globally”, SISU has won an unparalleled reputation in China’s linguistic research and

diplomatic studies. Drawing on our strengths in multi-language programs and

multi-disciplinary resources, while responding to national and regional strategies, we

operate more than 70 research institutes and centers serving as academic think tanks

to provide advisory services on language policies, diplomatic strategies and global

public opinion of China. These academic entities have contributed landmark research

and are also dedicated to promoting the development of social sciences in China.

SISU currently edits and publishes 12 highly regarded and rigorously

peer-reviewed academic journals. Among them, the Journal of Foreign Languages,

funded by China’s National Social Science Foundation, is the only one on linguistic

studies among China’s “Top 30 University Journals in Social Sciences”.

School of International Relations and Public Affairs at the Shanghai

International Studies University

The School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was founded on June 27, 2014. It is a comprehensive institution straddling teaching and academic research, integrating the School of International Relations and Diplomatic Affairs, the Department of International Affairs in SISU Law School, the Bachelor’s Program of International Civil Servants in the School of English Studies and several academic centers for area studies. Its origin can be traced back to the Office of Soviet Union Studies, which was founded in 1980, and developed successively into the Institute of Soviet Union Studies, the Institute of International Studies and the School of International Relations and Diplomatic Affairs.

Currently, SIRPA hosts several research institutions, including the Center for G20 Studies, the Center for Canadian Studies, the Center for Chinese Overseas Interests Studies, the Center for China and International Organizations Studies, the Center for Ethics and International Affairs, the Center for the Study of Parliaments and the Center for Global Governance Studies. These centers, as a group, constitute a political studies think tank and research system with expertise in international politics and comparative politics and characterized by area studies and global governance studies.

SIRPA has made huge progress in cultivating students. To date, approximately 400 bachelor’s students, 300 master’s students and doctoral students have graduated from the school. It offers doctoral degree program in the general discipline of Political Science, with six specific fields including International Relations, Diplomatic Studies , International Politics, Middle East Studies, Area Studies and China Studies. It also offers master’s degree programs of seven distinctive disciplines: International Relations, International Politics, Diplomatic Studies, Chinese and Foreign Political Institutions, International Public Administration, China Studies, and Area Studies. It also serves as a host institution for post-doctoral program of Political Science at SISU. In this sense, SIRPA provides an integrated education system of Political Science.

SIRPA consists of the Department of International Relations, the Department of Diplomatic Studies, the Department of English Language Teaching, the Department of Comparative Politics, the Department of Public Administration and the Institute for China Studies, with several area studies centers and scientific studies institutions such as the editorial office of International Review. There are thirty faculty members in the school, nine of whom are professors (professorial research fellows), thirteen are associate professors (associate professorial research fellows) and eight are lecturers (assistant professorial research fellows). It also has eleven staff members for administrative and student affairs. Some renowned scholars at home and abroad serve as part-time professors. The Dean is Professor Guo Shuyong.

The Center for G20 Studies at Shanghai International Studies

UniversityThe Center for G20 Studies at Shanghai International Studies University has

sixteen full-time research fellows, including five professors and eight associate professors. The academic members have gained high reputations from different institutions. The members include one New Century Excellent Talent in Universities funded by the Ministry of Education, one Leading Talent funded by the Shanghai Municipal Government, two Shuguang Scholars supported by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, two Chenguang Scholars supported by the Shanghai Municipal Education Communion, one scholar endorsed by the Pujiang Program of the Shanghai Municipal Government, and two fellows in the Talent Development Funding Program of Shanghai. The Center also has two foreign experts.

The Center’s research focuses include the global economic agenda, the relationship between major powers and the G20, the institutionalization of the G20 as well as China’s role in the G20. It has made tremendous achievements. Over the past five years, five national social science projects have been funded, twelve projects have been funded by provincial and ministerial agencies. Its members have published six academic monographs, translated five books, contributed forty-six articles in CSSCI journals and six in SSCI journals, and presented twelve research papers at reputable international academic conferences. Meanwhile, more than 160 commentaries from the Center have appeared in newspapers such as People’s Daily, International Herald Leader, Global Times and so forth.

Since it was founded in 2008, the Center has hosted four international academic conferences in collaboration with the G20 Research Group of University of Toronto. Nine members were visiting scholars at world-renowned universities and institutions, including the G20 Research Group of University of Toronto, the Centre for International Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, the Centre for the Study of Globalization and Regionalization at the University of Warwick, the Institute of East Asia Studies at American University, and the Korean Development Institute. The Center has undertaken three internationally collaborative research projects funded by LSE Centre for International Studies, the Academy of Korean Studies and the Institute of European Studies of Macau.

