For over fifty years, we

are a community that

supports one another in

times of need, celebrates

the joys of life, prays,

and learns within a

Reform Jewish congre-

gation. We are fortunate

to have outstanding mu-

sic for Shabbat, High Holy days, and festi-

val services. Our preschool prepares our

children to excel in elementary school and

beyond. Our religious school gives our stu-

dents Judaic knowledge and a love for Ju-

daism. We have meaningful Bar/Bat Mitz-

vah services and dynamic youth groups for

teens. For our adults, we have ongoing lec-

tures and educational opportunities along

with an active Brotherhood and Sisterhood.

Social action and caring for others is prac-

ticed year round and we also have creative

holiday and worship experiences.

Life-long friendships are made here.

Knowledge is deepened as we find meaning

in Jewish tradition and take joy in seeing

our values passed down, l’dor v’dor, from

generation to generation.

In the Torah, our people desired to build a

miskan, a sanctuary, where they could come

together and worship God. Moses asked for

anyone, yedvenu lebo, whose heart moved

them, to contribute to the building of the

mishkan. The Israelites stepped forward

and gave to the best of their ability. Moses

ended up having more than enough to build

our people’s first house of worship. The an-

cient Israelites provide us with a model of

how people can take an active role in their

community.

We are blessed at Temple Beth David

with members who give of their resources

and time to make our synagogue a home

where Judaism flourishes. We all have dif-

ferent strengths and gifts to contribute to

our community. We welcome you, regard-

less of the level of contribution you can

make. We value you as a person and hope

that you will become active in our commu-

nity and find belonging within our Temple

family.

For those of you already connected, con-

sider passing this information on to your

friends and family. We look forward to

growing our congregation with people with

good hearts and minds.

As the rabbi of Temple Beth David since

2004, I, along with our dedicated lay lead-

ers and staff, thank you for choosing Tem-

ple Beth David.

Hey TBD youth, I’m talking to you (and your parents, and anyone else who is interested). If you are going to be in grades 9-12 next year, and you have an interest in social justice, listen to this! TBD is planning to attend, for the very first time, the L’Taken Social Justice Seminar in Washington, D.C. this coming January 5-8, 2018. What is this you may ask? It is an opportunity for our TBD high school students to meet with over 2000 other Temple youth from around the country and to study and discuss different social justice issues which the Religious Action Center (“RAC”) and the Union for Reform Judaism (“URJ”) will present. The students will pick the topic they feel most passionate about, and will make a presentation to a member of Congress about it. Yeah, you read that last part right. A member of Congress. What an amazing opportunity! Please click this link for more information on the L’Taken Seminar. http://www.rac.org/what-ltaken

It is my goal to see a group from TBD attend the Seminar this year, and hopefully every year thereafter. What better way to keep our TBD youth engaged and passionate about our Jewish value of tikkun olam than by having them participate in a living, breathing social justice activity. They will also have an enriching Washington, D.C. experience to boot, and will get to know other Jewish youth from around the

country who share their passions. This will be something truly memorable for our youth. Just listen to what past participants have said about the L’Taken Seminar at this Youtube link. Through the generous funding of the Temple Beth David Foundation and the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County, we have some limited funding available to help supplement the seminar and travel costs for this year. I am, of course, hopeful to secure more funding (and even donations of airline miles for our youth would be welcome). Please contact Edie if you would like more information about this opportunity.

This month's article is a report on the World Union for Progressive Judaism's (WUPJ) Convention called Connection's 2017 that was held in Jerusalem at Beit Shmuel on the Hebrew Union College Campus in Jerusalem and the extra week Cathy and I spent in Israel. It was a busy convention attended by 450 delegates from over 30 nations. Here are some of the highlights. But first you should know that all the written prayers we were given were inserted into the "Western Wall". We arrived late Monday night, May 15, and attended the two day seminar on Religion & State concerning democracy and pluralism in Israel hosted by the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) and run by the Anita Saltz Education Center. It was the last two days of a five day course for lawyers and for us it began with a visit to the Supreme Court. The building is a beautiful modern structure with spectacular views of Jerusalem and located in the same area as the Knesset. We were fortunate to sit in on a court hearing with 9 justices present including the woman who is Chief Justice. Lesser cases are handled by smaller panels. The case in question was brought by IRAC and concerned the acceptance of conversions to Judaism conducted by non-Orthodox rabbis. It had been heard earlier and the government was there to report progress. The government attorney wanted more time since the Knesset was considering legislation. It was a long standing case and the Court was not sympathetic to the reasons presented for an extension. Since the proceeding and arguments were in Hebrew, we had to read much into the tone and body language. The government was getting no sympathy from all but one judge, and the IRAC side was being treated sympathetically, even with some laughter. The government will be ordered to present their arguments shortly so that the case can be settled. We finished our visit at a meeting with Justice Salim Jourban, an Arab Christian, and the only non-Jew on the court. He answered questions freely and even invited the group to see his office and told us of

