Hope that everyone had a good summer and that you are ready to get back to those activities and friends that are so important to you. While the Centre was closed, West Shore Parks & Recreation were very busy cleaning, painting, repairing etc. as they usually do every summer. We do thank them for the great job that they do. Our kitchen renovations are just underway, with hope of having everything completed by Labor Day weekend. The kitchen is the heart of our Seniors’ Centre and these renovations will go a long way in improving the working conditions for those amazing volunteers that work in the kitchen on a regular basis. A Leaders Meeting is taking place 10:00 am, Tuesday, the 18th of September in the lounge. Let's get the year off to a good start by having all leaders attend! Our Board of Directors is looking forward once again to another interesting and productive time ahead. Important decisions that affect you and your activities are made every month at our General Meetings. The best way that you can support our Seniors’ Centre is by attending each and every one of those meetings! Roger Ritchot, President KITCHEN After a well-deserved summer break for our Kitchen volunteers, our Kitchen is open September 4th to once again serve delicious lunches and food for special events. JUAN DE FUCA SINGERS

I’m sure most Centre members have actually heard, or heard of, our Juan de Fuca Singers. For those new to the Centre or others not too familiar with us and what we do, read on.

Our singing group consists of twenty-some singers. Included in our group are our two accomplished piano accompanists, Pat Copp and Janet Trotter. A disparate group such as ours needs a firm hand to keep us attending to business and as such we are most fortunate to have Madeline Andrews as our director, or as our MC, Brian Leah refers to her; “she who must be obeyed”.

The first Monday of every month is our rehearsal time, when we familiarize ourselves with the new musical pieces that are chosen by Pat and Madeline or polish up some of our old favorites.

Starting the middle of September we will be taking the show on the road each remaining Monday afternoon to various senior’s facilities and hospitals in our area. The old saying is “music is good for the soul”, but it has also been proven to be good for the body and the memory as well. This is the reason why we are enthusiastically received in the venues we visit. Audience participation is encouraged as we give voice to the songs that bring back memories and evoke smiles.

Brian keeps our audiences attentive and chuckling with his off-beat sense of humour. This coming season Marilyn Elbourne will be sharing MC duties. Marilyn’s many friends at the Centre who are familiar with her ready smile will understand why everyone who meets her will be completely charmed! Always a special addition to our program is Anne Appleton’s contribution of seasonally appropriate poems or funny stories.

While our group are for the most part enthusiastic amateurs, we were fortunate to have a particularly talented lady join our singers recently. Joyce Corbyn is a great addition to our ranks. Her forte is to take a familiar song and fit it up with absolutely outrageously funny lyrics! This lady could demand a serious admission fee for her performance alone! As the admission for our program is only a Loonie, which includes a cup of tea and sweets, this is a wonderful bargain!

For all of those familiar faces who always come out to our performances of a Thursday afternoon, thanks so much for your ongoing support. To those whom we have yet to entertain, check out your Expressions for the date of our next concert. You’ll be glad you did!

BABY HATS

While on holidays, I delivered 168 baby hats to Campbell River Hospital. They were very much appreciated by them. We also sent 30 to Golden hospital with Marilyn Fuller’s son, Glenn. Now is the time to start on our purple ones for the end of November for our Shaken Babies. I have some purple wool. These hats have to be 50% purple.

Also, if anyone has any spare wool for these hats, please leave in the office with my name on the bag. Thanking you in advance.

NEW FLAG POLE AND FLAG INSTALLED

A Canadian Flag was proudly raised on our new and beautiful long awaited flag pole on Wednesday, the 25th of July, 2018. As President, I had the honor of raising "The Flag" for the very first time. Thank you to those members present at that time that joined me while the flag was going up to sing all together, "Oh Canada".

PAPER TOLE Friday, 12:30 to 3:00 pm

Paper Tole is a very old art form. It is a form of paper sculpture where many copies of a picture are using an exacto knife, shaped and coloured to create a 3-dimensional picture. Paper tole pictures can be used as framed art or made into cards. We have a fun group meeting on Friday afternoons, and we welcome anyone who would like to drop in and try out the craft. It does not require a lot of tools or space to create beautiful works of art.

For more information, contact Marg Eagle at [email protected]

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE 2018

Welcome to all new members – you’re going to love it here. And for us oldtimers, it’s wonderful to get back into regular activities and events after a summer away. We all miss the exercise, for both body and the little grey cells, not to mention the good company these activities provide.

