It is clear from the Scrip-ture that there is supposed to be "holyground" set apart for worship and weare expected to treat such places astruly holy.It includes dressing modestly, speaking respectfully, keepingsilence, and having a holy behaviourwhen we are in God's house. Thechurches should not be taken as eccle-siastical Malls for our convenience as itis the holy dwelling place of the Incar-nate God. Let us not dilute the eternaltruth and teachings with modern con-cepts and arguments or by becomingcopy-cats.

The Report in the Bengaluru edition of The Times of India underthe caption, ‘Jesus married Mary

Magdalene, had kids: Ancient Manu-script’ on 11 November, 2014 is utternonsense and deserves to be totallyrejected and condemned. This claimby Barry Wilson and Simcha Jacobovici, purportedly based on their study of a6thcentury manuscript, is not only atissue of historical falsehood, but alsodeeply hurts the religious sentimentsof Christians, Muslims and a large num-ber of Hindus who revere Jesus.

There were many gospels andmanuscripts written in the first centuryafter Jesus, both by those who ac-cepted Jesus and had first-hand expe-rience of him, and also by those whorejected him. Some of them consid-ered Jesus as only divine and not trulyhuman (as did the Essenes in theQumran scrolls), and others rejectedhis divinity and portrayedhim merely as human and claimedthat he was married to Magdalene. Theearly Christian community and the Uni-versal Church accepted only 4 of theseGospels as divinely inspired, true andwere consistent with their experienceof Jesus, and the rest were rejected asnot based on facts.

The manuscript that Wilsons andJacobovici avowedly base is one thatdates to several hundred years afterthe time of Jesus and hence has littlehistorical value. Incidentally, it is evi-dent that fiction authors like Dan Brownrely on such dubious sources.

One of the authors, Jacobovici, isa notorious writer and film maker, andhis writings were constantlycondemned by Christian scholars forhis unfounded surmises and conclu-sions. Besides, he has the reputation ofhaving his documentary listed by theDiscovery Channel as among the topten scientific hoaxes of all times, whichcan be ascertained from the DiscoveryChannel Website.

These authors have not followedthe usual practice among scholars ofreleasing their new discoveries in aca-demic journals for peer review andhave straightway released theirbook, obviously as money-spinningenterprise through the ruse of scandaland sensationalism.

The entire Christian Communitystrongly condemns such derogatoryremarks against Jesus Christ who isheld in high esteem not only by theChristians, and also by Muslims andother religious sects.

Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras,Archbishop of Bangalore who is alsothe President of The Karnataka RegionCatholic Bishops’ Council (KRCBC) andthe President of The All KarnatakaUnited Christian Forum for HumanRights (AKUCFHR) has appealed to allChristians not to be misguided by suchfalse statements, and also appealed tothem not to overreact and to maintainpeace and harmony.

Human Rights (HR) Day is celebrated annually across theworld on December 10th. It was

chosen by the UN General Assembleon this day in 1948, when it adopted thefamous ‘Universal Declaration of Hu-man Rights’ (UDHR). This was the firstmajor achievement of the newly con-stituted UN. The theme for the HR Day2014 is: “Celebrating 20 Years ofChanging Lives through HR”.

It was on this day also that the‘Office of the UN High Commission forHR’ was established 20 years ago. Thisinitiated the promulgation of the ‘ViennaDeclaration’ – a Programme of Actionwhich marked the renewed effort in theprotection and promotion of HR’. Theabove Office is the proud holder of theGuiness World Record for the mosttranslated (UDHR) document, exceptofcourse the holy Bible!

HR Day is marked by governmentand NGOs which schedule and con-duct high-level political conferencesand meetings, cultural events and ex-hibitions dealing with HR issues.

It is on 10th Dec. also that the UNPrize in the Field of HR, and the presti-gious ‘Nobel Peace Prize’ are awarded.India’s own Shri Kailash Satyarthi, theengineer who sacrificed his career tofree kids by giving back their lost child-hood (children who were literallyrobbed of it), and reinstating their pre-cious HR and dignity will be publiclyfelicitated.

Here, I propose, that ‘pro-life’ stepsshould be initiated in the womb itself –at the ‘moment of conception’ – (HR ofthe foetus), until natural death (HR ofold and senior citizens).

In the genre of HR, the watchdogand custodian is UNESCO; which worksto promote and guide HR research, organizes awareness, seminars andeducation on HR. It fosters coordina-tion among all actors and social net-works, and advocates democracy andthe creation of democratic Institutionswhich are the best bet for nourishingHR!Human Rights Violations

HR are interlinked and independentuniversal rights inherent to all humanswithout any discrimination of national-ity, ethnicity, gender, language, caste, creed, class or any other status. Today’sHR violations are the causes oftomorrow’s conflicts.

Poverty:It is a major factor that keeps humans inbondage. Its former HR head, LouiseArbour had said on Dec. 10th 2006:“Today’s ‘poverty’ prevails as the great-est HR challenge in the world. By tack-ling poverty as a matter of HR obliga-tion, this scourge is a feasible goal toameliorate.

