Our VisionHome. There’s really no place like it. And whether it’s building new structures or rehabbing existing houses, this year we’ve learned more than ever what counts is that we continue to provide decent, affordable homes for deserving families.

With our community leading the nation in foreclosures in 2009, Habitat for Humanity restructured its operations to make economical use of the housing plight. A new vision was cast for the immediate future of Habitat’s local ministry to extend the hand-up to neighborhoods suffering from abandonment by filling these empty homes with deserving families. This logic paved the way for Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide to absorb their local housing supply and make a positive impact

on the negative conditions.

And the gloom didn’t stop there. Statistics also showed this area contained one of the highest unemployment rates in the country; reaching more than 14%. These numbers sent Habitat for Humanity of Lee County spurring for another solution to ‘save’ hardworking homeowners who could soon fall prey to the cycle. This crisis sparked the creation of Habitat’s Maintenance Division. Miguel Velez was just one of several Habitat homeowners hired to do professional lawn care and cleaning in the community. An electrician by trade, Velez and his family of five had been paying on their Habitat mortgage for nearly five years. After seven years with his company, a job layoff forced Velez to find an alternative to paying his mortgage. “Bills don’t stop and I started to get scared with what could happen,” said Velez.

This year, Habitat for Humanity of Lee County was recognized as being in the top two percent of charities worldwide for fiscal responsibility.

Charity Navigator, the nations most utilized and recognized charity evaluator gave our chapter the highest degree of financial fitness allotted, for the seventh year in a row.

Today, more than a billion and a half people around the world continue to live in substandard and unaffordable housing with some 100 million left homeless. In FY2009, Habitat for Humanity served 72 families in Lee and Hendry County and marked a major milestone with our affiliate’s 1,000th home in early March. On top of this, we also raised another 40 rooftops in undeveloped nations in need; and yet, there is much work still to be done to eliminate the problem shadowing families everyday.

This year, the Habitat family lost two important faces in advocating the affordable housing cause; our founder Millard Fuller and Habitat board member Jack Kemp. Every day, we’re looking for new names and new champions to take on the advocacy of affordable housing.

Habitat’s mission is more than just building and refurbishing houses. It’s the partnership that happens with individuals, faith communities, corporations, non-profits, and other institutions. Together, this is what makes a house a home, and there’s really no place like it.

FocusingEvery partner famiy entering Habitat’s homeownership program is required to have an income sufficient enough to support Habitat’s zero-interest mortgage for less than a 30-year term. This is to ensure a family isn’t stuck paying for more house than they can afford.

According to the U.S. Census, more than half of all Florida renters spent over 30% of their income on housing in 2008. About 40% of all mortgage holders devoted at least a third of their income to house payments. Habitat’s monthly mortgage payments are set at less than 30% of the homeowner’s income; this is what the state of Florida considers affordable. Habitat homes are assigned to families based

on the desired neighborhood and availability.

Labelle

Maria is a grandmother of four and a mother of eight children. She picks tomatoes for a living while continuing to raise four of her eight children still living at home. When Maria came into Habitat’s program, she needed a larger, affordable space for her growing family. Her desire was to continue living in Hendry County. It took only weeks for Maria’s 250 sweat equity hours to be completed. At the dedication of her home, Maria’s family barbequed a feast under an outdoor tent for Habitat’s construction crew and volunteers who helped her dream of affordable

homeownership come true.

Suzanne, Aniel, 16, and Kishauna, 10 are the proud recipients of Habitat for Humanity of Lee County’s 1000th build. In March, the family was on site to help raise the walls on their four-bedroom home. Habitat built the milestone home in Labelle to raise awareness to the continued need for affordable housing in this community. Susanne is a manager for Handy Food Stores. At the dedication of her home, Suzanne’s boss came out to celebrate in the manager’s accomplishment. The build was also commemorated in the name of Habitat’s founder, Millard Fuller. Fuller passed away just weeks before the houseraising.

on Families

This year Habitat for Humanity housed a total of 83 children in Lee & Hendry Counties.

