MMCF Diary

Development of Government Girls' Senior Secondary School

Udaipur by

Maharana of Mewar Charitable FoundationThe City Palace

Udaipur

Preamble

Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, The City

Palace, Udaipur is a public charitable trust registered under

Rajasthan Public Trust Act 1959. An initiative of the

custodian of the House of Mewar for perpetuation of its

core values such as service to society and mankind also

serves as a 'temple of inspiration' for future generations and

continues the model of sustainability that is 'Eternal

Mewar'. Operational since 1969, over 300 professionals are

engaged in realizing this vision.

MMCF has taken the responsibility of preserving the

remarkable tangible and intangible cultural heritage. This

enormous responsibil ity is fulf i l led through a

comprehensive and informed set of initiatives. These

include the maintenance and continued development of

The City Palace Museum and the other projects preserving

local culture through the celebration of festivals in the

traditional manner, documenting and researching cultural

practices and creating forums for knowledge transfer.

MMCF's Outreach Programme is in the field of academics,

eco-management, philanthropic works and heritage

conservation and promotion. The Foundation aims at

contributing to a large-scale systematic change with a focus

on establishing a center of excellence at Udaipur.

Government Girls' Senior Secondary School, formerly

known as H.H. The Maharana Girls High School, Jagdish

Chowk, Udaipur was constructed during the reign of

Maharana Shambhu Singh, the 71st Custodian of The House

of Mewar (r. 1861 - 1874 AD). The school was established in

1864 AD at Jagdish Chowk, Udaipur. Presently it is

administered by the District Education Officer (Secondary),

Udaipur under the Directorate of Education, Government of

Rajasthan, Bikaner. Presently 500 girls are studying in the

school from Class IX to XII.

Why Restoration through and by MMCF?

It is most necessary to clarify as to why MMCF is restoring

the Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School (GGSSS),

Udaipur. The School Authorities approached Shriji Arvind

Singh Mewar of Udaipur, Chairman and Managing Trustee

of MMCF, the 76th Custodian of The House of Mewar to

repair and restore the main building of the school. The

matter was considered by the Board of Trustees of MMCF

and it was decided to support the school request.

From MMCF Perspective:

a. The historic relationship between the GGSSS School and the House of Mewar.

b. The vast experience of MMCF to undertake restoration projects in such buildings.

c. The in-house availability of numerous consultants.

d. The large pool of master craftsmen and traditional skilled workmen with MMCF.

e. The close proximity of GGSSS which just outside the main entrance of the MMCF premises.

From the Practical Perspective:

a. The GGSSS has no experience in undertaking any such restoration project.

b. The GGSSS has no resource to undertake this project.

c. The school has no mechanism to receive specific donation and apply it to the project.

Therefore MMCF:

MMCF is fully committed toward completing this project. MMCF is therefore the nodal Organisation / NGO to complete this restoration for GGSSS. MMCF is not charging any fee for any work undertaken for this project. MMCF expects an acknowledgment for its contribution in arranging and executing this project to be placed on record and also displayed on the premises. The work is to be taken in 2 phases:

1. Outer facade and two classroom

2. Other classrooms and Hall

The reasoning for the decision is broadly enumerated below:

From the GGSSS Perspective:

a. There has been insufficient investment made towards repairs and maintenance in the GGSSS in the past.

b. The GGSSS building is presently in dilapidated state.

c. The District Education Officer, the authority, responsible for the school has expressed her inability to get any funds released from the Government for the GGSSS.
