The chair borne warrior, as his friends

fondly called him, and flying officer MP Anil

Kumar, who lived the life of a paraplegic for

thirty years after a motorbike accident

paralysed him from the neck down, died on

Tuesday at the paraplegic rehabilitation

centre at Khadki on Tuesday.

He was known as a great writer, who loved

his young students and had a vast knowledge

on almost every subject under the sun. He

shot to fame when the Maharashtra State

Board published an essay by him in school

textbooks in 1995, as a tribute to his life and

courage. He wrote most of his work on a

computer, typing with a pencil between his

teeth.

Popular for his cheerfulness and fighting

spirit, Anil Kumar was a fighter plane pilot

with the Indian Air force. However, life

demanded that he fought a different battle.

Anil Kumar crashed headlong into a barrier

at the Kirkee cantonment camp as he was on

his way to work in the third year of his

service. He broke his neck and was

paralysed from the neck down. He spent 30

years of his life after that as a paraplegic at

the military hospital in Kirkee. He died on

Tuesday of acute myeloid leukaemia.

Kumar’s friend, Vinita Deshmukh, a senior

journalist and RTI activist, describes his

handwriting as beautiful. She says he’s write

using a pencil, held to his mouth.

Stories of exchanging ages have thrilled us

over the ages, and filled us with awe when

our grannies had narrated them at

bedtime. Here is one such story and this is

indeed something all of us have wished for

at some point of time in our lives.

Subal woke up one morning to discover

himself quite smaller. His clothes became

too big for him, short sleeves longer than

his arms almost touching his feet. These

changes apart, he was quite startled to

find changes in his mood too. He felt an

unusual surge of energy within him, he

wanted to jump around and play. He

wished to climb tall trees and swing

around like monkeys. It was then that the

words re-echoed in his ears: Tomorrow

morning you will be as young as your son.

He rushed to his son to check for a

change in him. Sure enough, there he saw

Sushil immersed in a deep sleep. Subal,

not able to withstand the sleepy Sushi,

woke him up. His dress had grown

extremely light and body had become

strongly bloated. What more, nearly half

of his face was covered with a salt-and-

pepper beard and moustache, with just a

little trace of the unruly hair that had

covered his head earlier. An old and

matured man is what replaced the young

and naughty Subal.

Page 8: September 2014 price

Comical and fascinating as it may

seem, you’d also be surprised to find

that these were exactly what they had

got exactly what they had wished for.

While the father had wished to be young

once again to lock himself in a room and

study, the young Sushil could not wait to

grow older. He wanted the freedom of

the old age. Surprisingly, the Goddess of

Wish paid heed to their wishes and

granted them.

It would not be untrue to say that this

exchange of ages had in fact instilled a

degree of laziness to study in Subal and

an irritation to loud noises in Sushil.

The now father Sushil is forced to go to

school and now of the old tricks of

‘stomach ache, tooth ache’ would not

work out because the old Subal-well

aware of the antics he had experimented

till the previous night-would force him

to school. Though Sushil suffers from

cramps and pains sometimes, he is quite

content with this transition. Subal is also

quite hopeful he’d be able to overcome

his laziness and get ready to hit the

books soon as he wished for earlier and

succeed in being a civil officer of the

highest ranks.Days to come would sure

have more stories to be told and let us

wish them good luck.

A journey through the seemingly veiled

realities of King -Duncan’s death:

As is usual with the unexpected death of any

ruler, King Duncan’s death too seems to

be surrounded with doubts and

suspicions. And Wings of Wishes makes

an attempt to reflect these doubts, which

have taken course in the public mindset.

Chamberlains were the first suspects.

However, medical reports testify that

they were intoxicated by alcoholic

beverages and were in a state of

consciousness state at the line of death.

That being the case, how can they be the

assassins?

Secondly, gossips have arisen from various

corners on their way back from the

victorious feat met three witches who had

predicted Macbeth to be hailed as the

King. Also intelligence sources suspect

that Macbeth might have tries tried to

realize the predictions hurriedly. All the

while, banquo’s disinterested attitude to

these events was notable.

The fact that the death took place at

Macbeth’s castle also does cast shadow

of guilt over Macbeth, in primary stages

of investigation.

King Duncan’s sons Malcolm and

Donalbain disappeared, even without

participating in their father’s funeral

rites. This has been interpreted by

political critics as a factor reinforcing

certain allegations. These Crown Princes

are not known to have any apparent foes.

Banquo’s death immediately after the

assassination of the king too point fingers of

accusation at Macbeth. After the final

meeting of Banquo and Macbeth, former was

on a journey with his son. It was then that

Banquo was killed. That the later

whereabouts of his son still remain unknown

also have to be taken into account.

Quilling isn't nearly as complicated as you

might think... after a bit of practice it

becomes very relaxing to do, just like

knitting or crocheting. Try these simple

steps and give a try now itself.

Make a ring coil: Roll a 2 inch strip on a

paper piercing tool or cocktail stick. Glue

end and slide coil off tool. (make 2) A jump

ring and earring wire will need to slide

through the ring coil so be sure it's large

enough to accommodate the two wires.

Make a domed tight coil: Roll a 2 inch strip

on quilling tool of choice. Glue end in place

without allowing strip to loosen. Slide coil

off tool.

Press against one side of coil with a T-pin or

ball head pin to create a dome.

Page 11: September 2014 price

Apply a tiny amount of glue inside the

dome to preserve the curve.(make 4)

Note: for ring coils and tight coils, work

with strips that have a torn end. A torn

end will glue more smoothly than a sharp

cut and the coil will appear perfectly

round.

Pinch a sharp point at each end. Glue

end in place and trim excess paper.

Hold coil at points and gently compress

them toward one another all the way to

the center. When the coil is released, the

inner coils will spin around .

. Assemble components: Glue coils

together to make earrings as shown.

Allow glue to dry for a few minutes, turn

earrings over, and apply reinforcing dots

of glue to all join spots with the tip of a

pin.

Allow glue to dry overnight.

The next day, slide an opened jump ring

through each ring coil and slip on an

earring wire. Close jump ring, wear, and

receive compliments - no one will believe

your golden earrings are made of paper!