Cape Coral

Maria and her son have seen their share of struggles. By the time the two found Habitat, Maria says she and her son had moved from Colombia and lost all hope in human kindness. Her biggest concern was finding a safe place for her son to grow up in. Maria helps people day in and day out through her job at Hope Hospice, so when she came to Habitat and found others wanted to help her through the homeownership program, Maria says she found a new hope in God and mankind.

Susan and her two daughters moved from

Arizona a few years ago. While working at Lee Memorial Hospital, Susan says all she could afford is an apartment that had leaky windows and only one exit; the other exit was padlocked and no one can find the key. “My youngest daughter has so many scars from spider and insect bites due to a lack of extermination where we currently live,” Susan said, “but I don’t make enough to afford anything else.” Finding Habitat, Susan says she has started a new path for her life; she has a new house and is now studying to become a nurse.

Shannon came to Habitat for Humanity with great enthusiasm to begin a new life with her

two sons after a divorce left the single mom without decent, affordable housing for her children. She completed her sweat equity hours in Habitat’s thrift store and helped sell playhouse raffle tickets for Habitat’s Christmas fundraiser. While going through Habitat’s program, Shannon struggled through a custody battle and loss of income. With the help of her family, friends and faith, she pressed on and received the keys to her very own four-bedroom home. When Habitat told her how much her mortgage was going to be, she started jumping up and down and crying, and thanking God for Habitat and the support that helped her achieve her dream.

Families entering Habitat’s program in 2009 made an average salary of $26,239.79.

Become Reality

Bonita Springs

24-year old Refugio and her baby boy Carlos rented a room in a Bonita Springs house lived in by four other family members. Because of overcrowding, she started to scout out a place of her own. But during the economic spiral, her relatives lost their home and left the area; leaving Refugio and her son homeless. Although she worked for the Hyatt Regency Hotel, her monthly income couldn’t afford

a decent place for her and Carlos. When Refugio came to Habitat, she had a very clear dream; to become a homeowner and give her growing son some stability, space and a place of their own. She asked friends to help her with sweat equity hours and consequently, finished the program very quickly.

37-year old Sonia and her four children were renting a 3-bedroom house from a relative and paying $800/month. When the economy

put a pinch on her relatives, Sonia was faced with an ultimatum; move out or be kicked out because relatives were moving back in. Sonia heard about Habitat on t.v. By working in ER registration at Lee Memorial Hospital, she was able to afford a Habitat mortgage in Bonita Springs and today pays almost half of what she was paying on rent each month; that includes taxes and insurance!

Fort Myers

22-year old Jessica and 25-year old Issac have two four-year old boys and a three-year old girl. The family of five shared one bedroom in Issac’s mother’s house, which also housed two of Issac’s siblings. In return for the room, the couple paid the electric bill each month while looking for a house they could afford with enough bedrooms for everyone. A friend referred the couple to Habitat’s program. With Isaac’s landscaping income and Jessica’s work at a car rental service, the two found Habitat’s mortgage for a 4-bedroom home within reach.

Gabriel and Otilia, a young couple with a three-year old daughter and another child on the way, shared a one-bedroom trailer that was deteriorating quickly. The growing family of four needed more space, but something that would fit within their budget. After finding Habitat, Gabriel spent every Friday in

Habitat’s Thrift Store putting in sweat equity hours. In the midst of working toward their dream of homeownership, Gabriel lost his job, and the family’s dream started to fade. Habitat renewed that dream through the Habitat Maintenance Division. Gabriel was offered a temporary position while he searched for a new job. Today, the couple’s dream of homeownership is a reality.

25-year old Ashley and her two children; Jenissa, 7 and Dominick, 6 were living in an apartment with one simple wish, to be able to call a place home and have a yard to play in. Although Ashley worked full time as a housekeeper, her wages couldn’t afford more than their rent. That’s because Ashley’s daughter has a prosthetic leg, which creates costly medical bills. Today, Ashley’s monthly mortgage payment, plus insurance and taxes, is almost half of what she was paying for rent each month and she has a place to call home.