Religious Freedom:One of the cardinal concerns of HR isthe freedom of religion or belief, or nobelief. In the USA this right also in-cludes freedom of conscience. In law itis ‘religion that is shielded and not the‘religious’! Religious fanaticism whichis a bane on HR should be outlawed.

Girl Child:Hidden, yet a glaring and gross abuse,is the HR of the female, who is ‘perse-cuted’ right from the womb to the tomb!As of date there have been 38 millionmissing women; and in the age group0-6 years, there are 7.1 million fewergirls than boys in the 2001 census. Thisis blatant murder! There has also beena steady increase in dowry-relatedcases with a 36% rise reported from2011 to 2012. Don’t these compriseoffensive exploitations of HR!

Safeguarding Journalists:Many journalists have died accompa-nying and writing on HR abuses, espe-cially in Iraq – 151, Syria – 67,Phillippines – 59, Pakistan – 47 andSomalia – 42. Numerous have beenjailed and tortured. Who will plead fortheir HR?

Church and Human RightsRichard McCormick, SJ, a prominent

moral theologian declared: “Unless theChurch at all levels is an outstandingpromoter of ‘HR’ and ‘Human Dignity’in thought, word and deed, her procla-mation will be false… It is only throughJesus’ New Commandment of Love:“Love your, neighbour, and even yourenemies” (Matthew, 19:19; 5:44); whichis the basis and bedrock of the Church’steaching on HR!

Faithful to the Gospel, the Churchhad tried successfully to mitigate hu-man suffering by helping abolish sla-very, and restoring women’s HR in fam-ily and society. Nowadays, it seekshumane treatment of prisoners, HIV/AIDS patients and the rehabilitation ofalcoholics and drug addicts. Andthrough its humanitarian channels ofclinics, hospitals and hospices, it op-poses the ‘culture of death’, thus effec-tively reconciling basic HR!

Due recognition should also begiven to the Church for the respect ofmenial labor, and for all-round qualityeducation through schools, collegesand even universities which instructstudents on the merits of HR!.

Through the work of its heroicmissionaries it has strived to bring the‘good news’ to the deprived, oppressedand the marginalized of their valuableHR. It has been in the forefront in thenonviolent struggle against Nazism, fas-cism, racism and exploitative capital-ism, all of which undermined HR. It hastirelessly laboured for justice andpeace, the fertile soil for cultivating HR!

Rerum Novarum:The modern guidance for HR beganwith the Pontificate of Leo X111 in hisHR encyclical Rerum Novarum (NewThing). It was particularly concerned toclarify the relative rights and mutualduties of the rich and poor, of capitaland labour, the right to a just wage, theright to purchase and own property, and the right to adequate food, cloth-ing and shelter. The State is also obligedto foster the ‘common good’ whichenshrines HR.

Vatican City: Pope Francis on Mondaygreeted pilgrims from India who cameto Rome for the canonization of FatherKuriakose Elias Chavara and SisterEuphrasia Eluvathingal.

“Father Kuriakose Elias was areligious, both active and contempla-tive, who generously gave his life forthe Syro-Malabar Church, putting intoaction the maxim ‘sanctification of one-self and the salvation of others," PopeFrancis said.

“For her part, Sister Euphrasialived in profound union with God somuch so that her life of holiness was anexample and an encouragement to thepeople, who called her ‘PrayingMother’.”

In his remarks, he made specialmention of the Church in the Indianstate of Kerala, thanking them for their“apostolic zeal”.

Here is the text of the Pope’saddress to the pilgrims from India

I am pleased to join you in givingthanks to the Lord for the canonizationof two new Indian saints, both from theState of Kerala. I take this opportunityto thank the Church in India, the Churchin Kerala, for all its apostolic vigour andfor your witness to the Faith! My heart-

felt gratitude! Keep up the good work!Kerala is rich in vocations to the priest-hood and religious life. Continue onthis path, working through your wit-ness. I thank Cardinal GeorgeAlencherry, the Bishops, priests, menand women religious, and each of you, dear brothers and sisters of the Syro-Malabar rite. I remember in a specialway the Cardinal of the Syro- Malankararite: thank you! Did you know that yourSyro-Malankara Cardinal is the young-est member of the College of Cardi-nals?

You have come to Rome in greatnumbers on this very important occa-sion, and have been able to live days offaith and ecclesial communion, pray-ing also at the tombs of the Apostles.May this time of celebration and in-tense spirituality help you to contem-plate the marvellous works accom-plished by the Lord in the lives anddeeds of these new saints.

Father Kuriakose Elias Chavaraand Sister Euphrasia Eluvathingal, whowas a member of the religious Institutefounded by him, remind each of us thatGod’s love is the source, the supportand the goal of all holiness, while love

of neighbour is the clearest manifesta-tion of love for God.

