I try to write and speak openly and from the heart. I wrote a bulletin article in such a manner about “uncertainty,” “change,” risk,” and “courage.” However, I was advised (not by someone at JJC) to not give something so raw and emotional. Instead I am presenting words from Rabbi Mark Angel, Rabbi Emeritus of the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue, which I think are extremely relevant for today.

For those who prefer something personal, you are welcome to speak with me at any time. My door is always open.

Rabbi Angel writes: In his essay, “The Messianic Idea in Judaism,” Professor Gershom Scholem points to three tendencies within the spiritual life of the Jewish people.

The “conservative” element stresses the need to maintain things as they’ve always been. It is manifested in a deep commitment to Jewish law and custom; it focuses on detail and ritual. This tendency wants to ensure stability and continuity. It worries that any change in the system can lead to the unraveling of the entire structure.

The “restorative” element longs for the “gold old days”. It wants to renew our days as of old, to reestablish the kingdom of King David, to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. It’s underlying thought is that the greatest eras and personalities are in the past, and that our wish is to return to a past “Golden Age.”

The “utopian” element longs for a messianic era. It is characterized by spiritual restlessness and idealistic fervor. It contains within it bubbling emotions, and can be creative, nerve-wracking, even painful. It calls on us to change our focus from the safety of the past to the uncertainty of the future.

Throughout the Jewish history, these three elements have reflected themselves in our religious lives. In some eras, one element has

predominated; in other eras, another element has predominated. But all three have always been with us to some degree. The challenge is to balance the claims of all three tendencies, and to develop a Jewish life that draws on the strengths of each. The “conservative” element maintains the religious structure of our daily lives. Without adherence to halakha on a regular basis, Judaism is sapped of its influence on our lives. It becomes a nostalgic pastime to be experienced on special occasions. It becomes a matter of personal preference rather than a commitment to a divinely ordained way of life. Without the “conservative” element, Judaism becomes watered down to such a degree as to lose its real spiritual power.

The “restorative” element reminds us that we indeed did enjoy “golden ages” and we did indeed produce great personalities. While we in fact do not want to return to the past, yet we can derive tremendous inspiration from the great events and personalities of Jewish history. If we can restore the best elements of our past, this can be a boon to us and to the future of our people.

The “utopian” element reminds us to focus on the future. Without the idealism and hopefulness of utopianism, we risk becoming mired in the past. This tendency keeps us focused on developing new ideas, new ways of approaching an imperfect world, new aspirations for improving society…

Judaism that is based primarily on the “conservative” tendency becomes dry and over-ritualized. Judaism that is based primarily on the “restorative” element becomes quixotic and irrelevant. Judaism that is based primarily on the “utopian” element becomes deracinated, flailing out in various directions while disconnecting itself from the wellsprings of Jewish tradition.

In truth, we need all three elements and we need to balance them wisely. This was true of the Jewish past. It is true for the Jewish present. It is the foundation of the Jewish future. 5

A New Year’s Message

Dear Congregants,

As we mark the change in the calendar with shorter days and cooler evenings, it is again time to reflect upon the goodness and generosity of the members of the Jericho Jewish Center, without whom we couldn’t survive.

So many of you are benefactors to our synagogue. We extend to each of you our sincerest thanks and gratitude for your contributions. There are so many activities in which our benefactors enrich our synagogue, whether organizing the golf outing, practicing and participating in the Town of Oyster Bay triathlon or soliciting merchandise and volunteers for the Tag Sale. Others take the initiative by leading services, overseeing programs for our children and making sure our building is safe and secure. Then there are multitudes who quietly and with minimal recognition perform so many thankless tasks that allow the Jericho Jewish Center to flourish.

Although volunteers are vitally important to the well-being of our synagogue, we also require your financial support to enhance your experiences at the Jericho Jewish Center. I was touched to see that so many of you increased your voluntary contributions to our synagogue over the last several years while others who may not have been able to contribute before were able to contribute to our recent appeals. You are all to be commended and thanked.

Our synagogue is doing amazing things: encouraging community connections, creating connections to Israel for both adults and our religious school children, creating a forum to discuss controversial topics, providing a place for celebration and creating future leaders. With your generous contributions, there is even more we can to do.

There are many truly important charities that call upon us to do good things. They are all

consequential. Please know how honored we are when you choose to make a gift to our synagogue. With your financial contributions, you help to continue your legacy to the Jericho Jewish Center.

We thank you in advance for your generosity in this tangible demonstration, for your commitment to our synagogue, and for being role models to teach your children the importance of tzedakah.

If you are interested in endowing a program or in a naming opportunity in our synagogue, please feel free to contact me.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and officers of the Jericho Jewish Center, we wish you and your family a healthy, sweet and prosperous new year.

With appreciation, Richard Cepler

Amy Kahane,

Educat ion Director

Welcome back! I hope you had an enjoyable, relaxing and well-deserved vacation this summer. I look forward to seeing and greeting each of you on opening day of Religious School on Tuesday, September 4th.