Among the Centre’s students, 51 have earned Master degrees and 12 have earned Doctorates. The Center had received eight foreign students for postgraduate education. Three PhD candidates were sent to University of Toronto and University of British Columbia for joint-training. Among all the graduates, three continue their doctoral studies at Simon Fraser University, KU Leuven and the University of Auckland. Two students work for the ministries and offices of the central government of China, and three do teaching and research at universities and institutes.

G20 Research Group of University of TorontoThe G20 Research Group is a global network of scholars, students and

professionals in the academic, research, business, non-governmental and other communities who follow the work of the G20 leaders, finance ministers and central bank governors, and other G20 institutions. It is directed from Trinity College, the Munk School of Global Affairs and the department of Political Science at the University of Toronto, also the home of the G7 Research Group and the BRICS Research Group.

The G20 Research Group’s mission is to serve as the world’s leading independent source of information and analysis on the G20. As scholars, the group accurately describes, explains and interprets what the G20 and its members do. As teachers and public educators, the group presents to the global community and G20 governments the results of its research and information about the G20. As citizens, the group fosters transparency and accountability in G20 governance, through assessments of G20 members’ compliance with their summit commitments and the connection between civil society and G20 governors. And as professionals, the group offers evidence-based policy advice about G20 governance, but does not engage in advocacy for or about the G20 or the issues it might address.

The G20 Research Group conducts research on the causes of summit and system performance and the G20’s relationship with the G7/8, BRICS, United Nations and other formal multilateral institutions. Working with the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), the G20 Research Group assesses each G20 member’s compliance with its previous summit priority commitments. Cumulative compliance reports are also compiled on key issues.

The G20 Research Group sends a field team to each summit to assist the world’s media, issue its own reports and analyses, allow students to witness world politics at the highest level at close hand, and collect the documents and artifacts uniquely to the summit to build the G20 archives at Trinity College’s John Graham Library.

The G20 Research Group is responsible for the G20 Information Centre at www.g20.utoronto.ca, a comprehensive permanent collection of material available online at no charge. It complements the G7 Information Centre, which houses publicly available archives on the G20 as well as the G7 and G8, and the BRICS Information Centre, as well as Newsdesk Media’s G7G20.com.

The G20 Research Group was founded in 2008 by Professor John Kirton, who is also the founder and director of the G7 Research Group, co-director of the BRICS Research Group and co-director of the Global Health Diplomacy Program, all based at Trinity College at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, where he is a professor of political science.

Lowy Institute for International Policy

The Lowy Institute is an independent, nonpartisan international policy think tank

located in Sydney, Australia. Ranked as Australia's leading think tank, it provides

high-quality research and distinctive perspectives on the international trends shaping

Australia and the world.

The Lowy Institute hosts speeches by leading national and international figures

and holds conferences to discuss key global issues. It aims to deepen the international

policy debate in Australia and to give Australia a greater voice on the international

stage.

G20 Studies Centre of the Lowy Institute

The G20 Studies Centre seeks to strengthen the effectiveness of the G20. It does

so by undertaking independent analytical research on global economic governance

issues and the role of the G20, and supporting research networks in Australia and

overseas. The Australian Government provided funding to establish the Centre.

The G20 Studies Centre produces quarterly G20 Monitors that bring together

opinions from Australia and around the world to discuss developments in the G20 and

suggest policy. It also provides regular commentary through the Lowy Institute’s

Interpreter blog and hosts events around themes of economic governance. For updates

Shanghai UN Research Association

Proposed by Ambassador Chen Jian, former UN Under-Secretary-General and

instructed by United Nations Association of China, the Shanghai UN Research

Association (SUNRA) is initiated and established by some distinguished scholars and

leading universities and academic institutions in Shanghai in 2013.

SUNRA aims to help consolidate and strengthen UN research in Shanghai,

promote the development and cooperation of UN agencies in Shanghai, and win over

more support from the UN and international organizations for the development of

Shanghai. The main activities of SUNRA are to coordinate and guide UN studies in

Shanghai, to assist and provide convenience to UN agencies for their activities in

China, and to offer consultation and service regarding UN issues for government and

society. SUNRA will attain these purposes through academic research, policy

consultation, professional training, and cultural communication.