Father Kuriakose Elias was a re-ligious, both active and contemplative, who generously gave his life for theSyro-Malabar Church, putting into ac-tion the maxim “sanctification of one-self and the salvation of others”. For herpart, Sister Euphrasia lived in profoundunion with God so much so that her lifeof holiness was an example and anencouragement to the people, whocalled her “Praying Mother”. There aremany consecrated religious here to-day, especially consecrated women.May you also may be known as “Pray-ing Sisters”.

Dear brothers and sisters, maythese new saints help you to treasuretheir lessons of evangelical living. Fol-low in their footsteps and imitate them,in a particular way, through love ofJesus in the Eucharist and love of theChurch. Thus you will advance alongthe path to holiness. With this hope andthe assurance of my prayers, I impart toeach of you and to all your loved onesmy Apostolic Blessing. Thank you!

Garbage Free Delhi? It is most heartening that within a

few weeks of a clarion call by the PrimeMinister Narendra Modi for “SwachhaBharat”, all the garbage in Delhi ‘van-ished’ thanks to the tireless and strenu-ous efforts of the ministers, politicians, activists, self serving page 3 crowd etc.Their efforts obviously paid rich divi-dends. These celebrities could not findany place in the whole of Delhi whichneeded to be swept. Every area, mohalla, by-lane etc was spic and span. They roamed everywhere but in vain. What an achievement within a month! There is complete transformation in thecapital so it seems.

No wonder, when the importantprogramme was scheduled for thepolitical big-wigs and other celebritiesto be part of the Swachha Bharatprogramme, no garbage was foundand there was panic which is under-standable. The organizers ran helterskelter and after a great deal of effortand even expense, they managed toget some ‘dry’ foliage which was trans-ported to the designated plush area. Itwas carefully spread around so that theinvitees, who were decked in their fin-ery, could pick up brand new broomsafter donning brand new fluorescentjackets. A dozen celebrities made asemi-circle with all the TV channelswith dozens of cameras ready to shootthe great event. What a sight!

This episode must be ranked asthe greatest farce the nation has wit-nessed in recent years. What a spec-tacle! We the citizens are taken for adirty ride. What were these celebritiestrying to prove to the public? If theywanted to make a cleanliness state-ment, they should have swept somestinking garbage which is actually col-lected by those poor chaps every morn-ing without gloves. This type of gar-bage stinks and the celebrities wouldhad the opportunity to see and experi-ence what exactly the poor and thecommon man is required to smell andbreathe day in and day out. This wouldhave sent a strong message to thepublic that the celebrities are reallyserious about ridding the country ofdirt.

Every celebrity should adopt onemohalla and visit it every day. He/shecan form a committee of the residentsto monitor that the place is kept clean

by inculcating the virtues of cleanlinesswhich will ensure a disease free environ-ment for the residents. Occasionally, thecelebrity should actually engage him-self/herself in cleanliness drive by pick-ing up a broom [not a brand new one]and collect the garbage along with theresidents. The celebrity needs to getinvolved in actual cleanliness drive andnot indulge in tokenism. We have wit-nessed enough of these gimmicks forpublic consumption.

Actually you feel sorry for thesecelebrities who are hungry for public-ity to lift their sagging images in theeyes of the public. While the politicalclass has not matured, the voters havematured fast. They have seen throughthese games. Even before the pollcampaign commences, the voterswould have made their choices. Mostof the poor people who assemble areeither the party workers or those in-duced with sarees/dhotis topped witha bottle of alcohol. They are broughtin trucks and buses. By the way, theobservations of the CAG on lack ofhygiene in Gujarat [of all places]shows that Modi did not leave Gujaratclean. If the report had to come ear-lier, the call for Swachha Bharat maynot have been given by Modi. It isembarrassing!

1984 Anti-Sikh RiotsA couple of days before the death

anniversary of Indira Gandhi [and alsoof the riots that followed] the govern-ment at the centre showed insensitivityby talking about the compensation of Rs5 lacs. Of course the families of the 3000odd victims certainly deserve that jus-tice too. While riots were deplorable sowas the assassination – one was worsethan the other. Unfortunately, the birthanniversary of one of the tallest leadersof India’s freedom, Sardar VallabhbhaiPatel also falls on the same day – 31st

October. Two sad events and a happyone – all fall on one day. This is the irony. The Election Commission has ques-tioned the compensation announcementwhen the election code is in force. Theypromptly denied having made any for-mal declaration. But the party spokes-person – Ms Meenakshi Lekhi reiteratedon national television debate that the

party has decided to compensate thefamilies of the victims. Who is lying?

Celebrations yes but overdoing itjust to show the Congress in poor lightis bad. After all, Indira was the PM ofthis country and a successful one atthat [forgetting the emergency]. Herachievements should have receivedmention but Narendra Modi chose tomake a passing reference to her. Whileyou can have differences with youropponent while the person is alive, youmust laud his/her contribution to thecountry. This is statesmanship.

