Semester: Spring Semester 2016 ARCHAEOLOGY - ANCIENT AMERICA IN 1491* [Johnson, Archaeologist, B.] What was this land like, in 1491, before it was 'discovered' by Europeans? What can the Science of Archaeology tell us about the ancient and highly sophisticated civilizations of Native Americans, the so-called "Columbian Exchange" and its consequences, and the gifts Native Americans have given to our modern world? You will be astonished to learn the scope and extent of ancient civilizations in North & South America, but also how probably 80% of these people vanished before they ever saw a European. Learn about cities & civilizations as grand as anything in the Old World. There will be more emphasis on rock art from other cultures, this time around. We hope to surprise you with some rock art that you may not have seen before, that goes back much farther in time than what we usually see here in North America. The class is REAL ARCHAEOLOGY, taught by a REAL ARCHAEOLOGIST, based on a lifetime of professional work & research, updated with frequent attendance at professional conferences. Subjects will be presented with a wide variety of media formats, from PowerPoint lectures, to Videos and DVDs, with original Native flute music and digital paintings. SELF-PROTECTION - A COMPREHENSIVE PERSONAL SAFETY PROGRAM* [Eicher, T.] This comprehensive course is open to men and women 15 years and older who want to be safer in life. This course teaches empowerment, prevention, and restorative/healing concepts. Thus, it is an excellent course for those who have experienced any type of violence or assault, who are beginning college, going on a mission, or who are beginning to date for the first time or anew. The course is called Personal Safety rather than self-defense because it is holistic in its approach. It surpasses a solely educational experience and is more productive than exclusive self-defense training. Thus, the course is designed to be biopsychosocial; strengthening cognitive awareness, social effectiveness, and physical self-defense. The Personal Safety course awakens awareness, self-confidence, a personal commitment to healthy boundaries, and trust in one's physical abilities. This course examines the socialization that makes us more vulnerable to assault and violence, risk reduction, and the limits of attack avoidance. The course also covers the effects of assault on a person's psychology, development, and the healing process. Concepts are presented through lecture, class discussion, audio/visual materials, case studies, guest lecturers, active learning in the gym/lab and out on the field of life. Strategies for avoiding dangerous situations and self-defense tactics and techniques are taught, and each student will have the option to experience two simulated fights. WRITING - WRITING POEMS THAT MATTER* [Christmas, R.] This class will help you write poems that will impact readers and editors, emotionally and intellectually; and hopefully get more of your poems published, if that's your goal. If not, this class will still help you write better poems, so you can amaze your friends and other poets. Important trends and theories in poetry, contemporary and historical, will be discussed, and students may submit their work for class-evaluation. But it's not required. It's recommended that students subscribe online to “The Writer's Almanac, with Garrison Keillor” (don't worry, it's free), and to bring I-Pads or phones to class, along with note-taking materials
