It is my privilege to welcome you to Spotlight Theatre’s performance of BYE BYE BIRDIE. Our students have prepared for months to make this production a success. Cast, crew, and pit members each have a crucial role to play in these performances, and I know we will be impressed with what we see and hear. Being a member of Spotlight Theatre requires an incredible commitment and personal drive. Rush-Henrietta students in grades 9-12 auditioned for a spot in the musical this past fall. They have spent untold hours learning lines, perfecting blocking, and rehearsing together. After all of this effort, they know better than anyone now what it means to be a cohesive team. Each year, Spotlight Theatre provides our community with a memorable musical. In past years, Rush-Henrietta has been treated to CATS, CHICAGO, GUYS AND DOLLS, PIPPIN, SHREK, WEST SIDE STORY, MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT, A CHORUS LINE, DISNEY’S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and SEUSSICAL among countless others. We have a rich tradition here when it comes to musical theatre. Each of these productions gave students the opportunity to grow as both performers and people. That is why I want to recognize the many adults who support our students in this extracurricular endeavor. Whether serving as the staging director, choreographer, costumer, or advisor, please know that we admire and appreciate these efforts. Likewise, we are grateful for the work done by the technical director, choral director, pit conductor, dramatic coach, lighting director, and sound director. Please refer to this program for more details. These adults have ensured a special experience for these students that will last a lifetime. Here in the Rush-Henrietta Central School District, we are proud of our students, the adults who teach and support them, and our entire community. This is a special school district and a great place to live, learn, and work. Enjoy the show!

History of Spotlight TheatreTheater has been a staple of the Rush-Henrietta Schools for many years. Both Roth Junior High School and Burger Junior High School produce plays and musicals each year, and the Senior High School has Spotlight Theatre. Prior to the re-opening of this building as the Rush-Henrietta Senior High School in September 1987, students were fortunate to work with directors Wayne Scarborough at R-H Roth and Bob Sagan at R-H Sperry High Schools. When R-H Roth and R-H Sperry combined, R-H Spotlight Theatre formed and has been setting precedents in musical theatre and drama since. Mr. Sagan continued as the stage director for many years. After retiring in 1998, Mr. Sagan went on to become the Education Coordinator for the Rochester Broadway Theatre League and is recognized in the Rochester community for his contributions to theatre education. 1999 allowed Mr. Scarborough to return to the director’s chair for a show he arranged – 1940’s Radio Hour. From 2000-2008, the R-H Spotlight Theatre spring musical was directed by Trish Annese. Under Ms. Annese, productions like PIPPIN, CATS, and WORKING brought theater to a new level in our community. (Ms. Annese lent her talents the past two years, as Spotlight transitioned with new adult roles.) After Ms. Annese stepped down from artistic direction, our subsequent five productions, including CHICAGO, DISNEY’S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and WEST SIDE STORY were directed by Michael Pincelli. These performances left audiences astounded and garnered us a host of awards and recognition within the community. Mr. Brian Bohrer then joined the ranks of Artistic Director, and productions like SHREK, MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT, and THE ADDAMS FAMILY delighted our audiences. A collaboration with Geva Theatre Center for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS was groundbreaking and brought a new sense of theatrical understanding to our talented students. This year, Ms. Kimberly Swaisgood and Mrs. Erin Wright work together to create BYE BYE BIRDIE. Ms. Swaisgood is staging and choreographing the show, while Mrs. Wright is working with actors to develop their dramatic skills. In addition to the Spring Musical, each year Spotlight Theatre produces a dramatic play in the Fall and a Shakespearean play in the Spring under the guidance of Ms. Laura Reed, Mrs. Sheryl Diana, Mrs. Erin Wright, and our creative team of adults and talented students. This school year, audiences were treated to Anne of Green Gables and will participate in a Shakespearian coffee house experience. What is most exciting, is the way in which students have chosen to be centrally involved in our productions, with a history of artistic directors welcoming student participation in shows. Elisha Snow (class of ‘17) directed A Raisin in the Sun in June of 2017, with Cameron Clements, class of ‘18, assistant directing; Bridget Kline (class of ‘17) designed all costumes for both THE ADDAMS FAMILY and A Raisin in the Sun. In 2018-19, we welcomed student assistant directors, Ashlie Morrison, class of ‘19, (Much Ado About Nothing) and Marli Worden, class of ‘19 (A CHORUS LINE). Last year, Ms. Reed offered the unique opportunity for students to both direct and write for the fall production, #PresentTense, with two student writers and four student directors. We hope to continue to see this level of involvement from our talented youth. We are extremely proud of our heritage in the Rush-Henrietta community. Many students have graced the stage over the years and now return as alumni (or as R-H staff!) to view our productions. We thank you for joining us and hope that you will continue to support R-H Spotlight Theatre for many years to come.