By and large the Sikh communitydoubted the sincerity of the Congressgovernment to deliver justice. This re-sulted in total alienation of the party bythe community. Opposition parties en-couraged this process for politicalgains. In fact, despite the NDA being inpower at the centre for five years it didnothing to expedite matters for bring-ing the cases to their logical end. Noone thought of any compensation ei-ther. Congress is paying for its sins ofcommission and omission. It will be aHerculean task for the party to findfavour with the Sikh community. In factthey have approached the UNHRC fora UN sponsored probe. The world bodyhas found substance in their represen-tation.

Delhi has sizeable Sikh popula-tion where fresh elections are an-nounced. The BJP’s move is to in-gratiate itself to the community. Be-sides, relations with the Akalis [SAD]are somewhat soured of late andthey campaigned against the BJP inHaryana. The BJP is looking for asolo run at the next Punjab electionswhenever they are due. BJP is averseto ‘coalition’ and would like to domi-nate the political scene, where, withthe active connivance of the SanghParivar, it can achieve its goal tosaffronise the country. The out-of-work politicians are talking about theThird Front. But how can you have athird front when the Second Front isirrelevant?

12th October, 2014 wasa refreshing day forme. Partnered by Mr.

Felix D’Souza, from theChristian Chamber of Com-merce, I was able to reliveand share some of mythoughts and experiencesarchived after 36 years ofknowing my ‘made inheaven’ partner, (29 – mar-riage, 7 – courtship) withsome young men andwomen, who had gatheredat Morello Hall (above Holy FamilyHospital, Bandra) hoping to find asoulmate they could unite with in theholy bond of Matrimony. Within ashort span of an hour and a half, therewere some soul searching questionsasked by the candidates. With brutalhonesty tempered with humour, I be-lieve we were able to allay many fearsand pave the way for fruitful relation-ships to blossom. For those who hadregistered for this get-together ofBrides and Grooms organized byLawrence and Susan Coelho of theRoyal Christian Family, but were un-able to make it for whatever reason, itis my privilege to share as much as Iremember of what transpired.

The questions which ranged fromsimple to complex to highly difficult, came thick and fast. Sample these:When will I know I am ready formarriage? How will a marriage workif 1 of the partners is an extrovertwhile the other is extremely quiet? What should be your expectationsof your partner? Which is/was thebest phase of your married life? How can you trust your partner inthese times of extra marital affairs? What is love, marriage, happiness? How will a marriage succeed if 1partner is more educated than theother? How does one keep a mar-riage alive after so many years? There were many more but they eludeme at the time of writing this. Whatfollows are not answers to each ques-tion perse, but an overall view of what

it means to get married and stay mar-ried happily ever after.

A happy marriage is “Heaven onEarth, a Paradise that even the God’syearn to enter” – writes a poet. But forthat to happen the 2 people concernedmust learn 2 important phrases at thestart of the marriage. They are “I amsorry” and “You’re forgiven”. Today Ifeel sorry for those double Thomas’

marriage we possessivelyguard our mates making our-selves nervous and wary inthe process. We jealouslylook on if they mingle withothers as though we aresomehow going to lose theirlove. Marriage is not aboutpossession. It is a partner-ship wherein we enjoy oneanother and not try to estab-lish a proprietorship over ourmates. They are not append-ages to manipulate.

The happiest people in a mar-riage are those who have put God atthe centre of their lives and union.Although they don’t necessarily havethe best of everything, with God intheir marriage, they simply make thebest of everything. It is important tohave a marriage that offers you pot-holes, detours and rainstorms, a mar-riage through which your lives rootedin love, understanding and a deepfaith in God will become a shiningexample to others around. God madepersons with the possibility of beingpairs. Gen 2:24 “Therefore a manleaves his father and his mother andcleaves to his wife and they becomeone flesh.”Just like pairs of hands, feetand eyes work better rather than asingle one, together a man and womancan do much more than either wouldachieve individually. The control knobthough needs to be Christ. It may notbe as easy to do as it is to say, i.e.handover the reins of your union toHim, but in the spirit of His love you canwork together to decide what is rightnot who is right.

Life is seldom a smooth highwayof co-operation. Just because youlove one another it does not mean youare mind readers. Communicate withone another on all issues especiallyyour likes and dislikes. Give one an-other the space to grow and develop. All your friends, activities and enthusi-asms cannot be the same so there’sno need for a guilt trip if you do thingsor go places without one another. who didn’t give my marriage a chancebecause he’s a Piscean (a water sign)and you are a Leo (a fire sign) they saidand never the twain shall meet. But weproved them wrong. Total commit-ment is at the core of our marriage. Welearnt an important truth early in ourmarriage – ‘that your mate is the stron-gest post to lean on, the 1 person whowill love you even when you mess up’.We are 2 strikingly different persons asthose close to us will testify but we aretolerant of each other. We have ad-justed to one another, learnt to appre-ciate one another’s strengths and over-look the minor irritants. Sometimes in

Called to walk in the way of theman who stilled the waters,

Called to walk in the way of theman who calmed the seas,

Called to live in the world and befree to live for others,

Called to walk in the way of theman from GalileeWho is this man from Galilee? He isthe meeting place of eternity andtime, the blending of deity andhumanity, the junction of heavenand earth – Jesus Christ.

