The Basilica of Saint Peter is located within the Vatican City.

It occupies a "unique position" as one of the holiest sites and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom“

In Catholic tradition, it is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus

While St. Peter's is the most famous of Rome's many churches, it is not the first in rank, an honor held by the Pope's cathedral church

The present arrangement was constructed between 1656 and 1667

Colosseum

Colosseum, RomeConstruction started between 70 and 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Titus

Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles

It has been estimated that about 500,000 people and over a million wild animals died in the Colosseum games
