  • WHAT IS SLAVERY?

  • Slavery indentured servants: A person who agreed to work for another person without pay for a certain length of time. An indentured servant could earn their freedom after several years of work. Slave: A person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them. Institutionalized: An organized system based on laws that become a way of life. Slavery: The institution of owning and selling slaves as property.

  • Slaves Arrive in the Colonies First Africans arrived in Virginia 1619 Started as indentured servants. Mid-1700s slavery legal in 13 colonies. Over 200,000 slaves lived in the southern region.

  • Unwillingly taken from homes in Africa. Chained together and tightly packed in ships 5-6 month trip from Africa to the colonies

  • Treatment of Slaves in the Colonies Owners were allowed to beat, whip, or insult slaves. 1669 No longer a felony to murder a slave in Virginia Treatment varied depending on their owners. Slaves were not allowed to speak out against slavery.

  • Resistance Slaves did not accept the system of slavery. They acted out, however, they: broke tools acted sick worked slowly acted ignorant Some attempted escape.