This is my body which is given foryou. Do this in remembrance ofme” Lk 22:19. The year of faith

from Oct 2012 – Nov 2013 was PopeBenedict the XVIths calling card to theworld. It was meant to be the embodi-ment to some of the Church’s mostchallenging dictates. It called us toevangelize, to share the gospels, tostudy & discover the basics of our faith& with the help of the Spirit of God topreserve full communion with others. At Canossa High School, we decidedthat the Staff and students should bemade aware of the importance of theEucharist- the Source and Summit ofour lives. Hence we invited Fr. CliftonLobo from St. Michael Parish, Mahim,to share his valuable insights with theStaff last October. At the outset Fr.informed us that His Eminence Cardi-nal Oswald Gracias, would be declar-ing the liturgical year Oct. 2013- Nov.2014 as ‘Year of the Eucharist ‘in com-memoration of the golden jubilee of theEucharistic Congress of 1964. Fr. Cliftoncommended us for the head start wehad made. All we could say in re-sponse was ‘Thanks be to God forinspiring us’. The session was truly aneye opener for many of us who areinvolved with the social façade of thefaith and the piety of religious prac-tices. With jokes, anecdotes and a shar-ing of personal experiences Fr. clearedmany misconceptions about certainreligious practices we blindly followand helped us realize that our mustardsized faith ought to become a life long

journey by which ‘we understand whatwe believe and live what we believe’.

We accomplish in our lifetime onlya tiny fraction of the magnificent enter-prise that is God’s work. No statementsays all that could be said, no prayerfully expresses our faith in the Almighty& no set of goals & objectives includeeverything. And yet as a Catholic Schoolthis is what we are about. We plant theseeds that 1 day will grow, hoping thatthey hold future promise. We lay afoundation that will need further devel-opment. It may be incomplete but it isa beginning, a step along the way, anopportunity for the Lord’s grace to en-ter & do the rest. The fruit will be borne

grimage to the Mount and our differentOutreach Programmes made us real-ize that as we walk along life’s pathway, though the way we cannot see, weshould follow in Jesus’ footsteps for Hehas a plan for you & me. We organizedvisits for the Staff and students to theHoly Name Cathedral and the St. XavierChapel at Colaba, managed by thecommunity of Blessed Sacrament Fa-thers. Here the Eucharistic Lord is keptfor perpetual adoration in theMonstrance which was used at theCongress of 1964. The inputs we re-ceived at both places made this anexperience par excellence for they ledto much soul-searching and renewedreverence for the Eucharistic Lord, es-pecially during the Holy Hour that wasconducted before the Blessed Sacra-ment. We invited the Jesus Youth groupfor a day’s retreat (animator Sr. Mary, from St. Joseph High school, Bandra)who through their skits, action songs &shared experiences made the 300+children gathered from Canossa, StMichael & Victoria aware that in Jesusthey had a friend- one who could be thewind beneath their wings if they de-sired.

The exhibition on the Eucharistwas inaugurated on Nov 14, by Sr.Jessie John, our Provincial Councillorand was closed on Nov 17 by Fr. GeorgeAthaide, Sec. of ABE. The entire staffwas involved in planning and workingon the exhibition through which wetried to cover as many aspects of theEucharistic Celebration as possible foreg the vessels, the Vestments, expla-nation of the Liturgy of the Word, itemsused to set up the Altar, the origin of thePassover meal, Monstrance, Taber-nacle, unleavened bread and sacra-mental wine amidst others. Informa-tion on the exhibits which were made inthe Religion classes and even in theCraft classes was sourced from theCatholic Directory and further verifiedfrom the CCC & YouCat. Charts withinformation about the exhibits weremade in a span of less than 5 days.Charts of the competitions found prideof place in the exhibition as did the

in God’s own way and time. The Eu-charist is such a rich treasure that wenever fully exhaust its potential. AtCanossa High School, planning forcelebrating the ‘Year of the Eucharist’began in April itself. We understoodthat it was our responsibility as a Catho-lic school to give the Staff & students aGod-experience – a chance to encoun-ter Jesus in the Eucharist. With this aimin mind, we organized different events.A Chart & Poster competition on theEucharist was organized in each of the37 classes. This was an opportunity forthe Catholic students to discover &learn more about the Eucharist in orderto inspire motivate & guide the others. The Felt Board competition held in theReligion and Moral Science classeswas another opportunity to witness tothe Lord. All assemblies - Religion &Moral Science were focused on vari-ous aspects of the Eucharist such as –Blessing, Sacrifice, Love, and Sharingas well as on persons associated withit like Mary and the Eucharist, Parentsand the Eucharist, St John MarieVianney, St Peter amongst others. Weorganized times of Prayer before theBlessed Sacrament for the Catholicstudents and times of prayer focusingon healing & reconciliation, thanksgiv-ing, for those of other faiths. Our pil-

