Proposals for:
Improving the SEED-SCALE Methodology and
Scaling-Up Seed Scale Globally
IMPROVING THE SEED SCALE METHODOLOGY
Goal 1
Seed Scale - Principles
• 3-way partnership – – Outside-in partner should become local partner
quickly.– Include role of business in partnership (could be
top-down, bottom-up or outside-in)
• Human energy is the base– This could be a new principle.
Seed Scale - Criteria
• Equity - clarify that gender equity is included. Consider using the work “Inclusion” instead of Equity.
• Consider a new criteria:– Use of human energy as a criteria or as a principle. – Use of local resources over external budget
Seed Scale - SevenTasks• Study elsewhere - reframe to include training activity, i.e. bringing
information to the people• Local coordinating committee –
– Generate a structure within the committee/organize.– Generate relationships / networks within a community to transform it.– Generate relations between committees to start building a network
(emergence).– At lowest level in communities – generate self-help groups
(productive activities, savings and credit, forestry, health). 10-12 persons per group –mostly women. Each has president, treasurer, secretary, members. Has statutes and bylaws – group constitution – has bank account – with all requisites, are then recognized by goverment as SHG.
• Consider new step: Develop networks
Levels of Scale
• Not clear if Scale One is developing “quality” or “quantity”.
• Not clear if Scale Squared is developing “quantity” or “quality”
• In Scale-Squared Centers, develop local people as facilitators so they can use adult learning methodologies to teach visitors to the center.
General ideas
• FGGS needs more case studies in SS to better understand application of the methodology.
SCALING UP SEED SCALE GLOBALLYGoal 2
Channels for Scaling Up Seed Scale
–FGGS Program–FGGS Alumni–Country Programs–IT system–Other strategies for scaling-up
1 – FGGS Program for Scaling SS
• All professors should be well-vested with the concept of SS
• All or most courses should incorporate SS concepts
• Practicum should apply SS concepts
2 – FGGS Alumni for Scaling SS• Organization of Alumni Network should
incorporate concepts of the emergence theory:– Networks are relationships that grow to transform a
community– Networks evolve to communities of practice– Communities of practice become powerful systems
with global influence.• Incorporate strategies for self-sustainability of:– Individual alumni work in the field in his/her own
situation– The network itself
3 – Country Programs for Scaling SS
• Continue doing research, practice and teaching on Seed Scale applications.
• Complete the country program case studies for dissemination.
• Use country programs as Scale Squared Centers for observational learning.
• Link in country programs to participate in the alumni network.
4 – IT System for Scaling SS
• Develop strong on-line library of Seed Scale literature and case studies.
• On-line learning platform for FGGS students should continue for FGGS alumni to access is not interrupted and can expand.
• Improve www.seed-scale.org so that the methodology and materials are accessible to the general public.
5 – Other strategies for Scaling SS
• Partner with other donor agencies to sponsor regional seminars to discuss Seed Scale and present local experiences with Seed Scale (include FGGS alumni and other applicants)
• Translate Seed Scale into local terminology for better local understanding of the concept.
