AND TERM 3 … THAT IS A “WRAP”! Congratulations to all our students for their learning achievements and contributions to our school in Term 3, which whilst still a different time, our students demonstrated amazing progress, talents and resilience including a magnificent celebration of our students and staff during Education Week in Week 3! Please see the next page where I invite parents to share in our 2021-2024 School Improvement Plan feedback. There will be an opportunity to participate in an on-line survey early in Term 4 as well as a ZOOM meeting on October 28. Your feedback and ideas are so important as we continue to build capacity and improvement for every member of Northmead Public School – students, staff and our whole community! We look forward to sharing the exciting ideas from every member of our community towards making Northmead a lighthouse of innovation and inspiration in learning and life outcomes! Have a very happy, safe and enjoyable Spring holiday! We look forward from October 12, to a spectacularly special final term for 2020! KINDERGARTEN FOR 2021? TIME TO ENROL! If you are in our school’s catchment area, or you know people in our area with children eligible to commence school in Term 1 2021 please contact the office for enrolment forms which are also now available online with the relevant information for parents available via this link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/parents-and-carers/online-enrolment-for-nsw-public-schools/online-enrolment-for-parents We are collating our 2021 Kindergarten Orientation Information Packs for families as well as resource packs for students starting at Northmead P.S. in 2021. Mrs Baumann, Mrs Taylor and the 2020 Kindergarten team are putting together an exciting and informative website to provide information and videos to support our parents and students through a “virtual” Kindergarten Orientation experience – stay tuned for the link which will be sent via emails.

FORWARD PLANNING FOR 2021 We are already planning for 2021 classes and in order for us to be up-to-date with enrolments and staffing, we ask that families with students in K-Y5 who already know they will not be returning in 2021 to inform the school via phone call or email as soon as possible. Class placement is an important and complex task which the school invests a lot of time and planning in. Parents/carers are welcome to provide written information by letter or emailing the school [email protected] - with attention to the principal Mrs Ezzy by Friday 6 November, 2020 should there be specific considerations or information about your child/children you would like the school to be aware of when forming 2021 class placements. These may include social and emotional needs, academic ability, behaviour and past relationship issues that you feel have impacted your child/children. There are no guarantees all considerations can be implemented, but please be assured that the Executive, the staff and I always plan classes with the best educational and wellbeing outcomes at the forefront of determining class placements for every student. Parent requests for changes of their child’s class will not be considered in 2021 as this is a school management decision and we commit considerable time in formulating the structure for the following year. Thank you for your understanding .

SCHOOL EXCELLENCE IN ACTION – SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN 2021-24 The school is in the process of undertaking a Situational Analysis of the learning, teaching and leading data available in the school, to inform the next four year planning cycle for School Excellence. This involves reviewing the 2018-2020 School Plan, the school vision and how our data and evidence of improvement or areas for improvement will inform our three (3) Strategic Directions in the new School Improvement Plan. In Week 3 of Term 4 (26-30 October), parents/carers will be given the opportunity to log into an on-line

survey (which we will endeavour to provide QR codes for easy access); providing feedback on questions around planning for and achieving school excellence for Northmead P.S.;

on October 28, which is the Wednesday after the next P&C Zoom Meeting, parents/carers will be given the opportunity to join a Zoom Meeting from 7-7:45pm where the school will outline the new School Planning Cycle and Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP) for the next four year cycle (2021-2024) and seek feedback on our shared journey to school improvement;

you will be asked to register for this October 28 ZOOM meeting in Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4, so we have an idea of numbers joining us and can provide “break-out rooms” via Zoom, for smaller discussions, facilitated by member of the school executive;

prior to the Zoom Meeting, you will also be provided with a series of questions based on the World Café methodology, which is a simple and effective format for hosting larger group dialogue.

Community consultation is an integral part of the school evaluating what its three Strategic Directions will be detailing the initiatives to improve learning, teaching and leading for our students, staff and community. Strategic Direction 1 will be the same for every school: Student growth and attainment. We look forward to these community consultation opportunities for our ongoing improvement as a school.

TERM 4 GUIDELINES – COVID-19 As yet principals have not received amendments to the current Term 3 school operational guidelines. As soon as the Term 4 updated guidelines are communicated from the Department I will share these with our community, including restrictions for events currently “on hold” (such as assemblies, presentation days, kindergarten orientation etc.). All current restrictions to the school site including drop-off/pick-up gate arrangements and no access to the school for volunteers or external operators, will remain in place on our return in Term 4. As we head towards the final term of a “different” 2020, I am reminded of a favourite quote from the beloved and respected author, C.S. Lewis which reminds us why change and always seeking our personal best is as necessary as the grass growing or the seasons changing . This has certainly been the year of 2020 where changing how we do things certainly may not have been easy, but by adapting, rethinking and reimagining aspects of our lives, it has led to innovation, inspiring stories and even better ways of achieving the goals we wish for:

"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg.

We are like eggs are present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary decent egg.