projects on books of the Bible and the religionnotebooks that each child was asked to maintainin which they recorded their experiences of thevarious activities they were privileged to be a partof. We released a magazine entitled ‘Whispers ofLove’ at the inaugural function. This containsheartfelt outpourings of students, their familymembers, the Staff and their family members ofwhat it means to be involved in a ministry for theLord as well as their experiences of the differentactivities. Truly bestowed with the benefits dailysent from the Father above, His mercies & bless-ings abounding, we were recipients of the gifts ofHis marvellous love. With knowledge, guidanceand support from reliable sources we tried toensure that each one begins to trust the pres-ence & power of Jesus in the midst of life’sstorms. The teachers and students accepted theresponsibilities assigned to them and the endresult is an exhibition that has awed all those whoknew of it & chose to visit it. Working in unity notonly allowed us to bond better but also to saypraise to God who reigns above – the God of allcreation, the God of power, the God of love – theGod of salvation.

Socrates taught for 40 years, Plato for 50and Aristotle for another 40. Christ preached foronly 3 years and yet the influence of his shortministry transcends the impact left by the 130years of teaching from the greatest philosophersthe world has known. Probably what promptedMahatma Gandhi to say, “A man who was com-pletely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice forthe good of others, including his enemies andbecame the ransom of the world. It is a perfectact.”

We thank all those hearts and hands whonot only helped us accomplish all that we hadplanned but also made it possible to bring thisexhibition to fruition — Our sponsors, benefac-tors and well wishers. I end the description of thiswondrous journey of ‘Encountering Christ in theEucharist’

Here we gather to remember,In the breaking of the bread,

Jesus, who for us was broken,And is now our living Head.

Every knee in heaven is bendingTo the Lamb for sinners slain;

Every voice and harp is swelling-“Worthy is the Lamb to reign!”

does not insist on its own way – say theBible. Let your love bind you withoutcrippling you. Love develops as open-ness and freshness enter a marriage. This enables free conversation to com-municate sensitivity and concern.

When we get bonded in marriage, patience is a pre requisite for harmony. We want a new house, a new car beforewe can afford them. We want securitywithout struggle. We want compatibil-ity before we’ve worked out adjust-ments. We need to slow down. You willdestroy the miracle of life by rushing it.Be patient with each other for God isworking in both of you when you letHim.

A marriage is composed of twounique creations of God. Both havereceived gifts that need nourishment inorder to bloom. Wise partners hang onto each other with open hands so thatneither suffocate in submission. Wemust not only allow one another todevelop interests and talents but mustencourage it. This will inspire us toexplore our potential and allow us thefreedom to fail.

President Truman once said, “Ifyou can’t stand the heat get out of thekitchen”. Many couples today seem toallow this principle to govern their lives. If things get a bit sticky they pack theirbags and move on considering we livein an era of click, delete, asap,————— Running away never solved a prob-lem. Just as there is no place to hide ina boxing ring, there is no place to hidein life’s ring either. A winning boxer isnot one who indulges in fancy footworkbut one who slugs it out and gets upafter each fall. Maturity in marriage isthe art of learning to roll with the punchesand also knowing and respecting yourspouse’s vulnerable/sensitive areas.

It isn’t the number of hours acouple sits in front of a TV that makesfor togetherness. Only physical prox-imity is not marital bliss. What counts ishow moments together are used. Afew minutes of gut level sharing is farbetter than hours of small talk. Thetragedy in marriage is that somecouples spend decades together with-out really getting to know each other. When husband and wife part for work,

a whispered “I love you” can seem likea never tiring caress through the day. When your mate comes home afterbeing away for a few days, the “I missedyou” feels like gentle rain on parchedland. When your partner has beenfloored by disappointment, there is nobalm quite like “I believe in you”. Whilechocolates get stale and flowers witheraway, words and deeds that say, “Youenrich my life” go on forever. Henceperforming trivial tasks for your spousethat seem burdensome for you person-ally is an act of love. Let little romanticgestures keep the embers of your loveglowing. Complement each other of-ten without bragging and never takeone another for granted. With this littleeffort the small hurts that inevitablyoccur in a relationship can be put torest allowing you to focus on the de-lights rather than the disappointments. It’s easy to think that since I am the onewith more degrees after my name or Iam the one with more zeros in my bankaccount, I ought to be the boss and myway is always the right way. Marriageis a team endeavor of 2 very differentpersons with ideas and values thathave grown out of individual experi-ences. Marital discord arises when wedo not have the patience or wisdom tolook at both sides of an issue. If we

pause to ponder our judgments, webecome far less critical and the road iscleared for understanding. Take thetime to listen to your mate’s opinionsotherwise you insult both the intelli-gence and the persona of your mate, neither of which are related to degreesand bank balances. Just as it takes twopeople to tango gracefully, it takes 2mature adults to decide issues in amarriage.