BYE BYE BIRDIE has been lauded as one of the most widely performed musicals by high school theatre programs since the 60s, according to an article by Elissa Nadworny, who writes for NPR.org. After preparing this year’s production, we certainly know why. BIRDIE is classic Broadway in every sense - a fun and interesting story line, great music and incredibly fun dancing. Our cast has enjoyed swing dancing and fox trot lessons while singing standard show tunes. The wonderfully funny script has taught them about comedic timing, and the numerous roll-on set pieces have challenged our crew to be their best. This book show offers cast the opportunity to really develop their characters and consider how there can be a load of comedy, as well as poignant and touching moments. (Remember the power of the pause!)Two years after Elvis Presley was drafted into the Army in 1958, this important event in American history was retold in BYE BYE BIRDIE, the first musical created by the team of Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, and the first show directed and choreographed by Gower Champion. Champion started his career as a night club dancer in the 1930’s. After serving in World War 2, he was picked up by MGM studios as an actor and a dancer for several musical films. His jazzy style and ballroom beginnings transferred well to BYE BYE BIRDIE.BYE BYE BIRDIE is about a teenager in a small Midwestern town who has been chosen to receive “one last kiss” from rock’n’roll star Conrad Birdie before he goes into the Army. The show opened on April 14, 1960 at the Martin Beck Theater and had a run of 607 performances. It helped to boost its original leads, Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke, into superstardom. Van Dyke actually earned the lead role of Albert Peterson at his audition for a smaller part when an impromptu soft shoe dance caught the eye of Champion; he was actually taught to dance for the role, alongside the already accomplished Rivera. The original run was nominated for eight Tony awards, winning four, including Best Choregraphy and Best Musical. The show was so popular, it has been recreated as a short lived Broadway encore, a US tour, a Broadway revival, a full feature film, and a television movie. There is talk to restage it for an upcoming BYE BYE BIRDIE Live on NBC, featuring Jennifer Lopez as Rosie. It has been several years since Spotlight produced a classic Broadway book show. Our students have really enjoyed learning, stylizing, and performing this show. We couldn’t be more proud of the efforts of our talented students, from the singing to dancing to design. The fun we’ve had observing the development of characters both on and off the stage (Can you guess one harbors the deep seeded fear of trees? Who lost their father in WWII? Who is a dance marathon enthusiast?) is seen in their dedicated performances on stage, from lead to ensemble. The costume crew has created and prepared individualized looks for all, and we hope you’ll notice the special colors and prints dedicated to certain characters. The massive back wall pays homage to a certain variety show of the late 60s/early 70s, and the bright colors of the sets echo the overall fun and exciting nature of the show as a whole. We hope you’ll take a walk with us down memory lane - back to the days of Elvis, Ed Sullivan, The Beatles, and Conway Twitty. We know you will relish this classic rock and roll show, tapping your toes along to its upbeat and recognizable tunes. We hope you’ll have a few belly laughs, just as we have, and leave our space feeling a little lighter and with a bigger smile than when you arrived.

It has been an honor returning to the Spotlight Theatre team again for this year’s production of, BYE BYE BIRDIE! This was the first show I produced as an educator, and it has been also much fun rediscovering the fun and entertaining story of Kim and Conrad and Albert and Rosie! Our cast members have worked so hard on their singing, dancing, and acting this year. In addition to their hard work in rehearsals, they are all full time students and members of other performing ensembles in and out of school. Many have jobs or are involved with other extracurricular activities and athletics. I am so impressed with all of their efforts and how maturely they managed their responsibilities both in and out of rehearsals.Thank you so much to all of the cast, crew, and production team for their efforts, especially Erin Wright for chasing all of us to meet (read “turn in late”) our deadlines - and always with a smile!A big “Thank You” to the R-H Community for your support of the performing arts and for giving us the opportunity to “Put on a Happy Face” and perform for you! Thank you for being here with us and we hope to see you in our theater for future concerts and performances.
