In פרשת שמות, we learn of the first encounter

between Moshe Rabbeinu and Hkb”h. This event is

quite momentous, as the relationship between

Moshe and Hashem is historically unparalleled.

The level of communication that Moshe would

ultimately merit with Hkb”h far surpasses that of

any other human being in all of history. It is re-

markable therefore to consider that the very

first words that Hashem says to Moshe are,

"remove your shoes for you are standing on holy

ground." While it is undoubtedly necessary for

Hashem to review the rules of appropriate eti-

quette when communicating with the divine, it is

nonetheless striking that these be the very first

words that Hashem should share with him. Why

does Hashem not first introduce Himself (as He

does immediately thereafter), and wait to review

the rules of conduct later? Perhaps this type of

introduction is to underscore the importance of

establishing a foundation of respect upon which

their relationship could then be built. In life,

many of the connections and bonds that we share

with family and friends are built primarily upon a

foundation of mutual love and endearment. Often

however, there exists an insufficient degree of

respect in these relationships. Children love their

parents but do not always speak to them as they

should. Students often admire their teachers but

do not always express themselves in the most

appropriate manner. Hashem teaches Moshe dur-

ing their very first encounter, that a relationship

that is to be meaningful and fulfilling must be

built upon a foundation of respect. Friendship,

camaraderie, love and endearment will follow. But

first, there must be respect. שבת שלום

c- u- t- t- i- n- g e- d- g- e Tuesday was a very exhilarating day for the middle

schoolers at RYNJ. The annual spelling bee went virtual.

This year, for the first time ever, the spelling bee was live-

streamed into all of the junior high classrooms. Parents and

grandparents were able to enjoy and "shep nachas" in the

comfort of their homes and offices. Thanks to the exper-

tise of Rabbi Efrayim Clair, RYNJ educational technologist,

this new initiative went off without a hitch. Sixth grader,

Esther Feldman, and Eighth grader, Yoni Siegel, competed

like pros with the final round going to Yoni spelling the win-

ning word b- i- l- a- t- e- r-a-l. Kudos to Mrs. Naomi Lands-

man, the spelling bee coordinator, for bringing excitement

and buzz to our spelling bee. Thank you to Mrs. Amy Pruzan-

sky and Mrs. Lucy Ianacone, our bee judges.

On Wednesday morning, January 7th, the Middle School boys had their third Kiddush Levana breakfast of the year. There were two components to the program. The first was the final skit competition between the best skit at each grade level. The boys had been given stories that demonstrate good Middos. Each small group of students prepared a skit and competed against the other groups in the class. When the winner was chosen the winning group com-peted against the best skit in the other classes and the final competition was at the Kiddush Levana breakfast. Congratulations to the winners, 6B. The second part of the program featured moving presentations by two RYNJ graduates, Yoni Weisinger and Tzvi Wiesel, who currently serve in the Israel Defense forces. Tzvi talked about his experience as a member of the infantry and how he enlisted in the army after his year of Yeshiva in Israel. Yoni told about his experience making Aliyah while still in high school and inte-grating into Israel life since that time. Yoni also talked about what it means to be a member of the tank corps and Tzvi discussed his unit’s role in counter ter-rorism. The boys listened in silence for about 25 minutes and then had a brief question and answer period. We are so proud of these young men and the courage they have displayed. Rabbi Dovid Kaminetsky

Our Chayalim, Tzvi and Yoni, visited multiple classes and shared their stories as well as answered questions from fascinated and impressed students and faculty. Most heart-warming was the shalom they received from their former teachers who were overjoyed to see them. Not to be outdone, and with a celebrity in school, Batya Weisinger got in on the action. It was the best “Show and Tell” when Batya brought her brother Yoni into her kitah. Batya told her class what Yoni does, he’s a chayal in Tzahal. Then she led her class in a group reading of Tefilla L’cha-yal that she read flawlessly from the Smartboard. You can see Kitah Aleph and Batya say the tefilla, by clicking on this link, http://rynj.org/apps/video/

watch.jsp?v=53891 or go to http://rynj.org/apps/video/. Not only are the Weisingers and the Wiesels shepping nachas, the entire RYNJ family is too. May Hashem watch over them and protect them as they protect Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael.

Meet the Moms – a Success! Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Chanukah sea-son, replete with class plays and family parties, RYNJ mothers managed to find time to host individual class get-togethers for other moms. Over the past two months, each Kindergarten and First Grade class held an event where the mothers of each class had the op-portunity to meet and mingle. One Kindergarten class organized a dessert recipe exchange and tasting. “It was a pleasure hosting an event that allowed the mothers in the class to have a night out and meet one another,” Terri Karasick said. “The best part is that we all left with a cookbook that we created as a unit. We felt like our very own Kindergarteners; just like the Morah creates a unified class book every week, now we, the moms, were able to design a book together as well.” The “Meet-the-Moms” program is an informal way for mothers in the class to get to know each other. It helps create a sense of family within the RYNJ com-munity and enhances the friendliness and warmth among the parent body. The goal is to create a strong-er sense of camaraderie, especially for the new RYNJ families. A grateful parent wrote, “Thank you for creating this program. It has definitely opened a new avenue for knowing people in the school.” “Kol Hakavod ladies...truly a success,” wrote one Kindergarten mom. “Fun, interactive, a gorgeous dis-play of food and mindful Torah. It was super fun-lets

do it again.” Irit Sandler Science picks up steam at RYNJ These are some of the

“מסביב לשולחן”שהשתתפו בתכנית

The banot of 5G1 spent the last month enveloped in a Navi project-based learning unit. The girls were paired and given resources and guidelines to help them through the process of learning, analyzing, and expressing their knowledge. Each group had opportunities to check in with their Morah daily to make sure they were staying on track. The

girls ex-pressed their mas-tery over the materi-al by creat-ing models depict-ing scenes from the Perakim. They pre-

sented their models to the class this past week. The girls did a mag-nificent job and learned a lot about themselves as learners along the way! The models are on display in the main concourse on the third floor. Morah Greenberg

Rabbi Chesner and 3B2 made a Rosh Chodesh bulletin board to

enhance their learning of the laws of recognizing Rosh Chodesh,

based on their Mishnah studies.
