WHAT WE HEARD SO FAR SFMTA.COM/EXCELSIORTRAFFICCALMING

Excelsior Neighborhood Traffic Calming Project Open House | Cleveland Elementary School

February 9th and 13th, 2019

Over the past year and a half, the project team met with various community members and groups to learn about the challenges and opportunities facing residential streets. We also attended neighborhood meetings and events, hosted drop-in office hours, and joined various neighborhood walk-throughs. This feedback helped clarify the importance of improving traffic safety, especially around schools and parks, and ties directly to the project goals.

“ ““ ““ Please improve walking routes to BART

and Muni”

Held 30+ stakeholder meetings with additional follow up

70+ people attended the first open house event

Sent 10,000 postcards inviting neighbors to the project open

houses

Spoke face to face with 50+ people during drop-in office hours and

community workshops

“We need to be able to walk to commercial corridors (Mission/Geneva) that serve our

communities’ needs”

“ Protect kids walking to school”

“ “

I am most concerned with the safety of familes & seniors who walk and cross residential street everyday”

“Cars are illegally parked at street corners, blocking driver and pedestrian visibility”

“I am most concerned with cars blocking sidewalks and double parking...we need better regulations and enforcement”

“We need more crosswalks and speed humps, especially near schools and parks”

“Don’t take away parking!

“Adding speed humps will help, but traffic enforcement needs to happen for

improvements to be effective”

PROPOSED TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

• Encourages slow and calm traffic• Typically slows traffic to 17 to 18 miles per hour

• Raised crosswalks slow vehicles traversing the crosswalk

CONTINENTAL CROSSWALKS RAISED CROSSWALKSSPEED HUMPS AND CUSHIONS

BULB-OUTS

• Shortens crossing distances for pedestrians• Helps to slow vehicle turning speeds• May include landscaping to help create a more pleasant walking environment

WAYFINDING AND SIGNS

• Warning signs can alert road users to the potential presence of pedestrians or bikes• Wayfinding signs help guide cyclists to nearby destinations using designated bike routes

• High visibility continental crosswalks increase visibility for people crossing the street• More visible to approaching vehicles and have been shown to improve driver yielding behavior

TRAFFIC CIRCLES

• Includes a raised island located in the center of and intersection around which traffic must circulate

• Encourages slow and calm traffic• May include landscaping to help create a more

pleasant walking environment• Reduces vehicle - to - vehicle conflict points in

the intersection and reduces the severity of collisions by directing all traffic in one direction
