Dear SHAD Waterloo Innovation Challenge Students: On behalf of the University of Waterloo, we welcome you to this exciting initiative. The SHAD Waterloo Innovation Challenge (WIC) was initiated to give SHAD students the opportunity to build on their team’s momentum leading up to the SHAD entrepreneurship cup. Teams will continue building their ideas, developing their business models, and learn the fundamentals of pitching. In addition, team members will have the practical experience of project managing a second phase of product development, leading up to a final business pitch presentation. During the two months, teams will collaborate to present a 90 second pitch and an investor pitch, enhancing a student’s ability to work in teams and develop their initiative to ignite the innovative potential of their business idea. An optimistic attitude, a tenacious spirit, and an ability to solve complex social and economic problems are crucial characteristics for an entrepreneur’s success. Developing entrepreneurial skills that build on a young students character is what will drive innovation and the economy into the future. WIC hopes to facilitate these personal developments with participating students, as they look to their own potential education and entrepreneurial endeavors. As WIC embarks on the first year, we hope that the innovative environment of the University of Waterloo, coupled with the world class entrepreneurial eco-‐system of Kitchener – Waterloo will inspire exceptional high school students to lead a movement of positive global change. Go ahead, ignite the WIC! With great enthusiasm, The SHAD Valley University of Waterloo Innovation Challenge 2014/2015 Team

Purpose of Challenge is to enhance an already close relationship between SHAD
and the University of Waterloo. The proposed challenge allows SHAD teams from
across Canada to access UW’s entrepreneurship expertise and personnel following
the SHAD Entrepreneurship Cup in October.
For two months, in a virtual environment, SHAD teams can continue to build their
projects/ideas/businesses with the support of Waterloo mentors and learning
resources. In early January, SHAD teams will arrive for a two day competition in
Waterloo where they will have the opportunity to visit Canada’s leading
entrepreneurial ecosystems and present their projects to a team of expert judges at
a gala dinner event. Teams will also have an opportunity to learn about UWaterloo’s
entrepreneurial ecosystem through tours and presentations at the K-‐W HUB
(Google, Velocity) and at the historic St. Jacob’s community that houses the Research
Entrepreneurs Accelerating Prosperity (REAP) Felt labs. Students will participate in
experiential educational workshops, lead by our university and corporate sponsors.

Competition Overview:
The Waterloo SHAD Innovation Cup allows SHAD teams from across Canada to access the University of Waterloo’s entrepreneurship expertise through the CONRAD Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre’s Virtual Incubation Program (VIP).
SHAD 2014 teams will have the opportunity to continue to build on their Living Large with a Small Footprint projects/ideas/businesses.
2014 SHAD Valley Entrepreneurship Cup Theme: Living Large with a Small Footprint
Abundant resources and the consumer culture of the past century have left a legacy of aging infrastructure and in expression of what the good life looks like: a two-‐car garage attached to a three bedroom house on a four-‐hectare lot. Current movements toward a more sustainable future are at odds with this increasingly unrealistic expectation. What innovations will satisfy a crowded world’s expectations of the good life, while meeting the challenge of a new reality?
In short: How might Canadians live large with a small footprint.

Teams will get practical experience in pitching, developing presentations and build upon their project’s business plans. Students will receive support from Waterloo mentors and have access to additional learning resources.
Teams will be judged in the following four categories:
-‐ Greatest Investment Readiness (Grand Prize) -‐ Highest Degree of Innovation (disruptive potential) -‐ Most Improvements to business model and prototype since SHAD cup -‐ People’s Choice
Your primary Waterloo Innovation Challenge (WIC) contact throughout the competition is Tara Scanlan: [email protected] or 226 – 789 – 7166.

Team Composition and Eligibility: All SHAD Valley 2014 Alumni are eligible to participate in WIC and team members are encouraged to apply, however some original team members may choose to opt out of the challenge. Teams are a continuation of the SHAD 2014 Entrepreneurship Cup teams. All members from the original winning team at each campus are automatically considered members of the SHAD WIC team for their respective campuses. There is no restriction on size of the SHAD WIC teams, however smaller teams are recommended, as they are more effective. If a SHAD 2014 student is interested in participating in the challenge, but his/her original team has not registered for the challenge, he/she may join a WIC participating team.
Team Leaders Responsibility: 1. A team leader needs to contact the respective team members and collect
the names of the members interested in participating in WIC. 2. The team leader will contact Tara Scanlan [email protected],
indicating they are the primary contact for the team, with the respective project title, and a list of participating team members.
3. The team leader will keep team members informed on project updates, and communicate with Tara Scanlan on behalf of the team.
A FINAL team list is due to [email protected] by Friday Nov 7th, 2014 at noon. (Registration for 2014/2015 is now closed)

