The day starts early morning before sunrise with a gentle “KOKO” (‘knock knock’ in Setswana) on your tent. A camp assistant will be on hand to hand you a jug of steaming hot water to freshen up before your morning game drive.

A light breakfast will be served before the early morning game drive which consists of tea, plunger coffee, juice, rusks, fruit, cereals, toast and jams.

The best time to enjoy game viewing is in the early morning and late afternoon as most animals retreat to the shade to rest during the heat of the day.

Having spent the morning exploring the surrounding wilderness in search of Botswana’s hidden treasures, you will return to camp for a hearty brunch.

Just as animals retreat to escape the heat of mid-day, so will you. This is the time to enjoy reading, chatting, relaxing or taking a siesta.

Afternoon tea will be served before heading out again into the wilderness as the animals awaken from their resting places. As the day draws to an end, one can only marvel at the sheer splendour of African sunsets, and toast the wonders of nature with a gin and tonic, wine, beer or soft drinks.

On your return to camp, enjoy a hot shower under the starry night sky and gather around the warmth of the campfire to relive the day’s events and ex-citements.

As night sets in, lanterns and candles are lit, and dinner is served under the African night sky with the bush as the backdrop to end a perfect day.

Retreating to the comfort of your tent after enjoying a night cap around the campfire with stories from the guide, you can fall asleep to the calls of the African wild. Guests can indulge in some superb wines around the crackling fire to end the day with a decadent dessert and a nightcap.

As the sun rises and it’s time to move to your next destination, our dedicated camp staff will ensure that all your valuables are safely transported to the next camp. Guests will be treated to full day’s safari experience when a picnic style lunch is served un-der the shade of an Acacia tree.

Semunyeni will make every effort to adhere to the confirmed itinerary. However, the itinerary may change depending on game viewing and activities. We will endeavour to ensure your safari experience with us will be a memorable one.

BOTWSWANAa b o u t

Situated in the centre of Southern Africa, landlocked Botswana has Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe as its neighbours. With the exception of the eastern part where the summer rainfall is slightly higher, the Kalahari Desert forms the majority of Botswana. This predominance of arid land makes for a remarkable phenomenon: the Okavango Delta is a magnificent wetland within the Kalahari Desert. It is one of the largest inland delta systems in the world, an area of 16 000 sq. km (6 000 sq. miles) filled with water channels, lagoons and islands. Each year, floodwaters flow from their catchment areas in the moist central African highlands over 1 000 km (620 miles) away into the Delta to create the miracle that is the Okavango. Here the Moremi National Park and the Khwai Concession form part of the many conservation areas that is the Okavango Delta, supporting a diverse variety of fauna and flora.

In the north-east of the country, the Chobe, Savuti and Linyanti Reserves are renowned for their predators and large concentrations of game.

South of the Okavango Delta and dominating central Botswana, the five million-hectare (12 mil-lion-acre) Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the biggest protected areas in Africa. Its di-verse wildlife and wonderful scenery offering an amazing contrast to the rest of the country.

The Kalahari Desert is the largest unbroken stretch of sand in the world and at its core is the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a vast flat expanse of scrub-covered fossil dunes interspersed with an-cient river valleys. This area is home to a fascinating spectrum of very different plants and animals that have successfully adapted to living in such a harsh environment.

Historically Botswana is one of Africa’s outstanding success stories. Prior to independence in 1966, it was one of the world’s poorest countries and an unexplored land only visited by hardy adven-turers. Botswana embarked on innovative and proactive ways to deal with tourism, the second largest export sector after diamonds. The country’s leaders took the view that high quality, low volume tourism was the best way to create a sustainable industry that would employ a large per-centage of its people while still preserving the environment.

DELTA

This week long adventure starts at Maun airport in Botswana, where you’ll fly over the lush Okavango Delta to Moremi Game Reserve. A luxury safari vehicle will then escort you to the campsite where you’ll receive a welcome drink – one of South Africa’s award-winning wines, craft beer or a famous local liqueur called Amarula, and a briefing on daily activities and safety measures. Your glamping accommodation is a luxurious tent with a king size bed, and each tent has bathroom en suite.

There will be time to unpack your clothes and then head out for your first game drive in our top-of-the-range 4×4 game vehicle with an expert guide, where you could experience the magic of the bush and encounter elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, lion, leopards and even the elusive wild dogs.

Rhino were extinct in the Okavango, but both black and white rhino have been reintroduced in the reserve, although sightings are still rare. The rest of the Big Five are easily spotted – even the hardest to find, the leopard – are quite relaxed here. Wild dog sightings (a once in a lifetime experience) are some of the best in Afri-ca. The best time to view this incredible creature is the middle of the dry season, when the area is most flooded, and food is plentiful, where you can find the dogs denning.

For those who enjoy birding, there are some 500 different species of birds. Moremi offers very good bird watching year-round, but the best time is during the wet months, from November to April, when summer migrants make the reserve their temporary home. Wildlife viewing is better during the dry months, from May to October, when the brush has died down and the animals are easier to view.

After this, you’ll travel by road from Moremi to the Khwai Conservancy to continue experiencing the wonders of the African bush – the stars, the silence, and the sunsets. Coffee and meals will be served en route to Khwai during the day.

Here we continue with the safari, but will also take you on a Mokoro excursion and a night drive in the brisk evening air to experience the activities of the nocturnal animals.

DESERTs a f a r i

The Central Kalahari was made famous by Mark & Delia Owen’s book Cry of The Kalahari published in 1984 after several years of research on the Black-maned lions of the Kalahari. Game viewing is best during the dry season which is from June to December. One truly gets to experience the diverse wildlife and won-derful scenery offering an amazing contrast to the rest of the country and is able to rove throughout the pans.

Here you can see these wonderful large cats with their black manes lying around the waterholes during the dry seasons waiting for an opportunity for an easy meal as antelopes come down to drink. Other predators include leopard, cheetah, black-backed jackals and bat- eared foxes to name a few. The elusive honey badger, brown hyena, striped polecat, aardwolf and cape fox can also be sighted in the beautiful desert region.

The largest flying bird in the world, the Kori bustard, can be seen throughout the region as well as the African Red–eyed Bulbul, Namaqua and Burchell Sand-grouse, Dark Chanting Goshawk, Rock Kestrel and Tawny Eagle are regular sightings.

Antelope such as the Springbok, Gemsbuck (Oryx) and Red hartebeest frequent the area. The Nxai Pans are home to the famous Baines Baobabs who exposed their beauty with the painting by Thomas Baines in 1862.

The annual migration of the wildebeest and zebra in the area, similar to the great migrations in Kenya and Tanzania but on a smaller scale, takes place dur-ing the wetter seasons on the year around February and March depending on the annual rainfall. Here the predators, such as lion, cheetah and leopard are waiting for an easy meal.