In 1998, Habitat built Beecher Village, a 73-house subdivision located off Veronica Shoemaker. While the homes filled up fast, over time vacancies have given other families a chance at a new life of homeownership. Christal has three children all under the age of 10, two of them with disabilities. Her biggest concern was having more space for the children’s medical equipment and a space where her kids could feel safe and she could become more independent as a single parent.

78-year old Genola made her final payment to Habitat this year and officially is the proud owner of a mortgage-free home. “This has been a dream to make that final payment,” she says. “I made sure my first payment every month was my mortgage and I didn’t worry about decorating or buying a bunch of things for my house until I had it paid off. Now, I’m planning to get a new roof after I pay off the furniture I just put on layaway.”

Lehigh Acres

Patricia is a bus driver for the Lee County School District. She and her two sons, Jonathan, 16 and Ethan, 3, have shared a

3-bedroom house with Patricia’s parents for the last two and a half years. “It’s hard with what I get paid to afford even food, let alone a place of our own,” she says. Patricia heard about Habitat from a co-worker who joined

Habitat’s program and became a homeowner on the school district’s income. Today, Patricia, Jonathan and Ethan each have their own bedroom in a Lehigh Acres home of their own.

Dear Sir or Madaam:My name is Shawnda. I am a wife and mother of five. I am in desperate need of a Habitat home due to the fact that my family and I currently have only one income in the household and the home that we are renting is currently in foreclosure. It’s very stressful as parents not knowing where your next home will be. Our family is too big to move in with family members while we save money to move. To come up with the first, last and security deposit to rent another home big enough for our family is impossible right now. We are praying that things will turn around soon so that we can have another income in the home. We are willing to do whatever necessary procedures to help our family have a secure home. Thank you.

Sincerely, Shawnda

Shawnda and Reginald and their five children found themselves caught in the middle of the foreclosure crisis and they didn’t even own a house! The couple was notified that the 3-bedroom house they had rented for almost 2 years was in the process of being foreclosed

upon. On top of that, Reginald was laid off from his job and the couple didn’t qualify for a conventional mortgage. A friend of the family had gone through Habitat’s homeownership program and recommended the organization. Because Shawnda was still working as an

office assistant, the family qualified for Habitat’s program. Today, Shawnda and Reginald pay a monthly mortgage (including taxes and insurance) equal to a third of their rent.

Refocusing Our Efforts

Habitat for Humanity of Lee County has been building houses in partnership with low-income families for almost 30 years. While more than 1,000 families have turned their homeownership dreams into a reality through Habitat, thousands are still paying more than half their income on housing; while hundreds more are being forced to live in substandard housing because prices are out of reach.

During Fall 2008 Southwest Florida home prices plummeted to a historical low. Habitat’s board of directors predicted the classic Habitat model of building single-family houses on infill lots would no longer fully address the community’s most urgent needs. Habitat began a shift in how the organization provided homes.

Habitat started to purchase vacant and foreclosed properties in the community, rehabbing the structures and placing families back in these empty homes. The new model took advantage of existing infrastructure and renew the neighborhoods where these houses stood.

Unemployment numbers started to climb as well. Board members predicted Habitat homeowners would not be exempt from layoffs. The group came up with a ‘maintenance division’ that employed current Habitat homeowners who had fallen victim to the economic downturn. Homeowners were temporarily employed part-time for six

months until they could find steady work. More than 30 homeowners took part in the program and were able to make their monthly mortgage payments to Habitat at a time when many banks and mortgage companies were closing their doors.

Within a year, Lee County had become a community devastated by escalating foreclosure rates and job losses. But because Habitat had already put into place practices for the future plight, we were able to absorb the shockwave with less impact than most.

Today, dozens of Habitat chapters around the country have adopted Lee County’s housing methods.

