The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) is a joint effort by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) in partnership with local Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and reflects Singapore’s continued commitment to the maritime industry. The SMI develops strategies and programmes to achieve its mission with key focus areas in sectors such as port, shipping and maritime services.

The SMI charts the maritime research strategy together with the various maritime institutes at the local IHLs. Working together with knowledge partners to attract renowned academia and researchers, the grooming of the next generation local maritime talents is a critical component towards a sustainable R&D ecosystem in Singapore. The SMI also promotes greater industry-academia R&D collaborations to be undertaken in Singapore.

As a Whole-of-Government approach, the agencies work together in initiatives driven through the SMI. The formation of the SMI will strengthen Singapore’s research manpower and capabilities as a global maritime knowledge hub to enhance the overall positioning and competitiveness of the maritime industry.

SMI will be establishing maritime research Centres of Excellence (CoEs) within the Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) to deepen research expertise and capabilities and foster stronger industry-academia collaborations.

Through the maritime research CoEs, SMI will develop and sustain niche maritime R&D capabilities and also accelerate translation of research outcomes into impactful industry applications and innovative solutions in the port and maritime sectors. A sustainable pool of research talent and manpower will also be anchored within the maritime research CoEs for a vibrant innovation ecosystem. This supports Maritime Singapore as a global maritime knowledge hub through research and technology.

Maritime research CoEs will be established in key R&D areas such as:

Maritime Environment & Energy

International Engagement

SMI Activities

As part of SMI’s efforts to advance research capabilities and raise the profile of Singapore as an international maritime knowledge hub, SMI engages and collaborates with overseas research organisations.

Each year, SMI leads a delegation of public researchers to visit and engage established research organisations worldwide to facilitate cross-border knowledge exchange in maritime research and technology.

These are the countries that SMI has visited/engaged:

• The Netherlands • Germany• France• Norway• Finland• United Kingdom

We look forward to engaging partners from more countries to strengthen our expertise and knowledge in the maritime industry.

• United States of America• Russia • China• Japan• South Korea • South Africa

SMI FORUM A key annual event attended by some 250 senior executives from the maritime industry and research community. In addition to discussions on global trends and developments, new SMI initiatives are typically announced at the annual SMI Forum.

SMI SEMINAR Taking place in conjunction with the annual Singapore Maritime Week since 2014, the SMI Seminar has attracted some 150 global and local delegates each year to discuss interests and opportunities in long-term R&D areas.

SMI BREAKFAST SERIES Regular breakfast seminars are held throughout the year to foster greater interaction between the industry and academia over a less formal setting. Selected research topics are shared and discussed over coffee and breakfast with first-hand preview of existing and upcoming R&D trends and initiatives.

SMI R&D WORKSHOPS / FOCUS GROUPSEstablishing in-depth research dialogues among technical and mid-management representatives, SMI conducts several sessions each year to gather inputs and validation towards planned thematic R&D programmes and initiatives.

SMI RESEARCH SHOWCASE The SMI Research Showcase is held bi-annually to feature and raise the profile of maritime research projects led by academic research performers. Top projects are awarded and may be featured in relevant publications and media platforms. These top projects from the bi-annual Research Showcase will also be eligible to participate in the SMI Awards held biennially. The SMI Awards ceremony presents the “Best Research Project” and “Best Researcher” where both categories are awarded with prizes.