The world and media promulgatethat a diamond demonstrates the loveof a husband for his wife. What conso-lation is a solitaire in times of maritalcrisis? A well lived marriage is not onethat depends on quantity but on qual-ity. In a successful marriage, there maynot be everything but there is completeappreciation of what is there. That’shappiness for you.

For all you young boys and girlson the lookout for your partner in mar-riage, here is your starter. “Begin witha good blue print. Check God’s wordfor that. Use faith for the foundation. The wood used should be the finestgrade of love. Fix windows with prayer.Iron the house with trust and furnishwith forgiveness.” — 40 ways to say “Ilove you” – James R. Bjorge.

2nd Vatican Council:In 1965 at the last session the Coun-cil approved the social teaching ofthe Church on HR – ‘Declaration ofReligious Liberty’ – DignitatisHumanae Personae: Briefly, it reaf-firms HR are necessary conditionsfor human dignity. God intends the‘common good’ of all – the right to ashare of the earth’s resources suffi-cient for oneself and one’s family, but not to the detriment of the desti-tute.

Pope John Paul:During his world-wide travels, themost consistent theme of his mes-sage had been the denunciation ofall patterns of HR violations. Peaceis possible only where there is a justorder that ensures HR for everyone;and justice is an attitude which rec-ognizes the dignity and equality ofall men and women in all situations. And during his visit to Australia, hechampioned the HR of the aborigi-nes. He was instrumental in the fallof the Berlin Wall and in the disman-tling of dictatorial communism, bothof which enslaved nations deprivingthem of their essential HR.

ConclusionToday 80% of the world’s assets areat the disposal and pleasure of 20%.The bottom 20% are grappling withpoverty, hunger and disease. Yet150 billion $ are spent every year onarmaments, and only 10 billion $ inthe social field. The middle stressed-out 40% are demanding action toreinstate HR. The Good Word duti-fully implores for HR: “Defend thepoor. Do justice to the afflicted andthe needy … rescue the oppressed, guard the orphan, plead for thewidow” (Psalm, 82:3… Isaiah, 1:17).

You are an introvert, you knowthat, already. You dread the daywhen you stand in front of an

audience even if thesize is just 5 breathingsouls and a dog. As amatter of fact, just thethought of it makes youcringe and want to gohiding. But, chancesare, if you want to pro-mote your business tothe next level, you’llhave to stand in frontof a podium once, ortwice. Below are somepublic speaking tipsfor introverts that candramatically changeyour experience for thebetter:

Know the fact thatPreparation iskey:Spend time puttingyour speech togetherso that it flows logi-cally and is made morevibrant with stories, ex-amples, and props, such as images. For inspiration, try watching other great, yet relatable, speakers on video. Youmay even want to read the transcriptsto see how they crafted their speeches. When it’s all done, practice saying yourspeech out loud until you can give itover fluidly and comfortably.

Accentuate the positive:Get in touch with your strengths andweaknesses as a public speaker. Don’t

try to change yourself or be somethingyou’re not. Focus on what you do best-whether you have a great sense of

humor, or you’re a good story teller, oryou know how clearly break down andexplain complex ideas.

Invest in your audience:Think about what your audience wantsto hear. What problem do they hope tosolve? What hopes do they have? Givethem what they want and need. You’reaudience needs to have a reason tolisten. In your opening remarks strive torelate to them and focus on relaying not

just your message, but the reasonswhy they need and should want toknow about it.

Get comfortable with the envi-ronment:Check out the location where you willbe speaking before the event happens. It will help you to feel more comfortableand secure when the big day arrives.Another suggestion would be to plant afew supportive friends or family mem-bers in the audience who can throwyou an encouraging look or two as youare presenting.

Pay attention to your appear-ance:Be sure not to overlook a key confi-dence booster on the day of yourspeech: your attire. Think about howgreat you feel when you’re groomedand crisp in your favorite tailored outfit;when you look great, you feel great.

Start with a smile:Research has shown that the act ofsmiling- even artificially- can actuallymake a person feel more happy and atease. So, put a big smile on your facewhen you begin speaking. Many peoplein the audience will probably smileback at you, too. This will make you feelrelaxed, confident, and connected.

Let others do the talking:Keep the communicative theme goingand consider asking questions directlyto your audience. Not only will askingquestions to the crowd get you someactive participants, but it will help easeany nerves you have by sharing thespotlight. If time allows for it, considerpreparing a role-play scenario that, through audience participation, couldexemplify one of your points in realtime.

Schedule some down time:Public speaking can be a serious en-ergy drain especially if you are an intro-vert. So one of the most importantpublic speaking tips for introverts is tomake sure you’ve got some alone timescheduled both before and after anevent that will allow you to rechargeand process the experience.

Public Speaking SkillsSpeaking in front of a group of people can be a hassleif you are insecure or introvert. However, a little bitof practice and being more confident can changeeverything!

