CHURCH OF THE SACRED HEART February 17, 2019
Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time
NOTE FROM The Pastor
Dear Parishioners,
On October 31, 1618, Mariana de Jesus
de Paredes was born in the city of Quito, in
current-day Ecuador. She was the youngest of
eight children. Mariana was orphaned at the
age of seven, and then her older sister,
Jeronima, who had already married, took her
into her home. Mariana developed a passion
for the contemplative life from an early age
and her sister and brother-in-law respected
her desire to live in seclusion in their house.
Mariana spent all day in prayer at home
and also spent much time in the local church
praying before the Blessed Sacrament. As her
spiritual life developed, her instinct toward
self-denial heightened and a local Jesuit
priest, Juan Camacho, served as her spiritual
director.
Mar iana ’s aus te r i t y became
miraculous. She received Holy Communion
every day but she ate only an ounce of food
every eight to 10 days. Normally, this level of
subsistence would prove fatal. But Mariana
was sustained by the Holy Spirit, who
inspired other saints to a similar level of
mortification, for instance, Catherine of Siena
and Rose of Lima.
Mariana became a great mystic. She
was able to accurately predict the future, read
people’s minds and hearts, and heal the sick
by making the Sign of the Cross or by
sprinkling holy water on them. There was
even a well-documented case detailing how
her prayers restored a dead person to life.
Before long, the reputation of Mariana spread
far and wide.
In 1645, there was a great earthquake
in Quito. The city became a haven for
disease. A priest was preaching his homily at
Mass and prayed aloud, “My God, I offer you
my life so that the earthquakes will end.” But
Mariana, by divine impulse, rushed forward
and cried out, “No Lord, the life of this priest
is necessary to save many souls, but I am not
necessary … I offer you my life to stop these
earthquakes.” The very next day the health of
Mariana began to fail. Shortly thereafter, on
May 26, 1645, she died. She was only 27
years old.
On the day she died, a miracle was
reported. Her dead body dripped blood on the
dirt floor and a pure white lily—a perfect
flower—sprouted from her blood, blossomed,
and bloomed for everyone to see.
Consequently, she became known as the Lily
of Quito. She was canonized by Pope Pius
XII on June 4, 1950. She is the patron saint of
those with bodily ills, people rejected by
religious orders, and those who lose their
parents, especially while children.
What strikes us modern Christians
about the life of Saint Mariana is that she
achieved great holiness by a simple, but very
prayerful life, mastering her passions and her
sinfulness to become a pure soul. While she is
most known for the extraordinary,
supernatural aspects of her spiritual life, these
dynamics emerged only toward the end of her
earthly journey. Mariana became a saint by
doing what you and I are able to do daily
through the Grace of God given in the
Sacraments, namely, by cultivating a constant
attention to the presence of God around her
and inside of her.
God bless you!
Father Eric

2019 Cardinal’s Appeal: The annual Cardinal’s stewardship appeal has commenced and Sacred Heart’s goal has been set at $74,500. Many parishioners have already received mail regarding the appeal and we ask that you be as generous as your means will allow. Sacred Heart has consistently met its goal every year and we thank our parishioners for their support. Win a trip to St. Croix: The Sacred Heart YAC will be selling raffles for $30 with the winner winning a trip for two to Saint Croix. The trip is five days and four nights with the price of airfare being included. The raffles are being sold this weekend both in the gymnasium and after the 9 & 11 AM Masses. The drawing will be March 1st and people can contact Tom Corson at (718) 909-7709 with questions concerning this matter. Queen of Peace Parish Mission: Our Lady Queen of Peace will be having a Parish Mission from Monday, March 4th—Wednesday, March 6th run by The Redemptorists. Father Charles Coury, who ran a Parish Mission here in 2017, will give a talk on each of the aforementioned days at 7 PM. All Catholics from other Staten Island Parishes are encouraged to attend as well. Apartments for Autistic Adults: ArchCare, the healthcare system for the archdiocese of New York, has joined with Saint Teresa Parish on Staten Island to create apartments for adults with autism. The program makes use of a vacant convent located near St. Teresa’s parish on Windsor Road. Renovations are expected to take place in July and residents can begin living there in September. When finished the building will have nine studio apartments for adults with autism aged 21 and over. The goal is to have highly functioning adults with autism be in a place with a support group of piers as their siblings move away and family support diminishes. For more information or to apply go to www.archcare.org/community-resources/autism-housing.
Rectory Closed: The Sacred Heart Rectory will be closed on Monday, February 18th, in observance of Presidents’ Day. Normal business hours will resume on Tuesday, February 19th.

Groups

Altar Servers: We are always looking for new boys and girls to become altar servers. If you are in the fifth grade or older, are a practicing Catho-lic and have received your first Holy Commun-ion you can join. If anyone is interested please contact the Rectory at (718) 442-0058 or simply ask Fr. Eric after Mass. Being a server not only increases one’s spiritual experience at Mass but also is a great way to get involved in the parish.
Sacred Heart Youth Group: Sacred Heart cur-rently has a Youth Group for children in grades 6-12. If your child is interested in joining or if you have any questions contact Maria Montouri at (347) 247-2930. The group meets every first and third Monday of the month in the school cafeteria at 7 PM. Being a member of the youth group involves volunteering at bake sales, food drives and used clothing drives. The youth group also has “Movie Night”, retreat weekends and plays laser tag. This is a fun way to earn commu-nity service credits for school. Legion of Mary: The Sacred Heart chapter of the Legion of Mary meets weekly (if possible) on Wednesday at 6:30 PM in the rectory. The meet-ing lasts roughly one hour and the members pray the Rosary and offer assistance to the Pastor. If you are interested please call Patti Foley at 917-608-7587. All are welcome. Sacred Heart Scouts: Pack and Troop 74 for grades K-10 for “ALL” children meets on Mon-days at 7 PM in the school cafeteria, open regis-tration.

Sacred Heart RCIA: Have you or anyone you know expressed an interest in becoming a Catho-lic? Were you baptized a Catholic but never re-ceived the sacraments of Communion and Confir-mation. We offer the opportunity for people to come together in small groups to learn more about The Catholic Faith. These sessions center on the teachings and experiences of the Gospels and the Church while preparing individuals to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, Communion and Confir-mation. Candidates will make their sacraments at Sacred Heart during the Easter season. Call the rectory at (718) 442-0058 if you or someone you know is interested in more details. Sacred Heart Choir: The Adult Choir sings weekly at the 11 AM Mass on Sunday. Rehearsals take place at 10:30 AM in the choir loft. If any new members who can carry a tune wish to join they do so by simply showing up. Being a member of the choir is a great way to enhance your spiritual ex-perience at Mass. Remember he who sings prays twice!
Online Giving: Do you know that Sacred Heart Parish now offers online giving which makes supporting your parish quick and easy. Online giving is perfect for older parishioners who find it difficult to get to Mass especially during the harsh winter months. It is also bene-ficial to older couples who travel often or have a second home in another state. Finally, online giving is very convenient for married couples with children whose weekends can be hectic with sporting events, dance recitals or family obligations. To find out more simply go to our parish website, www.sacredheartsi.org, and click on the online giving icon at the right hand corner of the page.