But now is the time for me to collect items for prizes for our annual Christmas Raffle. Also, I’m looking for new ideas to make this an even more successful year than 2017!

Just let me know if you have either items or ideas as soon as you can, so the gaming license and raffle tickets can be ordered well before the actual raffle in December. If you do have something, please contact me, and do not leave anything at the Reception Desk. This raffle raises funds to help keep our Center running the classes and services that all members need and enjoy, so please help if you can.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

Just a reminder. Please take all personal property home with you when you leave the Centre. SCENT-FREE

A gentle reminder that our Centre is a “Scent-Free” zone. Many of our members are allergic to some of the ingredients in various perfumes, body lotions, hair products, aftershave products, laundry products, etc. Some of these members have had to leave a class and/or the Centre because another member is wearing a strong-scented product. Please consider your fellow members and abstain from using these products while at our Centre.

Back to Work - Calling all Leaders! Show & Tell Activity Fair

It is the start of a new year at the Centre. As in past years, the Entertainment Committee has set aside a Thursday afternoon to showcase as many of the activities that happen in our Centre as we can. In order to do this we must have the co-operation of the leaders. This year we are calling the event SHOW & TELL and it is scheduled for September 27th, at 1:00 pm. Please let us know if your group will participate so we can reserve you a table. Even if your class is full you can have a waiting list for interested members to sign for future classes. We would like some classes to do a short demo (max. 5 minutes if on stage) or display the finished product of what you do in your class. Our new and faithful members are always interested in the wonderful things that go on in our Centre. Leave a short note in the entertainment file at the front office, e-mail Ruth Reynolds at

[email protected] or call Ruth at 250-388-9089 so your table will be waiting for you on

September 27th.

Welcome to bring family and friends

WRITING YOUR STORY

Have you ever thought you’d like to write down your story for your family and future generations? Perhaps you’ve hesitated, thinking, “I’m not a writer” or “ I don’t have any computer skills.” This is a class that will teach you a new and easy way to write autobiographical information for others to read. The only tools you need is a pencil (although, for those with laptops, bring them along), and a supply of memories. Using a themed approach, the focus is on producing “readable” interesting stories that will give others a glimpse into your life and times.

At the end of the 10-week course, you will have created a small book featuring your memories, and you will have the resources and information to continue to add further chapters to the book if you wish.

Instructor: Pat Wilson Starting Monday, September 10th Time: 10:00 am to 12 noon Location: Small Craft Room Sign up at Reception. Space is limited.

Pat is a prolific author with over a dozen autobiographical books published over the past 25 years by The U.M. Press. As well, she has co-authored mystery books and humorous books. She has also written learning manuals and How-To books for corporate use, as well as numerous articles and fiction pieces for national magazines. Pat has been an instructor for many years, teaching classes in many different forms of writing, in personal self-development and in business skills.

Our Members Giving The Gift of Time by Volunteer Services

This 2018/19 year’s coordination of the Centre’s activities will be focused on each member ‘Giving the Gift of Time’.

The Executive, Board Members, Team Leaders, Instructors, and all our Community members, in fact, all the services/programs are run by our members giving their Gift of Time so our membership can flourish and be prosperous.

Our programs and services are a great success! Our Centre offers over 90 activities, all run by our members giving their Gift of Time. Each and every member can be involved by offering a couple hours a week, assist at special events, join the Food Services group or drive the bus. You are what makes our Centre thrive.

So, with the sign-up for 2018/19, a Gift of Time form will be offered to all the members to filled in to reflect how our members can be more involved with our programs. One of our dedicated members will be in touch with you soon.

There are a variety of ways to be involved, either daily, weekly or monthly. There are lots of alternative ways to be involved - as little as a one time event or add your name to the call-out list with your preferences of place, time, or event. Our new email address is [email protected] Just contact Volunteer Services for more information.

There are hundreds of ways to get to know our members. Our members giving the gift of time are inviting all our membership to assist in Food Services, Membership Services, Fundraising activities or if you can be a Driver for our Let’s Do It Trips. Or even better, have our members organize their program to contribute the gift of time as a group, once a year, towards a one time entertainment or special event.

Did you Know? All your membership fees go to maintaining the JDF Senior’s Centre’s facilities? This is why our members are so important to the Centre. Everyone of our services is offered to our membership by and for our members. Food Services is a great example. Food Services can offer extra opportunities for our special events, entertainment events, craft sales, also giving support to our monthly dinner events and most importantly to be able to offer a daily meal to our members whom may otherwise not be able to cook a meal for themselves. Members helping members.

