September 2011 National Capital Chapter – Capitalaire

President’s Corner

Welcome everyone to another great start to the year

with The National Capital Chapter of ASHRAE! I am honored to serve as President for the 2011-12 society year and would like to thank each member for showing confidence in me to serve the National Capital Chapter. I would also like to extend my thanks to Tansu Sengezener and last year‟s corps of officers and committee chairs for furthering the goals of ASHRAE and the National Capital Chapter. I am looking forward to a fulfilling year, a year brimming with growth and changes, as the National Capital soars to new heights. The Board has spent the last few months planning for the upcoming year. Several members recently returned from the Region III Chapters‟ Regional Conference (CRC) in Scranton, Pennsylvania where we participated in training provided by regional and national society officers. The wealth of information obtained will better enable us to continue to achieve the goals we have established for the 2011 – 2012 society year. The chapter has revamped our website, www.nccashrae.org, to better serve our members. In addition to modifying the site to better provide information on chapter events, we have also added a new “Chapter Members Only“ section for National Capital Chapter

members. Members will now have access to previous

chapter presentations and in the future, the chapter directory, where portions of the directory will be maintained and updated regularly. The new website will greatly improve the monthly meeting online registration process as well as the online payment process for all chapter events. In order to benefit from all that National

Capital has to offer, I would encourage all area assigned

members to pay the National Capital Chapter dues of $40.00. This allows you to gain all the member benefits including reduced rates for Dinner Meetings, access to all chapter presentations, access to all the chapter‟s reference materials, and access to the online directory, to name a few. During the first half of the summer, the chapter conducted a survey on potential programs for the upcoming year. First, I would like to thank all participants as your feedback was extremely beneficial in our selection of topics for our Professional Enrichment Seminar (PES) and Dinner presentations. This year we have planned seminars including Net Zero Energy Design, Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems, BIM, and Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems. The programs topics were a consensus of the topics selected on the survey. As we strive to make improvements in our meeting programs, I would again like to encourage all members to provide feedback so that we can better serve your needs.

In addition to the monthly chapter meetings, we have scheduled a series of social events for members. We will be hosting our 6

th Annual Winter Party in January and

our annual Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) bowling social in December. We are also looking forward to hosting a Texas Hold „Em tournament in October, as well as our annual Golf tournament next spring. The committee chairs are actively planning these events. Please check our website regularly for more information. In his address at the Annual Meeting in Montreal in June, Society President Ron Jarnagin discussed his theme, “Sustaining ASHRAE through Leadership”. President Jarnagin stated that during his year as ASHRAE president, the pillars of his theme will be developing the skill sets of our future leaders in both their ability to lead in ASHRAE as well as leaders in the HVAC&R industry.

President Jarnagin

issued a challenge to all members to state how they will “step up” and help ASHRAE fulfill this goal. One of the ways we at

National Capital can do this is by increasing our involvement with our student chapters whose members are the future of our industry. In addition to increasing our involvement with student members at The University of Maryland and the Northern Virginia Community College, we are currently studying the possibility of establishing a student chapter at Catholic University and other universities in our area that have an engineering program that focuses on the sciences of HVAC&R. As you may know, the biennial Solar Decathlon is returning to Washington DC. This year‟s event is scheduled to be held from September 23

rd thru October

2nd

and at West Potomac Park on the National Mall. ASHRAE is once again a sponsor of the Solar Decathlon, and ASHRAE members will have an opportunity to share their knowledge and showcase the Society‟s efforts related to sustainability and energy efficiency. The Solar Decathlon houses and surrounding solar village will be open to the public from September 23

rd thru October 2

nd

from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. (weekdays) and 10 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (weekends). In addition to touring of the solar village, visitors will be able to participate in several workshops highlighting net-zero energy systems. Check our website for events taking placing during the Solar

“But it also means that we engage in activities that position ASHRAE as a global leader, and that ASHRAE uses its leadership to strengthen our industry.” - Ron Jarnagin – ASHRAE President

Decathlon or visit the 2011 Solar Decathlon„s website at www.solardecathlon.gov. For the 2011 – 2012 society year, we will continue hosting our monthly chapter meetings at the Arlington Hilton at 950 Stafford Street in Arlington. The close proximity to the Ballston Metro has been cited by our members as one of the amenities of the location. Our September meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 13

th. The Arlington Hilton had previous

commitments for a majority of the Wednesdays in the month of September and the board wanted to keep the meeting location consistent. While this is a departure from our regularly Chapter Meeting schedule, we will resume our Wednesday schedule with the October meeting. Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to the volunteers and their respective employers for their support and commitment to the National Capital Chapter. As you know, the sacrifice and commitment by National Capital Chapter ASHRAE volunteers, both with the local chapter and at the national level are the reason for the success of the chapter. Thank you again, and with your commitment and support, I am assured of a successful, productive, and rewarding year at the National Capital Chapter. Best Regards, Dunstan L. Macauley, III President – National Capital Chapter 2011 – 2012

PES Presentation Net-Zero Energy Buildings – Where are we headed and how do we get

there?

This presentation starts with an hour long discussion of the sustainable building movement and the direction the building industry is heading with regards to net zero energy buildings. After convincing everyone that sustainability is a worthwhile topic, we will spend the remaining 1.5 hours going through one or more NZEB examples. Establish modeling (relax, I will not be discussing building modeling) & economic parameters, find the switching points, and discuss costs required to add the necessary renewable energy. Note: The purpose of this short course is to show everyone in the audience that they already know how to design a NZEB. If I do my job well, everyone will leave saying, ‘that was simple, I could have given that presentation.’ – Andy Price

Dinner Presentation The Future of Emission Trading – How Climate Change

Strategies can Lead to a Clean Energy Economy

The discussion will begin with an overview of efforts to regulate greenhouse gases in the U.S. and will conclude with a look toward the future. An overview of the status of greenhouse gas legislation in the U.S. will be presented, followed by a discussion of the current political climate for both federal and state legislation of greenhouse gases. The presentation will also cover regulations already in place (such as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative or RGGI) as well as those under development by the U.S. The discussion will conclude with a focus on opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the buildings sector and through improvements in end-use efficiency.

Speaker: Sara Hayes

Sara Hayes has assisted in the development and analysis of several state and regional pollution reduction

programs, initially as a consultant, and later with the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC). As a consultant she advised industry, Wall Street and government groups, such as the Clean Power Group, the Clean Air Task Force and Enron on emissions trading programs including the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, OTC NOx Budget Program, NOx SIP Call, Title IV Acid Rain Trading Program, European Union Emissions Trading Scheme, the Kyoto Protocol and a range of voluntary carbon trading efforts. At the OTC, Ms. Hayes worked to develop consensus approaches for pollution mitigation between states and tribes in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions and was actively involved in the development of a regional strategy for the adoption of a multipollutant emissions trading program, work that was used to create the RGGI emissions inventory. As an attorney Sara has advised energy trading desks, investment banks and hedge funds on proposed investment opportunities in the greenhouse gas offset and emission trading sector and the implications of legislative and regulatory efforts. She headed the development of a consensus position for a group of investment banks in response to the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture's Climate Change Questionnaire. Sara has advised on the development of industry standard documents for trading environmental products including the U.S. emissions allowances, renewable energy certificates and RGGI futures. Ms. Hayes currently works at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient economy where she focuses on federal policy and utilities. In her previous life Sara was a helicopter mechanic in the U.S. Army Reserves, a college basketball player and a camp counselor.