Submissions: Each team is asked to submit their pitch decks directly to Tara Scanlan and to the VIP platform, which is currently being facilitated by GoogleDrive. Team leaders will be given a log-‐in to a GoogleDrive folder, that will contain space for teams to create and manage their presentations, receive feedback on their work, sign up for 1 on 1 mentor hours, communicate with members and facilitate project management. Students should check back to the WIC website’s blog for learning modules and resources. The GoogleDrive space is a place for teams to collaborate virtually, and interact with mentors. In each GoogleDrive teams will find the following:
• Challenge 1: 90 Second Pitch Folder o This is where teams can upload their 90-‐second pitch power points,
audio/video recordings and final presentation. • Challenge 2: Investor Pitch Presentation Folder
o This is where teams can upload their investor pitch, business plans and recording of the presentation.
• Task Boards o A place for teams to manage their tasks and milestones.
• SHAD Entrepreneurship Cup Marketing & Business Plan Folder (Please upload your teams)
o Teams need to upload the marketing and business plans (only these two) from the SHAD Entrepreneurship Cup.
• Mentor Question Board o Have an urgent question for your mentor but don’t have a 1 on 1
meeting for a few days? Here is where you can ask questions and get fast responses.
• Mentor & 1 on 1’s Sign-‐Up Sheet o Teams will have the opportunity to sign up to talk with mentors and 1
on 1 meeting with the core SHAD WIC team. • Team Lists
o Please double check this is your full team that will attend the competition in Waterloo.

The 90-‐second pitch deck and audio is due at 11:59pm Nov 22nd. 1-‐3 representatives for the team will present the pitch to their mentor(s) on Nov 23nd between 1pm and 6pm. The 1st challenge sessions will last 30 minutes and teams will receive feedback from judges. Pitches will be presented over Google+ and 1-‐3 team members are invited to join the session.

Slide Content Comments
Title
Include your business’s name, your name and title, and contact information.
The investor can read the slide—cut to the chase and summarize what you do (for example, we sell software, we protect the environment). Open simply with, “This is my company and this is what we do.” You want to get investors thinking about the potential for your company and the size of the market.
Problem
Explain your investors the pain that you’re alleviating. The goal is to get everyone nodding and buying in.
Avoid looking for a solution that is searching for a problem. Minimize or eliminate citations of consulting studies about the future size of the market.
Solution
Describe how you alleviate this pain and the meaning that you make. Ensure that the audience clearly understands what you sell and your value proposition.
This is not the place for an in-‐depth technical explanation. Provide just the gist of how you fix the pain.
Business model
Explain how you make money—who pays you, your channels of distribution and your gross margins.
In general, a unique, untested business model is a scary proposition. If you truly have a revolutionary business model, explain it in terms of familiar ones. This is your opportunity to drop the names of organizations that are already using your product or service.

Underlying magic
Describe the technology, secret sauce or magic behind your product or service.
Aim for less text and more diagrams, schematics and flowcharts on this slide. White papers and objective proofs of concepts are helpful here.
Marketing and sales
Explain how you will reach your customer and your marketing leverage points.
Convince the audience that you have an effective go-‐to-‐market strategy that will not break the bank.
Competition
Provide a complete view of the competitive landscape. Too much is better than too little.
Never dismiss your competition. Everyone—customers, investors and employees—wants to hear why you’re good, not why the competition is bad.
Management team
Describe the key players on your management team, board of directors and board of advisors, as well as your major investors.
Do not be afraid to show up with less than a perfect team. All startups have holes in their team—what’s truly important is whether you understand that there are holes and you are willing to fix them.
Financial projections and key metrics
Provide a three-‐ to five-‐year forecast containing not only dollars but also key metrics, such as number of customers and conversion rate.
Do a bottom-‐up forecast. Include long sales cycles and seasonality. Making people understand the underlying assumptions of your forecast is as important as the numbers you’ve fabricated.
Current status, accomplishments to date, timeline and use of funds
Explain the current status of your product or service, what the near future looks like and how you’ll use the money you’re trying to raise.
Share the details of your positive momentum and traction. Then use this slide to close with a bias toward action.
