WHAT TO DO WITH ALL
OUR STUFF
In one of the Lutheran magazine articles, Diana
Dworin talks about how much clutter we accumulate in our
homes. Yes, toys and children’s clothes probably top the
list, but boxes and crates full of unused items and partially
working machines find space in the nook s and crannies of the garage and attic too. One doesn’t
realize it, but stuff can be a deterrent to a healthy spiritual life. As our belongings grow, our at-
tention is diverted from richer experiences and relationships in life. Many churches have devel-
oped charitable recycle programs to assist those who have overabundant lives give to others who
are in need of basic items.
Some families gain new attitudes about their possessions when they realize three important
facts. First, “wants” are not the same as “needs”. Parents give in to the begging child who wants
a new Barbie, but has three or four at home. As parents, encouraging children and practicing dis-
cernment between desires and necessities is crucial. Warm clothes and nutritious meals are “must
haves”, while Cheetos and a new purse to add to the stack in the closet are not. Secondly, we get
what we need, if faith guides our family prayer for abundance. The type of abundance He pro-
vides is daily bread, loving relationships, and patience. Knowing when we have “enough” is cru-
cial. Lastly, we need to remember that “stuff ” never lasts. Most stuff is unsatisfying ultimately.
The most fulfilling feeling is when we are able to share our belongings with those in need….a
loaf of home baked bread or a hand me down pair of jeans are needs that are appreciated by so
many who have less.
So thank you for your giving of “stuff ” to the church yard sale, and know that you are blessed
beyond measure as you clean out your garages and attics. Bless you as you practice simple abun-
dance within your family and home. Ranci, FCN
VOLUNETTERS DRIVERS NEEDED If you would be able to volunteer to transport shut-ins to church services and other church events please contact Randi Olson or Susie Beeck.

EVENING SERVICE OF
MEDITATION, PRAYER &
PEACE
Join us SUNDAY, July 8th and July

ers are offered as well. Join us at 5:30 PM.
WOMEN’S MINISTRY The BLCW have taken the summer off from quilting. How-ever, Lutheran World Relief is challenging us all to step up our efforts by 25 percent in 2013 in this LWR 2013 Quilt Campaign. This is at the request of the National Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Board. I’m not sure how much the increase is for our group but I will look at how many we sent off in 2012 and see what we can do. We have a great group of sewers and we will try out best to make more quilts. The largest problem for us is the cost of shipping these quilts. If anyone is interested in donating funds for this purpose we will be most grateful. Be-lieve it or not our supply of fabric is starting to dwindle dramatically. Where it used to take two closets to hold our supply of fabric, it is now in one closet.
We look forward to our fall start date of September 4 to resume our quilting. In case you have not read about it before - there isn’t a great talent to making these quilts. We cut squares any-where from 8-12 in. in size and sew them together and end up with a quilt. Doesn’t that sound simple??? Come join us in the fall and enjoy the fellowship and service.
The Good News Girls, a Bible Study Group meets July 26 at the church for a Taco Salad Lunch. The topic “Food For The Journey.” The theme verse is Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you. I Kings 19:7b

Rwanda Mission Update Rummage Sale and Quarterly Funds Transferred to Kibungo, Rwanda
Good news; with more than 30 Bethlehem members
devoting approximately 300 hours of their time to the
2nd Annual Kibungo Rummage Sale a total of
$1,916.49 in donations were collected because of your
efforts! And now... a very hearty Thank You to those that participated by donating salable items, working
tirelessly in our effort to aid our brothers and sister in
continuing to build their sanctuary into a reality of
having a formal place of worship.
A grand total of $3,675.09 is now being sent to the Si-
erra Pacific Synod for transfer to Kibungo, Rwanda.
This amount includes:
• $1,869.09 net amount received from the rummage sale (the remaining $47.40 will be sent next quar-
ter)
• $690.00 in matching funds in support of the rummage sale which was received from the Auburn
Chapter of Thrivent; Thank you Auburn Chapter of Thrivent for Lutherans! The Auburn Chapter
of Thrivent for Lutherans has supported this mission for two consecutive years as a sign of their
appreciation to our global community outreach.
• $676.00 from the “Pennies for Kibungo” campaign led by our Director of Children’s Ministry, Miss
Kathye Hamm and the children of Bethlehem Lutheran. You may have noticed the beautifully dec-
orated jars and the smiling faces that collected pennies as you exited the sanctuary. These jars were
designed by Miss Kathye Hamm and made by the children of Bethlehem. This project was another
example of how our parish supported the Rwanda Mission! Including the $60.00 of pennies sent to
Kibungo last fall, there is a grand total of $736.00. Way to go Bethlehem, you are truly supporting
the Rwanda Mission!
• $190.00 collected from the sale of banana fiber art and card products
• $250.00 for BLC's quarterly support of our sister-congregation (Note: $125.00 will be taken from
the other funds to makeup BLC’s $375 quarterly support commitment for sister-congregation in
Kibungo. Their building fund will receive $3,300.09 for this quarter.)
We’d like to thank Deborah Spignola for her dedicated service to the Rwanda mission, who recently re-
signed her position, and is now pursuing a new spiritual journey; thank you Debbie for your service to
Bethlehem Lutheran and to our global mission. Tia Desplancke is now replacing Deborah. As the
Rwanda mission team looks to the future, we invite anyone interested in being a part of this team to
consider this ministry. Our mission is to act locally and think globally.