Habitat Founder

The first seeds of Habitat for Humanity were sown at Koinonia Farm, a Christian farming community. In 1965, financially successful Millard Fuller had made his living as an attorney and entrepreneur, but money couldn’t buy its way out of the troubles he was having in his marriage. The couple gave away everything they owned and decided to start over at Koinonia. While there, founder of the farming community, Clarence Jordan, asked Fuller for help in housing the workers on Koinonia’s plantation; families were too poor to qualify for conventional home loans. Built on the teachings of Jesus Christ, the two came up with partnership housing and built their first house in 1969 using this method.

The Fuller’s took the idea to Zaire. Within a few years, the simple concrete block homes replaced unhealthy mud-and-thatch homes.

It was a simple call to action that generated Millard’s vision for the future and has inspired millions to jump on board. Today, that one vision has spawned two international ministries, housing more than 1,500,000 people in 3,000 communities globally.

On February 3rd, at the age of 74, Millard unexpectedly passed away after a brief illness. While many mourned the loss of his leadership, hundreds celebrated the fullness of his life. Locally, Habitat for Humanity of Lee County dedicated it’s 1000th house in Millard’s honor and legacy.

Millard was once quoted as saying, “We know from experience that when we move on faith, God moves with us and by doing what we can, we make a difference.”

Between January 1 and December 31, 2009, Habitat’s average house price sale was $60,974.36

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Habitat. The construction sites are only one of the many ways individuals and groups get involved with our organization. Through Habitat’s thrift store, special events, bulk mailing, technical needs, committee activities, advocacy efforts and fundraisers, volunteers from all walks of life step up to the plate and give their talents selflessly.

Currently Habitat chapters collectively see more than 750,000 volunteers annually partnering around the globe. The goal is to raise that number to a million by the year 2013.

Habitat for Humanity was built on the foundation of local churches. So it comes as no surprise that some of Habitat’s most dedicated volunteers today stem from its cornerstone. For over a dozen years, Chapel by the Sea has consistantly volunteered on Habitat for Humanity work sites. In 2009, the

Fort Myers Beach group reported a total of 683 hours helping Habitat. In fact, 94-year old Alex Brown, a member of Chapel by the Sea, was a part of Habitat’s building efforts in the early days.

This group not only supports Habitat on the jobsite, but also financially. Every Christmas, the church holds a fundraiser that nets about $800 for Habitat’s cause. Chapel by the Sea volunteers say they volunteer because it feels good to help others. “We love helping those in need and feel a real Christian satisfaction from it,” says Ron Buss, Chapel By The Sea crew leader. “It also helps,” he says, “that the entire group enjoys each other’s company and the camaraderie.”

First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs is another congregation with consistant volunteerism on Habitat’s build sites. In 2008, a group of five men from this church recorded over 450 hours for the year.

Summit Church provided over 100 ‘nail pounders’ in April 2009 to raise the walls of four homes in Labelle. This equates to 714 volunteer hours on a single day! It was a significant accomplishment for both the South Fort Myers church and Habitat for Humanity of Lee County.

Habitat challenged local churches to an inter-faith build in February. Ten congregations answered the call, with more than seventy volunteers on site. Walls and trusses were raised by the end of the day for two partner families in Lehigh Acres. Even more volunteers took part in the build by providing lunch for the group of builders.

A Heart

of Volunteerism

Lee County Habitat volunteers logged a total of 150,000 hours of service in 2009.

Southwest Florida has the privilege of welcoming thousands of northern residents every year. Without the “snowbirds” who call Lee County their second home, Habitat for Humanity would not be as successful. In fact, because of the generous time, talents and treasures shared with us by those individuals, Habitat for Humanity of Lee County is the second largest affiliate in the nation.

Some of these dedicated “snowbirds” include the Sanibel men, who have put in over 500 hours on Habitat’s jobsites, the Summerlin Women, who have logged dozens of hours in Habitat’s paintshop alongside Peace Lutheran Church members.

Since 2007, the Landings bring a small group of men to join Habitat’s efforts. This team of “nail pounders” put in more than 300

volunteer hours in their first year alone.

