CARING ABOUT FACTS AND FEELINGSCARING ABOUT FACTS AND FEELINGSCARING ABOUT FACTS AND FEELINGSCARING ABOUT FACTS AND FEELINGS

In the opening verse of our parsha, the Torah mentions the death of Aaron’s two eldest sons. What is omitted is the reason why they died. The Chizkuni remarks that their deaths are relevant to impress the gravity of the prohibition in the next verse, forbidding Aaron from walking into the Holy of Holies on a whim, as his sons had done. But this explanation also omits the more explicit reason why they died. According to Vayikra 10:1, they died because they brought an esh zarah, a strange fire o&ering that was not sanctioned by Hashem.

The next odd pass over in our parsha comes from the Torah’s reference to our time in Egypt. The Torah says that we were dwellers there, not that we were slaves (Vayikra, 18:3). According to professor of bible, Rabbi Shalom Carmy, the Torah tactfully avoids mentioning our slavery to the Egyptians in certain contexts, preferring alternative terms like “dwellers” or “sojourners.” The Torah models a sensitivity in communicating important things, and withholds the whole truth when it is either less relevant to the point or when it would not be received well. Read Vayikra 18:1-5 and you can see why the term “dwellers” might be more tactful than “slaves.”

Perhaps this explanation may also shed light on the conspicuous glossing over of Nadav and Avihu’s deaths. At the time, the Torah was narrating what exactly happened to them, so the Torah explicitly mentions that they brought an improper korban. The omission might be a considerate way to model avoiding repeating the whole truth, either for the sake of Aaron’s sons or for the sake of Aaron himself. After all, the Torah writes that we must “distance ourselves from falsehood” (Shemot 23:7). It does not write: “truth, truth shall you pursue.”

When we champion rhetoric like “facts don’t care about your feelings,” then we harden our own feelings to not care about the feelings of the persons with whom we are communicating. A debate might be “won” in the court of public opinion, and the facts might even be on the winners side, but a real change of heart may be lost. The question is: what is the agenda of the respective debaters? The Torah does not concern itself so much with the language of debate, but rather with the language of communication.

The security committee has developed a plan; the first steps are being implemented e&ective June 1, 2019. • A new security company with guards with enhanced training is being hired. • On Shabbat, holidays and events, only the front and back (parking lot) doors will be accessible. Therefore, on Shabbat, holidays

and events, the side door (west laneway) will be alarmed and only used in the event of an emergency. The alarm will sound even on Shabbat (e&ective June 1).

• The best security is that of our own members. To this e&ect, a member-based security team is being established. This team will receive professional training to identity security risks and, if needed, respond appropriately. We require volunteers to join this We require volunteers to join this We require volunteers to join this We require volunteers to join this teamteamteamteam.