The Mystical Power Of The Holy Spirit(Contd.. from last issue)

At this juncture I wish to stressupon the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spiritembedded in Confirmation. The Sac-rament of Confirmation helps to enrichour baptismal grace, and brings us inunity to Christ. At Confirmation we re-ceive: Wisdom, Understanding, Coun-sel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety andfear of the Lord.

The prophet Isaiah stated thatthese gifts belong in their fullness toChrist, Son of David. (Is.11:1-2). InPsalm 143:10 we read : “Let your goodspirit lead me on a level path”. It is nottoo surprising to find in the letter of theapostle Paul to the Galatians that “ theHoly Spirit controls our lives” and thatthe spirit of God produces His fruit inus. “Love, joy, peace, patience, kind-ness, goodness, faithfulness (TLNT./Gal.5:22).

Come Holy Spirit is a short prayerwhich can be said daily. “Come HolySpirit, fill the hearts of your faithful andenkindle the fire of your love. Sendforth your Spirit and they shall be cre-ated, and you will renew the face of theearth. Lord, by the light of the HolySpirit, you have taught the hearts ofyour faithful. In the same spirit help usto relish what is right and always rejoicein your consolation.. We ask this throughChrist our Lord. AMEN.

In the midst of life’s maelstrom theTrinity became the force to engulf allChristians in its protective shield. Sentby the Father in the name of Christ, theHoly Spirit became the Counsellor toteach all things (Jn.14:26) and to helpus remember all that the Lord hadtaught us.

During one celebration of the no-vena to the Holy Spirit I opened myBible at random (a habit I often use inprayer), it was the letter of St. Paul tothe Romans, 5:3-5: “More than that werejoice in our sufferings, knowing thatsuffering produces endurance, and en-durance produces character, and char-acter produces hope, and hope doesnot disappoint us, because God’s lovehas been poured into our hearts throughthe Holy Spirit who has been given tous”.

How were the first Decons ap-pointed? The twelve apostles of Jesuscalled together all the faithful, lookedaround at all the believers and selectedseven men who were filled with thepower of the Holy Spirit. Heading themall was Stephen. The apostles laidhands on them, prayed and blessedthem. Stephen was a man full of faithand with the power of the Holy Spirit itis said that Stephen did miracles in thename of the Lord. Many converts werebrought into the fold. To go out andspread the Word was an enormoustask for these men. They would have toconfront many problems, mundane andspiritual, to answer many questionsand to explain the sufferings of theMessiah and His prophecies from thosewho wished to incite open rebellion.

These first Decons were brave inheart and with the inspiration from theSpirit of God their talks guided themalong the often rough paths. EarlierJesus had said: “Men can only repro-duce human life, but the Holy Spiritgives new life from heaven.” (Jn.3:6).

There was a time when Jesus sawhuge crowds and felt sorry for them. Tohim they were like sheep without ashepherd. He turned to his apostlesand told them: The harvest is so greatand the workers are so few…so pray tothe one in charge of the harvesting andask Him to recruit more workers for His

harvest fields.”(Mt.9:37-38). A fitting trib-ute to the harvester (Holy Spirit) wasdocumented in the Gospel of John. “Iam telling you these things now while Iam still with you. But when the Fathersends the Comforter I mean the HolySpirit – He will teach you much, as wellas remind you of everything I myselfhave told you.”(Jn.14:25-26).

St. John’s Gospel reminds us thatJesus asked His Father to send us anadvocate or as the apostle had put it, aComforter to always be with us. “He isthe Holy Spirit, the Spirit who leads intoall truth.”

The world at large cannot receiveHim, for it isn’t looking for Him anddoesn’t recognize Him. But you do, forHe lives with you now and some dayshall be in you.”(Jn.14:17). In the Bookof Psalms the Holy Spirit is mentionedin verse 143 : “Let thy good spirit leadme on a level path”.

Today, there is a challenge for thePeople of God. The devout have twoissues : to reach out and call upon theHoly Spirit, to renew and inspire themin the faith. And the second,to evange-lize the Word of God in prayer andaction for a universal Christianity. De-spite the odds we face in our world onlythe Holy Spirit can reset this demonicstrategy of violence and division.

In the annual parish-blessing ofCatholic homes, a neighbor and non-member of the faith had once requestedthe priest to bless her family and herhome. The priest was taken by surpriseand for reasons known to him, found ithard to oblige.

After the priest left the house, Itook it upon myself (thinking of the ‘firstDecons’) to bless the non-Catholic fam-ily and their home. They invited me onmany evenings to listen to my stories ofthe Birth, ministry, death and resurrec-tion of Jesus. Suddenly, the familymoved away on ’transfer’ to Bombay. Ayear later I received a letter from thefamily telling me that they had beenbaptized Roman Catholics.

Thank you, Holy Spirit for thepower you put in me to do a small jobin the Lord’s vineyard.