The Cape Coral Construction Industry Association (CCCIA) extended a hand-up in 2009 by offering to rehab a house purchased from foreclosure inventory by Habitat for Humanity. Dozens of professional contractors volunteered three days and used some of their own excess building materials to accomplish the goal.

Students from twelve colleges and universities spent their spring break building houses in Lee County. The students traveled from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Massachusetts, Vermont, Colorado, Connecticut and Florida. More than 33,000 High School and college students actively support Habitat through campus chapters.

Florida Gulf Coast University Anthropology Club helped raise funds for Habitat’s cause through a Clothing Swap. Clothing swappers were asked to contribute garments in good condition and pay a fee to rummage through piles of donated clothes brought in by others. Both staff and students took part in the swap;

some even made additional cash donations. The club gave remaining clothes to Habitat’s Thrift Store and donated entry fees in the amount of $101.49 toward Habitat’s mission. The 3rd Annual Playhouse Christmas Fundraiser brought in variety this year, in terms of builders involved and the style of playhouses. An anonymous donor bought a playhouse kit and volunteers Bob Syversen, Tom Fitzgerald, Jay Harper and Jim Grier assembled the unit. Customers got a sneak peak of what was to come at the Holiday Art Market in Harborside. The house went on display in mid-November in Habitat’s North Fort Myers Thrift Store.

Viking Craftsman Companies donated a playhouse themselves, buying the materials and building it. The house appeared at the Orange Grove Publix in North Fort Myers.

A third house was paid for by a Chico’s employee. The company then arranged for Renaissance Homes to build a whimsical, Dr. Seuss style house. Chicos housed the home at their Metro Parkway headquarters.

To kick off the event at Publix, Habitat helped the Harry Chapin Food Bank collect canned goods in Habitat’s thrift store delivery truck. When playhouse tickets were sold and food was donated, bells jingled and horns honked.

The average volunteer served 9.6 hours with Habitat in 2009.The average individual donor gave $696.79 to Habitat during that same time period.

Each year, a few of Habitat’s corporate donors stand out amongst the rest. Here are the stories of those who brought enthusiasm from their employees as volunteers, gifts of products and services and essential financial support in FY09.

Publix Super Market Charities raised a ninth Habitat home in Lee County this year! The organization provides a grant to pay for their projects, while local Publix employees get involved in the building. Publix already has given the thumbs up to Habitat in support of a tenth project next year.

The Minnesota Twins players donated their celebrity status and time during Spring Training 2009 to bowl with the community and help Habitat raise another roof. This was the second year for the Twins & Pins event, which brought in $7,000. The Minnesota Twins organization have been proud supporters of Habitat for Humanity of Lee County for 5 years now.

In 2009, Habitat for Humanity and Whirlpool celebrated a full decade of partnership. Since 1999, Whirlpool has supported Habitat by donating a range and refrigerator for every new home built in North America. In 2009,

the partnership surpassed the milestone of 100,000 donated appliances, serving more than 50,000 Habitat families. By 2011, Whirlpool plans to support every Habitat home built globally.

Some of Lee County’s services and retail stepped up to Habitat’s plate this year by contributing what they do best to Habitat’s special events: Bob Evans Restaurant, Sanibel Bean Island Coffees, Cape Coral Chik-fil-a, Starbucks on Pine Island Road, Miss Lucy’s House of Holidays in South Fort Myers, Denmark Interiors and HoneyBaked Ham in Fort Myers.

Miromar Lakes residents put their tastebuds to the test for Habitat. The group prepared special dishes for a Taste of Miromar fundraiser and held their own golf tournament and auction to help raise money for housing. The group also took part in building efforts.

Shell Point Retirement Community helped Habitat raise funds by making a letter-

appeal to neighboring residents. The group sponsored their second Habitat home this year and rehabbed a house bought out of foreclosure for a deserving family!

The Verandah Community and 1st Bank partnered to sponsor home together through “Race the Roof”, an 8K race in the Verandah community. Nearly 200 runners laced up their

sneakers for the fundraiser.

