To generate a large sum, 32 dedicated volunteers collected funds from Etobicoke, Mississauga, Toronto and Scarborough. Volunteers were assigned locations based on their residence. Funds were collected in creative ways by the volunteers:
Bake sales Door to door money collection Bake sale in community centres Unused new clothing to be sold off in community centres General Donations
DETAILS SH chose to work with Human Concern International. We chose to send the funds through HC due to their long term work.
HC’s commitment statements provide assurance of responsible use of the funds:
Funds donated are used for the particular recipient or location for which they are earmarked. Funds collected are sent promptly and directly to the affected areas. Avoid any foreign governmental involvement, “middle men” or organizations which could divert or
misuse funds and items donated for specific purposes. The practice of using volunteer services is encouraged. A lean administrative structure is maintained to keep the administration cost low. 100% of funds channeled for Projects and Programs More than $90 million channeled u31 years of Humanitarian Aid and Development Work Eligible for CIDA and other International Donor Organizations’ Funding Proven Accountability
HCI’s Work in Africa
HCI started working in the area, and has been successfully delivering aid to Somali Famine victim in Mogadishu, Afgoye and Shabeelle. At the Feeding Center, managed by Dr. Hawa Abdi, 900 individuals per day are receiving HCI's help. In a month a total of 27,000 people displaced by Drought and famine will be covered. In Mogadishu we are distributing monthly food packages. Beneficiaries receive approximately 15 pounds of culturally specific foods per household at a cost $150.
HCI's immediate relief package includes: Cooked Food through Food Kitchen and Dry Food Hampers. Food products include items that are familiar to beneficiaries and that they frequently use such as: tomatoes, pasta, tuna, flour, sugar, jasmine rice, and vegetable oil.
We have been working in Somalia and other parts on the Horn of Africa (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan) for the past 20 years.

MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM LEAD
Our dedicated team lead for the project was Saima Khan, her passion and enthusiasm to raise funds was remarkable and commendable:
First of all I would like to thank Serving Humanity for making it possible for us to carry out this project. Though it was a one-time project, there weren't many issues in terms of organization and co-ordination but could definitely have been better in that sense. A presentation was made in order to educate the students about the East African Drought as well as encourage them to participate in this cause. They were told about the envelopes available at the front of the building to place there donations in. These donations would then be handed over to the finance team to keep a count. They were also encouraged to bring in unused clothing and items of benefit in order to collect donations on campus. Our planning was done through the means of meetings. A major meeting took place at the beginning of the project. It was decided that certain areas of the GTA would come up with a creative way to collect donations. All groups were appointed a lead and a co-lead. Our largest group was that residing in Etobicoke. The volunteers took the initiative to bake goods and sell them at their local community centers. Another group from Mississauga, though only consisting of three students, were eager enough to take a walk around their block in order to create awareness to the reality of this drought and at the same time encourage others to donate and get them involved in the project as well. Volunteers also took on individual roles. Since this project took place in Ramadan, a volunteer made bookmarks with relevant prayers written on them and handed them out at her local religious institutions while collecting donations. Volunteers from Mississauga held a bake sale on the weekend at their local community center. A volunteer took on the individual role to sell all the food until all the goods were sold out. People were not only buying the baked goods but donating and those who did not want to buy donated anyway. Volunteers brought in many items to sell to raise funds. At the end of this enthusiastic project, we collected a total of $30 000 for long term aid in East Africa through Human Concern International. A percentage of the amount was also donated to Haiti Relief and Palestine. The project consisted of extensive team effort, planning, and most of all action. It aided in sowing the seeds for more projects in the future which we hope will take place as there is always a need.

OVERVIEW
Serving Humanity Food Bank began in August 2010 with the mission of providing food and support for all
people regardless of age, gender, religion, and social background. Serving Humanity Food Bank has partnered
with Muslim Food Assistance Programme in Etobicoke that provides for over a hundred families.
Serving Humanity also had the pleasure of working with Ernestine Women’s Shelter in Etobicoke by providing
food items. The Shelter houses approximately 60 women along with their children.
TIMELINE
Food bank pick-ups depend on the amount of food in the bins. Initially, when Serving Humanity Food Bank
began in August 2010, the pick-ups were every two weeks. However, the amount of food dropped off fluctuates
and often pick-ups are every four to six weeks. The last pick up for Serving Humanity Food Bank was on
September 30, 2011.
PROCESS
Our volunteer team consists of 3 full-time volunteers and the rest of our volunteers are sisters and children who
help when a food bank pick up is in progress.
First, all the volunteers unload the food bank bins onto mats and sort simultaneously into categories of items.
For example, a row of cereal, cans, pasta, etc.
Second, the volunteers check expiry of the food items.
Third, food items are logged in a diary and the general weight of the items is taken by the team lead.
Fourth, the volunteers bag all the food items and load the pick-up van, which arrives from the Muslim Food
Assistance Programme in Etobicoke.
