This year we celebrate the 30th

Anniversary of the

Prince William County Genealogical Society. The

Society’s first meting was in 1980. In the beginning

a small group of people who shared the common

interest of genealogy would meet at Central Library

to exchange ideas and research accomplishments. . . . Over the years the Society grew in numbers and

accomplishments. In the 90’s the Society grew to

membership well over 200. This membership did

not include the hundreds of other genealogical

societies and organizations that receive the

Society’s newsletter. The Society has had:

an award winning “Kindred Spirits” newsletter

a home at 9029 Center Street, Manassas, VA

 a growing library

an expanding collection of early family histories

a membership that reflects the diversity of our

community

continuing efforts to preserve the precious

records and cemeteries of Prince William County

a certification program for first families residing

in Prince William County before 1831.

Established a web site that contains all known

cemeteries in the County, recent newsletters and

minutes of recent membership meetings.

Established an email address for easier

communications.

The Society held a Genealogical and Historic

Resources Fair in 1997, and 1998 and an Ancestor

Costume Ball in 1999.

The Society published several significant documents:

The Manassas City Cemetery, with over 2,000

entries,

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Parish Records

1837 – 1995 Births Marriages and Deaths with

over 4,500 entries, and

Rose Hill Cemetery with over 590 entries.

The table below shows the cemeteries and

interments that the Society has documented in

addition to those that have been published.

Several years ago the Society had an office site in

Manassas but due to the drop in membership and

the rise in costs found that option no longer viable.

The drop is largely due to the loss of older members

and the use of the internet by the younger

generation to access available genealogical data.

Unfortunately the internet does not provide the

personal, human experience found in face to face

meetings with fellow genealogists

The Central Library was the first meeting place of

the Society.

9026 Center Street Manassas was the first real home

for the Society

Chinn Regional Library is now the meeting place

for most of the Societies meetings
