SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW
Esther Steenaart Maastricht University
Maastricht, the Netherlands February 24 – March 2, 2019
February 24, Sunday evening. After a short flight, I arrived in Salzburg in the late afternoon. I took a bus from the Airport to Schloss Arenberg. I unpacked my bags and then went to the welcome reception. We got some Champaign and had the opportunity to meet the other participants and faculty. It turned out that the participants from Maastricht, including me, were the only ones who hadn’t been here before. However, everyone was really nice and took the time to explain things to us. During dinner, we had some more time to talk to others and I was surprised by the diversity of the group in terms of background, country, profession, etc. It was a great opportunity to socialize a little before the actual course started. February 25, Monday. On Monday, we immediately started off with a test to assess our preliminary knowledge. Luckily, this wasn’t an official assessment as it turned out most of us would’ve failed. This did however show us how much we still had to learn and for me that even motivated me more. After, we got an introduction into Epidemiology by Anke. To me, this information wasn’t new, but I think it was nice to freshen up. After the coffee break Prof. Zeegers provided us with some introductory information on Systematic Reviews and talked us through the steps that we will go through this week. During the lunch break we went for a nice walk alongside the water to get some fresh air. After lunch we met with our subgroups for the first time and started formulating the research question that we want to focus on during this week. It was quite challenging to find an interesting topic with six people with different backgrounds, but we managed in the end and I presented the results to the entire group after. As we still had two hours before dinner, we went outside again with a small group and enjoyed the sunset. After dinner, a few of us spent some time together in my room, having a drink and listening to music from our different backgrounds. The first day was quite intense, but very interesting. February 26, Tuesday. On the second day, we first got together with our group members and performed the search based on our research question. After, we had the chance to present our findings again and discuss this with others. We again had two interesting lectures about quality checklists and data extraction and got to apply that to our own topic after lunch. Our group worked really well together. It was quite a struggle, but we managed to get everything finished in time. We again presented the results to the group and found out that everyone experienced difficulties. That is why it was decided to give us an extra hour to work on this assignment the next morning and start the lecture
an hour later. We enjoyed our dinner again and after we went to the city center to grab a drink. We ended up at an Irish pub, were we had a few beers, whiskey and cider. February 27, Wednesday. In the morning, we finished our group work, after which Prof. Zeegers gave an interesting lecture about data pooling. This lecture helped us understanding the next step we had to take and after the lecture we were all excited to work with STATA on our own topic. We finished all our work in time, so everyone had time to enjoy a free afternoon. With a group of 4 participants, we decided to rent a car and drive to Hallstatt. The drive was already amazing, and arriving there even better. We enjoyed the view, had fun in the snow and walked through all the little streets. As it was quite late when we left, we had pizza on the way back. We were really tired when arriving back in Salzburg, but had an amazing day. February 28, Thursday. Today, Prof. Kleijnen showed us how to write a good systematic review and how to assess the risk of bias in a review. He provided us with many examples and stories from his own career. After the coffee break, we had some time to apply the checklists that Prof. Kleijnen showed, to a systematic review of choice. As the weather was really nice today, we decided to go outside and enjoy the sun a little, while doing our assignment. It really showed us that even while a systematic review is perceived as the highest level of evidence, it doesn’t mean it’s always of high quality and the risk of bias is very high. We enjoyed a nice lunch, after which we got together in our subgroups again to finish our meta-analyses and presentation for the next day. Later this afternoon we will probably spend some time preparing for the test and presentation tomorrow. This evening, we have a chamber music night, which I look forward to. Then tomorrow, we will have our final day. This week has been pretty intense. Some parts were really challenging, but in the end I learned a lot about systematic reviews, and about collaborating with people with different backgrounds. Moreover, I met some really friendly, fun and interesting people and got to enjoy the country. I hope I will be back here someday. Esther Steenaart (The Netherlands)