Thanks to these organized efforts, many families are reaping the benefits of the benevolence of these neighborhoods. Habitat hopes to involve more communities in partnership to provide decent, affordable homes for hardworking partner families in our program.

A LegacyDuring 2008-2009 the support from local gated communities and local businesses continued in spite of harsh economic times. Through committee meetings, food prep, golf tournaments and road races, volunteers and financial support provided seven families with a safe, decent place to live.

Bonita Bay Residents have sponsored 19 Habitat homes since 1996. Under the

leadership of John Felsenthal and Cal Walker, the group spearheaded committee meetings, scheduled volunteers and designated neighborhood captains for their golf tournament and raffle fundraisers.

Shadow Wood residents also have a committee. Under the leadership of Bill Lentz, the gated community held auctions, raffles and golf tournaments to house 15 Habitat

families over the last six years.

Pelican Landing, led by Gerry Lanois, is another long standing gated community of Habitat supporters. The group mails an appeal letter every year to raise funds and holds a ladies tea luncheon. Pelican Landing raised the walls on their seventh Habitat home this year.

Faith-in-Action

Corporate PartnerRobb and Stucky Furnishings has contributed to the mission of affordable housing in a couple of ways. Through Habitat’s Thrift Store, Robb and Stucky has donated couches, chairs, tables, lamps, beds, dressers, night stands, patio chairs and tables, accessories…and the list goes on. These donations have allowed homeowners and the general public to purchase high-quality goods at affordable prices. In turn, the revenue from Habitat’s store has built dozens of homes in the community. It’s business partners such as Robb & Stucky Furnishings, donating literally thousands of dollars in merchandise, that has allowed Habitat to house even more families. Further, Robb & Stucky Furnishings has sponsored Habitat homes through the State of Florida Tax Credit Program.

Gerry Lanois has been a supporter of Habitat for Humanity of Lee County since 1995. In 2002, as a resident of Pelican landing, Gerry spearheaded a community-wide fund raising campaign. Using a direct-mail piece, Gerry asked residents of Pelican Landing to make donations to underwrite building materials for a single-family home. In his first year, as a committee of one, Gerry raised $35,000. Since then, Gerry has rallied other Pelican Landing residents to help raise over $330,000; including private donations and the Pelican Landing Ladies Tea. Together, these dollars have sponsored seven Habitat homes. In addition to fundraising efforts, Gerry is a Habitat “nail pounder”; raising the walls he helped fund. Last year, the Pelican Landing sponsored home was built in record time—less than 2 months. It typically takes a team of volunteers 4-6 months to complete the task. The legacy of one individual committed to a mission is priceless. At the end of the 2009 season Gerry retired as the primary fundraiser in Pelican Landing. A committee of 10 will replace him.

Habitat’s Faith Relations Committee serves as a common ground for all faiths to join hands in the name of Habitat and the affordable housing mission in Lee and Hendry counties. Without the dedicated individuals on this committee, it would be impossible to have Building on Faith; an annual build with volunteers of many faiths. It would also be difficult to encourage prayer support and fundraising efforts, through church goers and congregational mission committees. Joanne Landes-Ross has been a member of the committee since its inception in 2003. Joanne rarely misses a meeting and dedicates herself to the mission of the group. If there is a need, Joanne is willing to implement a plan. She diligently searches out opportunities to share Habitat’s cause with other congregations in hopes that all faiths can meet on Habitat grounds.

A Light to the WorldHabitat for Humanity is a ministry built upon Christian principles. 27 years later, we continue to uphold our values by charging zero interest on our mortgages (Exodus 22:25) and tithing ten percent (Leviticus 27:30). We’ve taken this theology beyond our backyard and extended the impact globally. Hard-working families worldwide struggle to get ahead just to put a safe, decent neighbors beyond our borders, multiplying the dream of homeownership for all God’s children.