We must be hatched or go bad”. C.S. Lewis

I look forward to chatting with you all once more in Term 4 in the next Northmead Newsbreak … … Anne Ezzy (Principal)

Kindergarten News Early Stage 1

It is hard to believe a whole term has flown by! In KL, we have continued to work really hard to be safe, respectful learners and to always be the best we can be! We have had a wonderful few weeks learning all about the farm in Kindergarten. We know lots of farm animals and what they need and have had a great time pretending to be farmers. A particular highlight for us was milking a cow in our classroom! We had to squeeze the udder to get the ‘milk’ out. It was very cool! We are all really excited for our visit from Kindifarm on our first day back next term! It will be great to share all we have learnt with the farmers and we are looking forward to learning more about our favourite farm animals. Have a wonderful holiday!

Stage Two News (Years 3 & 4)

Stage 2 have had a ‘hoot’ of a term with their teachers. They have been learning how to regulate their feelings by using strategies to make sure they are ‘good to go’ at school. S2P created pictures of ‘their’ perfect places they could think about when feeling unlike their happy self.

Have a safe and relaxing break from school.

Stage 3 News- 5H Edition

The Best Part of Me

After reading Wendy Ewald’s The Best Part of Me, Stage 3 had a go at writing their own

letters about their favourite part of themselves.

Zones of Regulation

Over the term, Stage 3 have been learning about the four different zones of regulation. Understanding which zone a certain thought or emotion is associated with helps the students to identify how

they are feeling and the many fluctuations that occur during the school

day.

Inside 5H

5H have just finished up our “Angles” unit. We were learning how to accurately

measure angles and how all angles cannot be bigger than 360O.

We also learned about complimentary and supplementary angles. Ask your child

what they are when they get home.

As our first full term for the year comes to an end, Stage 3 have been busy learning as much as they can before the holidays.

LeArning SUCCESS NEWS Last Wednesday was “World Play-Doh Day” and to celebrate, the Year 1 Phonics Groups made words out of play-doh, showing off their skills in word building and letter formation. These structured phonics groups have taught the “sounding out” skills that students need for reading success.

School Holidays are here! For many families, holidays will look a little different with the current travel restrictions. However, holidays are a chance to “recharge the batteries” and have a break in regular routines. Please take the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather and explore some of the beauty in our own local areas. The spring wildflowers are magnificent at the moment so take a stroll in a National Park, build sandcastles at the beach or play at the park. Enjoy time with your family and friends and get ready for Term 4.

Are we employing our students to paint the school??? No, our Year 1 students are painting their sight words on the wall with water. They loved it!!

Stage 2 EAL/D News Stage 2 students have been learning more

sophisticated and interesting words to use instead of ‘said’, when writing direct speech. They have

learnt to use and apply this vocabulary to express a character’s emotion.

Year 7 Selective High School 2022

Applications for selective high school placement for Year 7 in 2022 (students currently in Year 5) will open on 6 October 2020 and close on 9 November 2020.

On the next page is the Intention to Apply letter. Applications will soon be available but your intention to apply will give the school an indicator of the students that will require school assessment scores.

Thank you.

Intention to apply for Year 7 placement in a selective high school in 2022 Dear Parent/Carer Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, and by using specialised teaching methods. Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 11 March 2021.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2022, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available in late September 2020 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. The application website opens at that link on 6 October 2020 and closes on 9 November 2020. You must apply before the closing date. There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after 6 October 2020.

You must submit only ONE application for each student. The tear-off slip below is not an application and the school cannot apply on your behalf. Yours sincerely

Sun and UV at School

Sun and UV at School: Learning about skin cancer prevention

In the lead up to summer, students will learn about sun protection, and how to make healthy, safe and proactive choices that reduce their risk of skin cancer.

Statistics show that melanoma is the most common cancer affecting young Australians aged 15-24. With that in mind, we will be teaching students about the dangers of sun exposure and that skin cancer prevention starts with practising sun-safe behaviours at school.

This focus on sun safety follows the release of a suite of interactive skin cancer prevention resources for NSW schools. The Sun and UV at School classroom resources are curriculum aligned and have been developed by the Cancer Institute NSW in consultation with the NSW Department of Education, other education advisors and Cancer Council’s SunSmart program.

As part of the initiative, students will be encouraged to take part in a Sun and UV School Challenge, designing contemporary shade solutions that protect them, their friends and local community from the harmful effects of the sun. cancer.nsw.gov.au/sun-school

Sun and UV at School Challenge Launching Tues 15 Sept 2020

The Cancer Institute NSW’s Sun and UV at School Challenge is here! Ignite your students’ creativity and real-world problem-solving abilities! As part of the release of its new Sun and UV at School classroom resources, the Cancer Institute NSW has launched its Sun and UV at School Challenge for NSW schools. Separate primary and secondary school challenges encourage K-10 students to work individually or in groups, to solve real-world problems linked to skin cancer prevention. Primary school students will be encouraged to design and colour the ultimate sun safe playground, while secondary school students will be tasked with designing the ultimate urban shady space which protects themselves, their friends, and/or wider community from the harmful effects of the sun. Inquiry and project-based learning is at the core of this initiative. The challenge draws on the new classroom resources and the content, objectives, skills and outcomes of the aligned K-10 PDHPE and Science syllabuses. Entries for both challenges are open for six weeks, from Tuesday 15 September to Friday 23 October, with winners announced on Monday 16 November during National Skin Cancer Action Week 2020. There are cash prizes on offer for the winning students AND their school! More information and instructional materials can be downloaded from www.cancer.nsw.gov.au/sun-school