NEWS FROM THE GATHERING INN
A New Era
These past few weeks I have attended several graduations as ele-
mentary moves to middle school, middle school to high school,
high school to college and college to the work force. It reminds me
that over the past 30 months TGI has had over 350 graduating
guests to housing, to the work force, to go back to school or to
permanently disability. All of this is a tribute to our staff and a job
well done in fulfilling our motto “a hand up not a hand out”. On
behalf of the board I want to extend to our staff a big “THANK
YOU” for their many hours invested in helping move our guests back into the world and leave be-
hind their homelessness.
This spring several of the board members have been visiting our long time sponsors
and thanking them for all their support. We have pointed out that over the past five years the min-
istry has expanded services and the amount of guests we see and care for on a daily basis. Our
budget was only $320,000 five years ago, but today it is over double that amount at $660,000. We
continue to grow our services by providing a medical clinic, a clothes closet, ICP housing, re-
source center and soon to open dental clinic along with counseling services and transportation to
various services provided at The DeWitt Center in Auburn.
We have asked each of our long time sponsors to consider doubling their annual support
of TGI and I am asking each individual donor to consider the same at this time. I know that these
past few years have had economic challenges for many of us and I personally want to thank all
that have faithfully given to help support TGI. Time and time again I have witnessed GOD’s hand
in the day to day operations of TGI and how He continues to provide to continue this work.
God bless,
Wayne Mains —- President, Board of Directors

Summertime Stress Slowing You Down? We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts, struggles, crises, and problems don't take a vacation. Many times our difficulties seem even worse during the summer because everyone else seems to be enjoy-ing life while you are feeling down. If you are experiencing a difficult time--emotionally, spiritually, or relationally--you don't have to suffer alone. Our Ste-phen Ministers are trained caregivers, ready to listen, care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and provide one-to-one Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing. Men are matched with male Stephen
Ministers and women are matched with female Stephen Ministers. It's free. It's confidential. And it will make a difference in your life!
To find out more about Stephen Ministry for you or someone you know, talk with one of
our Stephen Ministry Leaders: Pastor Bryon, Joy Johnson, Susan Christensen, Joe Irvin, or Jo Reid.
Ever Thought about Becoming a Stephen Minister? We will be training another class of Ste-phen Ministers in the fall We will combine our class with a class from Sierra Grace Church in Au-burn and the training will begin in September or October through February or March. Stephen Ministers work alongside our pastors to care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual sup-port to people who are going through a difficult time, such as divorce, grief, hospitalization, un-employment, terminal illness, relocation, chronic illness, or loneliness. If you have gifts for caring, encouragement, and listening, please begin to prayerfully consider whether you might want to be part of this exciting ministry. If you think you might be interested, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders: Susan Christensen, Joe Irvin and Jo Reid.

Look
around you next Saturday or Sunday in church, or for that matter where ever
you are right now. So many shapes sizes, colors, passions, abilities. Above
all are all blessed with an ability to create. We can create quilts, music, cup-
cakes, wealth, a living, smiles, children, goodwill, buildings, art…the list goes
on and on and is so divers it makes life exciting. All of this diversity and
ability is a wonderful gift from God. He does not ask much in return for
these gifts simply; Love one another and share your gifts among one anoth-
er. Talk about leading by example, God shared himself with us through Jesus and gave the world
salvation through that gift of grace. Don’t hide or hoard your talents, treasures or time. These are
beautiful gifts that shine and grow as they are shared with each other, our community, our won-
derful congregation and ultimately our world.

A Note From the President In April at the BLC congregation Council approved Continuing Resolutions (C/Rs) for the Bap-
tismal Covenant (B/C) organizational structure. Actually the structure has been around for sev-
eral years, but never formalized. Council then worked on transferring leadership positions to the
new teams and filling vacancies. We are pleased to announce the following team leaders:
B/C Teams Team Leaders Council Liaison
Life Together Susan Christiansen & Karen Stein Christie Sonmez
Worship Vacant Diane Allison
Evangelism Ruth Dugan* Terry Mornin
Service Linda Greenlee* Laura Hasse
Justice Christie Sonmez Inga Henderson
*Appointed on an interim basis.
Support Teams Team Leaders Council Liaison
Thanks-Giving Kevin Hamm Jaron Latona
Facilities Tom Larson Don Schultze
Administration Joy Johnson Don Schultze
The above organization was developed to incorporate the five Baptismal Covenant affirmations
as found in the Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal. With the structure focused on the B/C affir-
mations, the team leaders will be overseeing the 50+ existing church ministries. The function of
the existing ministries will not change; however, we hope the new structure will improve coordi-
nation with the church Council and provide better budget input and fiscal controls. Bottom line,
we believe God is calling us to focus on our role to be a missional congregation.
The BLC website has been updated to include the new C/Rs. Go to: http://
www.bethlehemlutheranauburn.org/, the pathway is: Resources / BLC Constitution / "Click
Here to view our Continuing Resolutions".
Council Liaisons and Team Leaders are now busy with their various ministries to get written de-
scriptions which will be included on the website. The intent is to make it easier to learn what each
ministry is about. We are encouraging greater involvement in your area of interest.
I continue to be amazed and truly thankful for all the dedicated and hard-working BLC ministry
leaders, they are the heart and soul of this congregation. Don Schultze, President