We believe spreading the gospel is more than just speaking God’s word, it’s also living His commandments. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” - Matthew 5:16 This is what we are doing when we give a percentage of our dollars to foreign

nations in need. We’re building a lasting legacy for generations to come. It is our hope that through our building efforts, not only the families we house and the volunteers who build but also the community who embraces can see our love through this service, and know that we serve a good God who always provides when we put our trust in Him. Today, Habitat for Humanity is in nearly 90 countries.

In many foreign nations, it is low-income families who are affected the most by unhealthy, poorly insulated, expensive-to-heat housing. In FY09, Habitat for Humanity Europe and Central Asia helped 4,186 families build new/reconstructed homes, provided access to proper sanitation and helped them get affordable micro loans. By this, Habitat for Humanity of Lee County assisted in almost doubling the families served from the previous years.

Above, Ruzdi Ahmedov works on renovating a home in Veles, Macedonia for a family of five. The Habitat family will participate in Habitat Macedonia’s Home Improvement Fund, a microfinance program that lends smaller amounts to families who are seeking to improve

the condition of their homes but cannot afford to assume a mortgage.

Approximately 1,000,000 homes in Hungary are overcrowded, neglected or in disrepair; this is one in every four homes in the country. Above, a future Habitat homeowner family in Hungary is pictured in front of their house. Pal and Ida Ozsvath and their 4 year old twins: Norbert and Zsolt. Pal works for the electric company and Ida does house cleaning and works at a pastry shop.

Poland is one of the largest European countries, with over 38 million people. Of these, only one in three Poles live in what is considered ‘decent’ housing conditions.

Habitat is building a 69-home community, which will house more than 30 children.

Ionka Nitsova and her daughter Loana are pictured here. Ionka and her husband Mario have been sharing a Soviet-era apartment with their daughter and son, Antonio, on the outskirts of Sofia. Habitat for Human-ity Bulgaria provided them with a loan, enabling them to rehabilitate their apartment. In Bulgaria, impaired individuals constitute more than 19,000, or ten per-cent of the population and is one of the least inclusive countries towards disabled people. Habitat Bulgaria is working to reconstruct homes to make them more suit-able for those in need; more room to move inside and exits free of obstacles.

Below: Pairush Sae-Ua, 20 and his wife, Sangchun Sakchonlatakun, 22 are just one of many partner families grateful for Habitat’s presence around the world. The couple previously lived on the grounds of a Muslim Mosque in Chiang Mai, where Pairush works as a janitor. With a young son, Pairush and Sangchun work

a second job to support their family; making soy bean milk during the day and selling it along the street at night. As a combined income the two earn over 10,500 baht per month ($310 USD). The couple had never owned a home but had dreams of a place safe enough for their family. Before Habitat’s Carter build even

began, Pairush had already put in several sweat equity hours making preparations for the build. “My wife and I are so happy we were chosen to be one of the 82 families for the project in Chiang Mai. We can now look forward to a new future in our own home,” he says.

JIMMY & ROSALYNN CARTER WORK PROJECT 2009

This year, almost 3,000 volunteers from around the world gave 150 partner families a new life in the Mekong Region of SE Asia during the 26th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Habtiat for Humanity of Lee County contributed more than $100,000 in tithing monies, enough to build 22 homes. Chiang Mai, Thailand served

as the anchor to the five-country build, with additional projects taking place in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and the Yunnan province of China.Below is the Jaikum family. 46-year old Boontam is a van driver for a tourist agency and a gardener. His wife, 40-year old Kunthit is a housekeeper and works in a coffee shop. The couple have a 19-year old son, Teerachai who also works in the coffee shop. The Jaikum’s couldn’t afford a house in Chiang Mai, so they temporarily moved in with relatives. The house became too crowded,

so the Jaikum family moved several times until they found a one-room apartment. “We’re just so thankful for the professionalism, dedication and generosity from volunteers and donors around the world. People of many different religions are here helping us make this dream a reality. We’ve become a tight and loving community here. And when all the volunteers leave, we’ll be surrounded by the love poured into these houses and other homeowners getting a chance at a new life,” says Boontam.
