From the Rabbi ELOKAY NESHAMA Every morning, either before or after Birkat HaTorah (depending on the order in the siddur used) we recite Elokay Neshama-G-d, The Soul You endowed me with. Elokay Neshama expresses our appreciation to G-d for restoring unto us our divine neshamah - soul, and thereby restoring life after sleeping through the night. Although we already recited Modeh Ani upon awakening in which we thank G-d for presenting us with another day of life, this tefillah focuses primarily on our spiritual core, our souls.

The crux of the prayer reads- “My G-d, the neshama that you have endowed me with is pure. You created it, willed it specifically into me, and one day you will retrieve it from me and guard over it until the Messianic Era at which time you will return it to me once again.”

There are two foundation principles of a believing Jew in this prayer. 1. Beneath our physical exteriors rests a purely spiritual and eternal soul that lives

forever-even after we die. 2. Although our physical existence is temporary, we believe that when the time is

correct, G-d will resurrect the dead and return their souls unto them.

Take Home Tip: We live in an age that stresses fitness. There are nutritionists, fitness coaches, and personal trainers… all to provide guidance towards improved physical fitness. But what about spiritual fitness? Are we spiritually fit enough? Are we feeding our Neshamot with the appropriate soul food? Soul food is learning Torah, davening heartfelt prayers and performing kind deeds and fulfilling mitzvot. Every human being is a composite of body and soul. It is our responsibility to take care of our bodies as well as our souls all the days of our lives.

Shabbat Shalom. Rabbi Ephraim Epstein

Personalized Mishebeyrach In addition to reciting the names of ill people during the communal Mishabeyrach prayer, if would like Rabbi Epstein to include the name of a particular person in his Tefillah, please email him the name before Shabbat at [email protected]. He will recite it until the following Rosh Chodesh. To keep a person on the list for another month, please send another email at the start of the new month to Rabbi Epstein.
