Shalom and Todah Rabbi Stephen Grundfast

This June bulletin article marks my final message to

you as rabbi of Beth El Congregation. As of this summer

I will have served the congregation for thirteen years, so,

I guess, you could call this my Bar Mitzvah year in

Akron.

When one celebrates their Bar or Bat Mitzvah they receive presents

from relatives and friends. I have received many presents from you over

these past thirteen years and now it’s my turn to say Todah Rabbah, thank

you, for allowing me to serve you and the Akron Jewish community.

With your support, I was able to create new and innovative

programming for the synagogue. We tried a few things that were very

successful while others had a very short shelf life. I’ll always appreciate

your encouragement as we traveled together on behalf of the congregation

and the Jewish people.

I am proud to have been an integral part in our successful move to the

disabilities for fourteen years. She was a Board Member of Beth El, President of Na’Amat (Pioneer Women), and a life member of Hadassah and B’nai B’rith Women. She and her husband Don are well known for their philanthropic generosity to the Akron community.

Rochelle Stone is one of the most well-known Akron volunteers. She was the first female president of Beth El, as well as President of the Akron chapter of Hadassah, Jewish Family Service, Women’s Board of Children’s Hospital and Mobile Meals. Rochelle was also on the boards of the Jewish Community Board of Akron, Interfaith Caregivers, The Lippman School, Akron Interfaith Council, and supported many other community organizations. Rochelle and her husband, Dr. Robert Stone, are both highly regarded for their service to Beth El and the Akron community-at-large. For reservations, call 330-835-0005.

On Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 7:00 pm, Israel Bonds, will host a tribute event honoring Sarah Greenblatt at a dessert reception She is being recognized for her years of service as a dedicated teacher to so many students in the Akron Jewish community from kindergarten through adulthood, Sarah has been teaching Hebrew and Judaics at the Lippman School for 39 years, formerly serving as the Director of Hebrew and Judaics for 34 years. Sarah has written and directed the Lippman School musical for 35 years. Her teaching also includes b’nai mitzvah training. Each bar and bat mitzvah is a true simcha for her, as she has now proudly trained countless students at all three Akron area synagogues. She is an active lay leader and member of the staff at Beth El Congregation, serves on the Beth El board, president of Beth El Sisterhood, led the Ritual Committee, serves as Gabbai, and was on the search committee for Beth El’s new clergy. As a member of the Women’s Chevra Kadisha, Sarah is part of a dedicated group of women that perform this important mitzvah of caring for the recently deceased prior to burial. She has travelled to Israel 28 times, leading 19 trips with students, and lived there on a kibbutz and in Jerusalem. Sarah has seen firsthand how Israel Bonds strengthen every aspect of Israel’s economy. This event is especially meaningful to Sarah because it not only supports Israel, it is a legacy from her grandparents, Simon and Dena Bricklin, of blessed memory, who were honored by Israel Bonds in Philadelphia fifty years ago. Sarah is married to Erwin Greenblatt. Call 216-454-0180 for reservations.

The month of June is clearly a time to celebrate all of these dedicated individuals who have served Beth El and Akron with their service. What great models for all of us to emulate.

My best,

Harvey

Notes

Our busy school year has come to a

close! Some of our highlights have

included learning with Shay, our

Shaliach, spending time being

gastronomically Jewish with holiday

foods, and working on Shabbat

morning prayers. Our Sunday School

Classes also had a great year learning

about the Jewish holidays though art,

stories, and songs. Many thanks to

Andrea Rabinovitz, Morgan

Domokos, Leora Cohen, Sarah

Greenblatt, and Judy Grundfast for all

they did during the year! Next year

will bring new excitement and

opportunities for collaboration with

the greater community.

JCC. May the relationship grow ever stronger over the years.

While I wish I could personally thank each of you, there are a few people that stand out. The first is

Hazzan Stein who was the best cantor a rabbi could ask for. He was so wonderful that we decided to become

in-laws. Well, I guess that one was done for us.

I’ll remember fondly working with Barbara Good and how dedicated she was to the congregation and to me.

Thank you to the presidents of Beth El whom I worked with over the years. Each had a unique style of

leadership but what they had in common was and is their love of Beth El. Thank you to Randy Cohen, Alice

Schneider, Steve Newman, Gary Rosen, Andrea Steinberger, Marty Oppenheimer and our current president,

Harvey Sterns. May they go from strength to strength.

A warm thank you to Laurel Gress for her skills that enhance the sacredness of our Shabbat and Yom

Tov Services.

And finally, a very special and heartfelt Todah Rabbah to Erin Katz Ford for her enthusiastic and

passionate work she does every day for our congregation. I truly enjoyed the time that we worked together.

She was my sounding board, compassionate critic and partner in serving the members of the congregation.

She is truly a one of a kind and Beth El is fortunate to have her as an integral part of the community.

Thank you for the unqualified love and support from my family throughout the years of my rabbinate.

Judy has been with me from the beginning, first as a struggling rabbinical student and then through almost

four decades in the pulpit. None of this would have been possible without her.

To my children, Rachel and Justin and Joe and Deana, and grandsons, Gavi and Elliot – you enrich my

life beyond measure.

May God continue to send blessings upon each of you and may the future be bright for Beth El and the

Akron Jewish community.
