Baron Eduard Alexandrowitsch von Falz-Fein
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, honoured Numismatists and Enthusiasts of
Russian History!
I am very glad to be able to use this opportunity, which has been kindly
granted to me in light of an exceptional event in Russian numismatics, to
address you in this foreword.
A unique and very comprehensive collection of several thousand Russian
coins, that have been collected with meticulous care and great knowledge, as
well as with a patriotic love for Russia, will come to auction in the near future
through SINCONA AG in Zurich.
I allow myself to hope that these auctions will become an enrichment of
cultural life and will benefit the promotion of interest in the history of Russia.
The once in a lifetime chance is given that precious items removed from
Russia in the 20th century will now find their way back into their homeland.
Russia has a moving, fascinating and glorious history. May these auctions and
the possibilities connected with them serve as a new bridge between the
historic past, the dynamic present and the blooming future of our beloved
Russia.
The inclined collector, enthusiast and patriot has the opportunity to purchase a
small, but not unimportant portion of Russias history and to contribute that
this heritage will not be forgotten.
I, myself, was born in the year 1912, exactly in the year of the 100th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812.
With my 99 years I see the glorious past of Russia, but also her grandiose future. In this year, my 100th year of life, Russia
celebrates the 200 year jubilee of the Battle of Borodino and the war of that time. This is a memorable occasion and gives the
opportunity to remember our history from its roots.
I congratulate SINCONA AG and its team for these wonderful auctions and advise all collectors, dealers and historically
interested friends of numismatics: Use this unique opportunity to purchase a small portion of Russian history for yourselves
and visit these auctions in the beautiful town of Zurich.
I wish all much success and happiness in your passion and send my heartfelt greetings to all friends and acquaintances in
Russia!
Your
Baron Eduard Alexandrowitsch von Falz-Fein

I. V. Shiryakov Head of Numismatics
State Historic Museum
Moscow
I am grateful to the numismatic firm of SINCONA AG for providing me
the opportunity this spring to view the remarkable collection of Russian
coins that they will offer in their coming Russian auctions. It is not an
overstatement to describe this collection nowadays as unique. It is
unfortunately, probably the last private collection, that has been collected
in the spirit of classical (or museum) tradition, when coins were selected
not for their rarity or beauty alone, but in order to achieve the maximum
completeness of a collection.
The collection covers coins of a wide time span: from the pre-Petrine era
to the first Soviet issues. Early, individual coins from the collection
belong to the turn of the 14th-15th century; some coins to the middle and
the second half of the 15th century; hundreds of coins to the 16th and 17th
centuries. But coins from pre-Petrine Russia were apparently not so
interesting to the collector, whose main interest was the regular coinage
of the Russian Empire. There are thousands of them in this collection.
The beginning of the collectors activity, which has given life to a unique
collection, obviously falls in the first 1,5 to 2 decades after the Second
World War. At this time many Russian coins that had been taken to foreign countries during the Russian Revolution and Civil
War started to enter the market outside of Russia. Also many had been bought at sales of surplus stock of Russian museums
during the 1920s and 1930s. Many collectors who had valued these coins as relics of the past were not alive anymore in the
1950s and their heirs, who had lost touch with the motherland, began to treat them only as a source of personal prosperity. At
that time interest in coins in Soviet Russia could lead to prison. Only the foreign expert and connoisseur of Russian coins in
the West was able to form a collection in the tradition of the great Russian numismatists of the 19th/20th century such as Grand
Duke George Mikhailovich (1863-1919), Count I. I. Tolstoy (1858-1916), P. V. Zubov (1862-1921) and A. A. Ilyin (1858-
1942), that they would have been proud of. The collectors program, which seems to have become impracticable today, was
realized by one person about half a century ago.
Coins that are now in SINCONA AGs consignment will obviously please the participants of its future auctions.

2012, 2013 and the following two years will be landmarks in numismatic history. The
unique Sincona Collection that encompasses about 9000 Russian silver and copper
coins the last of the great collections of the past and the greatest collection of Russian
coins created in the 20th century will be sold in four auctions. There will be nothing
similar on the market in the predictable future.
Unique collection The Sincona Collection is a collection of exceptional completeness, fine condition and
coins of faultless provenance. Some examples give an idea of the collections
sophistication: the immensely rare 1894 rouble of Alexander III the large head which is
not to be found in any museum of the world; the most rare 1704 pattern rouble of Peter I
with the collectors mark of Count Emmerich Hutten-Czapski; the pattern rouble of Ioann
Antonovich; the fullest selection of pattern roubles of Alexander I, Nicolaus I, Alexander II
and Alexander III in private possession. Along with the greatest rarities the collection
contains not less than 300 coins in proof quality. It was collected over decades in regard to
date and die variety and will appear at auction entirely, in its original form.
Unique event Russian numismatic history has known no comparable collection on the market like the Sincona Collection since 1917. One
recalls the great collections of past years: Irving Goodman (1700 coins), Gerhard Heiberg (1700 coins), the Renaissance
collection (1000 coins). The unprecedented and singular event of the appearance of about 6500 silver and 2500 copper coins, many
of a museum rarity level and condition and assured authenticity will define the prices of the numismatic market anew. In the years to
come the Sincona sales will be perceived as a fantastic chance. Dont miss it!
Unique opportunity The auction The Sincona Collection - Part 1 was a tremendous success. The most valuable russian coin ever the 1740 pattern
rouble of Ioann Antonovich was sold on October 9, 2012 for 3600 000 Swiss Francs (3825'000 Dollars). On November 7, 1968
this very coin was sold for 20'500 Swiss Francs (4750 Dollars) in the Hess/Leu auction 39, lot 122. The price increase in Dollars
was 800 times and in the most stable currency of the world the Swiss Franc 175 times.
The forthcoming Sincona auctions are also an exclusive chance both for numismatists and investors. I would also like to thank all the
other collectors who have consigned their most interesting and valuable Russian coins and medals into this unique auction. These
additional items you will find in a special part at the end of this auction catalogue.
I wish all auction participants success and pleasure at these sales.

The rarest variant of the rare type small head in outstanding quality and probably the best known specimen. A cabinet piece. Since Bitkin has no illustration of the reverse and gives the note I&T, 27 (8 roubles), we assume that the coin was not available to Bitkin and he included it in his catalogue because of the 1910 Iljin&Tolstoy catalogue where it appears under 27. Thus this coin was considered reported, not confirmed until it appeared in this catalogue.