his daughter in Chicago. We next visited the Knesset and during lunch we were briefed by three members of the Knesset, MK Ksenia Svetlova of Zionist Union, MK Micahal Biran, also Zionist Union, and MK Tamar Zandberg of Meretz. Zionist Union is a combination of Labor and Zippi Livni's Party, both are progressives as is Meretz. MK Smetlova was in her first term and the youngest Knesset member and described her learning curve and progressive views which were both "pessimistic and realistic". She is intelligent, very animated, and probably has a bright future. MK Biran decried the recent retreat of social service across the nation. MK Zandberg compared the richness of Jewish life in the US and Israel and was not pleased by the restrictions imposed by Israel's Chief Rabbis. We heard from the IRAC litigators who covered racism, free speech, and hate crimes. We finished the day in the office of a lawyer friend of IRAC with snacks and cocktails, and a very special view of southern and eastern Jerusalem from his fifth story office balcony in an impressive 1930's office building. The seminar closed the next morning with a sessions on immigration and refugees and one on gender segregation in the public sphere. It was interesting to meet and hear from the attorneys who litigate the cases, so often written about in this column. The full convention got underway the next day with a Thursday Shacharit service at the egalitarian prayer area and a Bnot Mitzvah Torah readings by 13 South American women who were never afforded the opportunity of a Bat Mitzvah, although they had all become Jewish community leaders. The service was followed by a procession carrying the Torah scroll to the open area of the Kotel outside the women's prayer area where there was a reading and singing. There was no action by the other worshipers, or the

There was no action by the other worshipers, or the police. That was followed by site visits to Israel-in-action facilities. Cathy visited a school and I went to Kibbutz Gezer to hear Miri Gold about being the first Reform Rabbi to be government funded; the result of a 7 year court battle. There was also a discussion with a Bedouin community leader about progress in relations with his community. I finished with a session led by academics on population dynamics that pointed out the necessity of a two state solution, and the likelihood of a decreased Haredi population growth rate. It is based on the fact the women are better educated than the men in all but Torah. They are becoming the bread winners as well as running the households. On Friday we began with a plenary about the WUPJ success in developing leaders and building communities. It was followed by a workshop on the Progressive Community and the Orthodox Community in Israel, about which I try frequently to provide information, and in South Africa, Germany, and Brazil. The stories were similar in that government funding is provided, but the Orthodox community controls the distribution of the funds and looks down on the Progressive Jews. There was a plenary about inspiring the next generation. The emphasis was on courage, creativity, urgency. I attended a session on Lehava, a hate group of young men who are encouraged to attack Arabs on the premise that they are trying to date Jewish girls. I'll write more about them in a future article. I also attended a session on how to discuss Israel issues in a respectful manner. We had our Erev Shabbat service at the restored old train station and went to home hospitality for Shabbat dinner with a Jerusalem family. The morning service is always interesting because the Hebrew is translated in the siddur and read in the languages of the nations represented, English, Spanish, Russian, French, German, Dutch, and Brazilian Portuguese. On the Shabbat afternoon tour, I went on a tour led by

a Jewish teacher of Christianity in the Old City, and Cathy went on one seeing Jerusalem through the eyes of the youth. We closed with dinner and Havdala in Blaustein Hall which overlooks what is probably the city's best view of the Old City. The next week we visited Tel Aviv and Haifa, including the very modern Hecht museum in Haifa University at the highest point of the Carmel Ridge. We had dinner in the Galilee with Rabbi, Dr. Marc Rosenstein who just retired as dean of the Israel Reform Rabbi Program at HUC in Jerusalem. He would be an excellent scholar in residence. We finished the week with a short visit to see how Beersheva on the edge of the Negev Desert has grown. We saw the growth of Ben Gurion University and the newly developed high tech center which is a joint project of the University and private industry. It was spearheaded by Jim Breslauer from Long Beach, an active Federation member. I hope something above has interested you in Israel and that you will check out the information that will be coming out shortly about the Temple's Israel trip next spring. Charlie Niederman

To Our Temple Beth David Family:

As most of you are aware, our Temple depends on donations to deliver the high quality of

services to all of you. We understand that many of you are still struggling with the recent

economic downturn. However, we have come up with a way that will allow you to donate to

the Temple without spending a penny of your own money, plus you will actually save money

on many purchases that you normally make!

We would like to introduce you to Goodshop and Goodsearch. Goodshop works with more

than 5,000 stores that will provide all of you with discounts on what you normally buy and then

will donate up to 20% of the purchase price to the Temple. You will simply click on a link on

the Temple Home Page, start saving money for your family and help the Temple out as

well! We have included an easy step-by-step signup guide with this letter. Here are some

examples of companies that participate in the program:

Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sears, Sak’s, Apple, Old Navy, the Gap, Amazon,

Office Depot, Petco, Staples, Dell, The Limited, Holiday Inn, Groupon, Levi’s, Lands End,

Best Buy, 1-800 Flowers, 24 Hour Fitness, and Victoria’s Secret.

These are companies that we all normally shop at, and by simply clicking on the link on the

Temple website, you will be saving money for your family and actually raising money for the

Temple. In addition, you can also save money by dining out at participating restaurants and, at

the same time, raising donations for the Temple as well. It’s simple, free and easy to use, and

the average family using the site over a year will actually raise more than $350 annually for the

Temple. Multiply that by our 300 families and we will raise more than $100,000 per year for

the Temple! This program really works. Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for

charitable organizations with this program.

Likewise, we are also rolling out Goodsearch. By doing your internet searches through

Goodsearch.com, which links with Yahoo, the Temple will receive a penny for every internet

search. If you can imagine how many internet searches you do, and your families do, this will

also add up to real money for the Temple.

We encourage all of you to participate and to help strengthen our Temple for all of us and for

the generations to come.

With best regards,

Neil Kornswiet Eric Schiffer Nancy Meyers
