Services to improve
safeguard and “preventive and
planned conservation” of cultural heritage1. CH as strategic asset
to be preserved and valued
2. Cultural properties are particular fragile
due to its use & exposure
3. Deterioration of Cultural properties results in economical damages
4. Preventive and planned conservation of CH needs new
tools to assure the effective and systematic assessment and
monitoring of sites

SAR data in ArTeK
5La Missione COSMO-SkyMed: Stato dell’Arte, Applicazioni e Prospettive Future
ArTeK uses both HR (Sentinel-1) and VHR (COSMO-SkyMed) SAR data to perform the following analysis types
1. Land/Monuments displacements measurement, through:• PS technique• SBAS technique
2. Change detection maps generation to:• Put in evidence changes occurred during dangerous events (e.g. flooding, seismic shocks)• Analyze changes occurred in the territory (e.g. illegal building detection)
Using coherence maps analysis, backscattering amplitude comparison, etc.
3. Ship activities analysis over underwater archaeological park• By using ship detection algorithms (e.g. CFAR)• By comparison with AIS data

Tre Esedre: Steps after PS analysis
14La Missione COSMO-SkyMed: Stato dell’Arte, Applicazioni e Prospettive Future
According to ArTeK protocol following steps will be performed in the near future:
1. On site survey and inspection to identify elements potentially affected by detected displacements• UAV survey activation for inspection of higher parts of the monument• Damage assessment according to the MiBACT/ISCR Carta del Rischio Methodology
2. On site sensors (e.g. crack‐meters, GNSS receivers, inclinometers, accelerometers) deployment to monitor criticalities identified in step 1
After satellite PS analysis and comparison with already obtained results the “Tre Esedre” monument has been detected as “potentially in danger”.

H COSMO‐SkyMed constellationStrengths and Weaknesses for CH monitoring
• Weaknesses• Low prices available only through institution intermediation or ASI/ESA projects• Low spatial coverage of Spotlight‐2 data: long datasets available only through
selected time span in specific areas• Not always useful for interferometry
• Presence of “holes” into archive data series, probably due to satellite acquisition plan changes. It prevents from the analysis of a consecutive data stack
22La Missione COSMO-SkyMed: Stato dell’Arte, Applicazioni e Prospettive Future
• Strengths• High national stripmap HI coverage thanks to «map Italy» program• Very high resolution available (better than 1 meter)• Tasking capabilities

Recommendations for future generations of satellites
• To plan acquisitions of CSG also aiming at complementarity with already available CSK satellites, thus allowing interferometry through CSK and CSG
• To plan quad pol acquisition over Italy at defined time span, like Map Italy program for CSK