Our faculty has been working diligently to prepare for an engaging and stimulating school year. This year, we welcome Noa Tamir, our Shinshin, from Israel. She is a recent high school graduate and is taking a gap year before joining the Israeli army. Noa will bring Israel to life in our classrooms on a weekly basis. Please plan to stay after pick up on opening day, September 4th for our annual Welcome Back BBQ on the Patio at 6:30 pm. Our BBQ is sponsored by jakes! Men’s Club. All are welcome and invited!! My experience in Jewish education is that children favor the experience of infusing Judaism into their daily lives while learning about it. The efforts of a strong and dedicated faculty along with sincere and dedicated families who engage and connect with the school and synagogue life are the foundation for success. I trust that you will continue to commit yourselves to being active participants as we strive to engage your children in regular class attendance, Shabbat-in shul school, Shabbat Alive, Friday Night Live and, extracurricular programs and family workshop opportunities.

Some exciting upcoming events in September: Friday September 7 - Friday Night Live dinner at 6:45 pm, followed by services at 7:45 pm Sunday, September 16 - Tashlich at Teddy Roosevelt Beach at 11:30 am Sunday, September 23 - Sukkot Family Program 4:00-6:00 pm, followed by Sangria in the Sukkah and Dinner From my family to yours, we wish you and your loved ones a very Happy, Healthy New Year. B’Shalom, Amy Kahane

"And remember, also, that many places you would like to see are just off the map and many things

you want to know are just out of sight or a little beyond your reach. But someday you'll reach them

all, for what you learn today, for no reason at all, will help you discover all the wonderful secrets of

tomorrow." Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! As I anticipate the beginning of the school year, I look

forward to the children that we will soon meet and get to know over the upcoming year. I remember

my first day of school as a child and the mix of excited anticipation and fear that I felt. I also

remember the first day of school for each of my children and I remember, again, the mix of

anticipation and fear that I felt for them—perhaps I was more nervous than they! I say this because

I want you to know that we understand. Each one of our teachers is a parent. We all know the fears,

the hopes, the problems, and the joys of parenting. Yet we are also Early Childhood Educators. We

understand, perhaps better than most, how very important the task of educating the young child is.

We want for your children a true education, because we know that education is not just what a child

learns from reading a book (although much can be learned from reading!) or from memorizing

letters, numbers, shapes, and facts. Education is what happens when one discovers meaningful

information through experience. Here at Jericho STEM we hope to provide an environment rich in a

variety of meaningful and exciting materials and experiences so that your child can explore,

discover and absorb through our STEM activities. Remember what your child learns today will help

to discover “all the wonderful secrets of tomorrow.”

Mitzvah 613: Writing a Sefer Torah

“And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it into their mouths, in order that this song will be for Me as a witness for the children of Israel.” (Deuteronomy 31:19). While this is referring to the song of Haazinu near the end of the Torah, The Talmud (Nedarim 38a) has taken this to refer to the commandment for every Jew to write his/her own Sefer Torah (Torah scroll).

It is a special skill to write a Torah, and it takes on average a year to do so. As many of us have other vocations, how then can we fulfill this command? According to Rabbi Moses Isserles (the Rema), we fulfill it by writing at least one letter in the Torah (Yoreh Deah 270:1 based off Menachot 30a).

During the 2018-19 synagogue year, each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this Mitzvah, thanks to the generosity of Neil and Sherry Cohen. Neil’s parents, Norman and Harriet z”l were members of the Jericho Jewish Center for almost 60 years. When Norman z”l passed away last year, Neil and Sherry sought to honor him through a gift to his spiritual home, the Jericho Jewish Center. Their generosity enables us to acquire a new Torah at JJC, a welcome addition, as most of our Torot are heavy and a number of them are pasul (unfit for ritual use). Each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this commandment by donating for a letter, a word or a more substantial gift to be given in memory of a loved one or in honor of a simcha. All donors will receive a certificate of appreciation for their donation, will get to write a letter in the Torah and will have a photo taken with the scribe as this is done.

Please send your gift in to the Jericho Jewish Center and indicate that it is for the Mitzvah 613 Torah campaign. Also please inform your family and friends, inviting them to contribute to our new Torah. Let us know if you are interested in participating in our Mitzvah 613 committee: we are looking for creative minds to plan educational programs around the Torah. Lastly, please indicate if it is in honor of a simcha or in memory of a

loved one so that we can acknowledge it appropriately. You can donate online: www.jerichojc.com/mitzvah613/

mitzvah!!

Our annual Israel Bonds breakfast on August 19, was a huge success. An unprecedented number of people attended and I was told by Arnie Schweitzer, our Israel Bonds rep. that a great number of bonds were purchased. I will know more next month.

As you all know, we always honor congregants that support Israel as well as our temple. This year's honorees, Gloria and jake! Jacobson, fit right into that category. The speaker, UK born, Sgt. Benjamin Anthony, got a well deserved standing ovation. One of the very best we've heard, as he gave a concise report not only of his activities in the IDF but of the political situation in Israel and what the country is facing with its neighbors who want to destroy it. If you were unable to attend, please do buy a bond. Call our rep. Arnie Schweitzer on his direct line 212-446-5858.

And on another note, Gloria and I would like to thank Evelyn Rubin and the Israel Bonds Committee for bestowing the Israel Bonds Breakfast honor on us. Thanks to all our friends, both in and out of JJC who came to a phenomenal event. Everyone showed such fantastic support for Israel. VIVA ISRAEL! And I say from the bottom of my heart - from me and my family to you and yours, have a happy and healthy new year and may you be written and sealed in the book of life. YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT!!!