I am Shirley Christina and have been a member with the Centre since 2016. I joined to be involved with the evening dance classes, dinner dances and over time became a driver for the Centre’s outings. Recently I’ve been recruited to give my Gift of Time to assist our membership in becoming more involved with the activities the Centre provides. My profession of over 20 years has been in the Management of Volunteers. I have set up computer systems, organized events, fundraising, recruitment, trained people of all ages to give their gift of time for organizations as Victoria Hospice, UNICEF, The Land Conservancy of BC, Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre, the Latin Caribbean Festival, FolkFest, the Boys and Girls Club of Victoria, Esquimalt Wellness Centre for Seniors and Kaleidoscope Theatre. BRIDGE LESSONS – 2018/19 This year we will be offering two full classes on playing Bridge. The original Beginner Bridge will cover the 10 Lessons in Shirley Silverman’s ‘5 Card Major’. For the most part these lessons will prepare the student for playing in the social bridge games at the Center. It is quite normal for students to take this course three or more times before it all ‘sinks-in’. The new Intermediate Bridge Lessons (also Silverman) will build on the Beginner Lessons for those students who want to develop their bidding and play (usually with a specific partner). The students must have a good grasp of bidding and responding using the 5-Card Major and NoTrump as we will be expanding on those protocols using forcing raises and Stayman. The Lessons will start on Thursdays starting on September 27. The Beginners are at 10:00 am and the Intermediates are at 12:30 – both in the large Lounge. Hugh Robertson 250-391-7687

OCTOBER TRIVIA NITE AND DINNER, OCT. 6TH, 2018. We will be holding another Trivia Nite, on Saturday, Oct. 6th. This is the Saturday of the Thanksgiving Day weekend. Play will start at 4 pm with our Trivia guru, John Stonehouse, attempting to stump us again with his vast array of subjects. There will be a one hour dinner break starting at approx. 5:30, menu to be decided. We’ll play another few rounds after dinner, and should wrap up between 7:30 and 8 pm. The bar will be open and there will be cash prizes. This event is open to members and guests, so feel free to bring your “know it all” friends and family. Tickets are now on sale, a great deal for $10! Kathy Robertson

PAINT PARTY AT THE CENTRE, OCT. 20TH, 2018. A brand new event is coming to the Centre this fall. The Special Events Committee will be holding a Paint Party on Saturday, Oct. 20th at 7 pm. Paint Parties have become very popular in the past couple of year at bars and restaurants, so we have decided to have one here at the Centre. Our leader will be Corinne Marley, who has previously worked here. Everything is provided for you, including directions and demonstrations by Corinne. It is not a paint by number tho, so every participant will come out with their own unique creation. It’s all about the fun, so if you feel you need to go off script then have at it. It’s a free space with no judgement. Just because we’re adults doesn’t mean we won’t get messy, tho. Corrine supplies paint shirts to help keep your duds paint free. Light refreshments will be provided. Tickets go on sale Monday, September 10th and cost $35 each. Kathy Robertson

BOTTLE REFILLING MACHINE

Thank you all for using the bottle refilling machine in the auditorium. Please remember to bring your refillable bottle with you. We have dispensed enough water for thousands of bottles since the machine was installed last summer. There is a bottle counter at the top of the machine. Sadly, I would estimate about half of these were into disposable cups for the landfill. Not only is this ecologically irresponsible (in my opinion) it is costly for the Centre.

Mark your name on your bottle. Should you become separated, we will attempt to reunite you and your bottle.

Thank you for caring about our planet. Ruth Reynolds

KREATIVE KRAFTS NEEDS YOUR HELP

We meet every Tuesday from 12:30-3:00 pm. Our main focus is to laugh. And secondly to make crafts for sale. We turn all our proceeds into the Centre. We knit, sew and make general crafts. We are in need of new members hopefully with new ideas. We try to do things that will sell!

We can always use supplies as well. Top of our list is handcrafter yarn for dishcloths. The knitters are on the lookout for bright coloured yarn for slippers, hats, children’s sweaters etc. The sewers can always use cotton fabric, ideas, and batting. We try not to compete with the quilters; our wares tend to be less complicated than their things

If you have supplies to donate, Tuesday afternoon is best. If we can’t use it, we will find someone who can.

Oh, we will supply yarn or fabric if you prefer to work alone! Now how can you refuse. Hope to see you at class!
